Navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) has seldom been used to study visuospatial (VS) circuits so far. Our work studied (I) VS functions in neurosurgical oncological patients by using repetitive nTMS (rnTMS), (II) the possible subcortical circuits underneath, and (III) the correspondence between nTMS and direct cortical stimulation (DCS) during awake procedures. We designed a monocentric prospective study, adopting a protocol to use rnTMS for preoperative planning, including VS functions for lesions potentially involving the VS network, including neurosurgical awake and asleep procedures.

Mixed Transcortical Aphasia (MTA) is an infrequent aphasic syndrome, characterized by poor comprehension and production in oral language abilities and poor performance in written language abilities. However, individuals with MTA typically retain the ability to repeat. Our patient, a woman who suffered from a left hemisphere ischemic stroke involving perisylvian areas, presented with repetition preserved for words, non-words, sentences and numbers, together with marginally preserved reading abilities.

This study aimed to identify the chemical composition resulting from the chemical interaction between calcium hypochlorite [Ca(OCl)] and chlorhexidine (CHX) using different H and C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry (NMR), correlated two-dimensional spectroscopy (2D COSY), heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments. The 5.25% Ca(OCl) was mixed with 2% CHX in a 1:1 ratio, obtaining an orange-brown precipitate that was filtered, washed in ultrapure water, dried and characterized by H and C NMR, 2D COSY, HSQC and FTIR.

In two speech production studies conducted in Italian, we investigated the impact of phonological neighbourhood properties such as the neighbourhood density and the mean frequency of the neighbours on speech processing. Two populations of healthy (Study 1) and neurologically impaired (Study 2) individuals were tested. We employed multi-regression methods to analyse naming latencies in Study 1 and accuracy rates in Study 2 while controlling for various psycholinguistic predictors.

Article Synopsis
  • Developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) involve gene mutations leading to issues in the central nervous system, causing encephalopathy and seizures.
  • A case study focuses on a girl with a Rett-like condition who experienced typical development until 18 months, followed by developmental regression and a series of seizures starting at 30 months.
  • Despite treatment with valproic acid and levetiracetam, she continued to have recurrent seizures and was found to have a specific genetic mutation through advanced sequencing techniques.

The Oxford Cognitive Screen (OCS) was developed to measure cognitive impairment in stroke. Here, we test if the OCS administered acutely in stroke patients provides useful information in predicting long-term functional outcome. A group of first-time stroke patients (n = 74) underwent an acute behavioral assessment comprising the OCS and the NIHSS within one-week post-stroke.

Objectives: We describe the Residras registry, dedicated to Dravet syndrome (DS) and to other phenotypes related to SCN1A mutations, as a paradigm of registry for rare and complex epilepsies. Our primary objectives are to present the tools and framework of the integrative platform, the main characteristics emerging from the patient cohort included in the registry, with emphasis on demographic, clinical outcome, and mortality.

Methods: Standardized data of enrolled pediatric and adult patients were collected in 24 Italian expert centers and regularly updated at least on a yearly basis.

Lysine-specific demethylase 5C (KDM5C) has been identified as an important chromatin remodeling gene, contributing to X-linked neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). The KDM5C gene, located in the Xp22 chromosomal region, encodes the H3K4me3-me2 eraser involved in neuronal plasticity and dendritic growth. Here we report 30 individuals carrying 13 novel and one previously identified KDM5C variants.

Mitochondria and peroxisomes are closely related metabolic organelles, both in terms of origin and in terms of function. Mitochondria and peroxisomes can also be turned over by autophagy, in processes termed mitophagy and pexophagy, respectively. However, despite their close relationship, it is not known if both organelles are turned over under similar conditions, and if so, how this might be coordinated molecularly.

Gliomas are commonly characterized by neurocognitive deficits that strongly impact patients' and caregivers' quality of life. Surgical resection is the mainstay of therapy, and it can also cause cognitive impairment. An important clinical problem is whether patients who undergo surgery will show post-surgical cognitive impairment above and beyond that present before surgery.

"Macrographia", a relatively rare symptom generally following cerebellar diseases, consists of an abnormally large handwriting. The case reported in the present investigation shows several outstanding features. First, it is of the progressive variety, letters increase in size as one goes through the word towards the lower-right portion of space.

It has been proposed that at least two distinct processes are engaged during task-switching: reconfiguration of the currently relevant task-set and interference resolution arising from the competing task-set. Whereas in healthy individuals the two are difficult to disentangle, their disruption is thought to cause different impairments in brain-damaged patients. Yet, the observed deficits are inconsistent across studies and do not allow drawing conclusions regarding their independence.

Neurological deficits following stroke are traditionally described as syndromes related to damage of a specific area or vascular territory. Recent studies indicate that, at the population level, post-stroke neurological impairments cluster in three sets of correlated deficits across different behavioural domains. To examine the reproducibility and specificity of this structure, we prospectively studied first-time stroke patients ( = 237) using a bedside, clinically applicable, neuropsychological assessment and compared the behavioural and anatomical results with those obtained from a different prospective cohort studied with an extensive neuropsychological battery.

Patients with inherited anemia and hemoglobinopathies (such as sickle cell disease and β-thalassemia) are treated with red blood cell (RBC) transfusions to alleviate their symptoms. Some of these patients may have rare blood group types or go on to develop alloimmune reactions, which can make it difficult to source compatible blood in the donor population. Laboratory-grown RBC represent a particularly attractive alternative which could satisfy an unmet clinical need.

How do we choose words, and what affects the selection of a specific term? Naming tests such as the DO80 are frequently used to assess language function during brain mapping in awake surgery. The present study aimed to explore whether specific semantic errors become more probable under the stimulation of specific brain areas. Moreover, it meant to determine whether specific semantic characteristics of the items may evoke specific types of error.

This work presents the synthesis, characterization of copper(II) complexes (C1-C6) and the potential of these compounds to mimic the catalytic activity of the enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD). The copper(II)complexes were obtained by reaction between the aldol condensation between substituted aromatic hydrazides and aromatic aldehydes (salicylic aldehyde and pyridoxal hydrochloride), forming two new ligands (L1 to L6), resulting in new dimeric dicopper (II) complexes (C1 and C2), new three monomeric Cu derivatives (C3, C4 and C6) and a polymeric complex (C5). The Cu complexes were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, spectroscopic and electrochemical analysis.

Despite network studies of the human brain have brought consistent evidence of brain regions with diverse functional roles, the neuropsychological approach has mainly focused on the functional specialization of individual brain regions. Relatively few neuropsychological studies try to understand whether the severity of cognitive impairment across multiple cognitive abilities can be related to focal brain injuries. Here we approached this issue by applying a latent variable modeling of the severity of cognitive impairment in brain tumor patients, followed by multivariate lesion-symptom methods identifying brain regions critically involved in multiple cognitive abilities.
