Several neurodegenerative diseases are associated with the deposition of amyloid fibrils. Although these diseases are irreversible, knowing the aggregation mechanism is useful in developing drugs that can arrest or decrease the aggregation rate. In this study, we are interested in investigating the effect of Coomassie brilliant blue (CBB G-250) on the aggregation of hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) at pH 7.

Understanding the structural and functional diversity of ATP-PPases using protein domains and functional families in the CATH database.

ATP-pyrophosphatases (ATP-PPases) are the most primordial lineage of the large and diverse HUP (high-motif proteins, universal stress proteins, ATP-pyrophosphatase) superfamily. There are four different ATP-PPase substrate-specificity groups (SSGs), and members of each group show considerable sequence variation across the domains of life despite sharing the same catalytic function. Owing to the expansion in the number of ATP-PPase domain structures from advances in protein structure prediction by AlphaFold2 (AF2), we have characterized the two most populated ATP-PPase SSGs, the nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide synthases (NADSs) and guanosine monophosphate synthases (GMPSs).

Epigenome-wide association study of perceived discrimination in the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

Perceived discrimination, recognized as a chronic psychosocial stressor, has adverse consequences on health. DNA methylation (DNAm) may be a potential mechanism by which stressors get embedded into the human body at the molecular level and subsequently affect health outcomes. However, relatively little is known about the effects of perceived discrimination on DNAm.

Experiences of women relocated due to the february 2023 earthquake in Turkey: a qualitative study.

Background: Women are disproportionately affected by disasters due to their vulnerability and limited access to resources. The purpose of this study is to investigate the health concerns and experiences of women who relocated to a different city following the February 2023 earthquake in Turkey.

Methods: Data was collected using a constructivist qualitative research design.

Interplay of canonical and LIMK mediated non-canonical BMP signaling is essential for regulating differential thickness and invagination during chick forebrain roof plate morphogenesis.

Telencephalic hemisphere formation is a complex and precisely timed process, which begins in the chick forebrain with an invagination in the middle of the roof plate. However, the factor(s) that determine the position/site of invagination in the roof plate remain to be elucidated. In this study, we have demonstrated that as development proceeds, a region of lower thickness appears in the middle of the roof plate, which marks the position where the invagination begins.

Translation, adaptation and validation of an epilepsy screening instrument in two Ghanaian languages.

Introduction: The prevalence of epilepsy in sub-Saharan Africa varies considerably, and the exact estimate for Ghana remains unclear, particularly in peri-urban areas where data are scarce. More community-based studies are required to understand better the actual burden of epilepsy in these areas and the difficulties in accessing healthcare.

Objective: To adapt and validate a household survey epilepsy-screening instrument in Shai-Osudoku and Ningo-Prampram District of Greater Accra Region, Ghana.

Novel Photodynamic Inactivation Strategy for Salmonella Enteritidis PT4 on Eggshells: Exploiting the Antimicrobial Potential of Curcumin and Carvacrol.

Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a new and promising strategy for eliminating foodborne pathogenic bacteria in food preservation, reducing associated health risks for consumers. This study aimed to develop an innovative PDI-based system to inactivate Salmonella Enteritidis PT4 on eggshells. The system includes 405 nm light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and the application of curcumin or carvacrol as photosensitizers.

Effects of an intervention on immigrant parents' knowledge and attitudes toward their children's oral health: A cluster randomized trial in Norway.

There are no interventional studies on the oral health of immigrant children in Norway. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a culturally adapted oral health intervention for parental knowledge, attitude to oral hygiene, attitude to diet, and indulgence (permissiveness toward oral hygiene and sugar intake) concerning their children's oral health. A cluster randomized control trial, including immigrant parents of newborns, was conducted at seven health centers in Bergen (Norway) involving a 2-session one-to-one motivational interviews, toothbrushing demonstrations and pamphlets in the participants' native languages at baseline and after 6 months.

Synthesis and characterization of isostructural annulated actinocenes.

An isostructural series of four annulated actinocene complexes, M(hdcCOT) (M = Th, U, Np, Pu), is reported. The syntheses proceed through a trivalent starting material when M = U, Np, Pu with subsequent oxidation or, in the case of M = Th, directly from ThCl(DME). X-ray crystallography shows that each actinocene has molecular point symmetry in the solid state, with the metal atoms symmetrically bonded to two 10π-aromatic [8]annulene dianion rings.

Optimization of a micro-scale air-liquid-interface model of human proximal airway epithelium for moderate throughput drug screening for SARS-CoV-2.

Background: Many respiratory viruses attack the airway epithelium and cause a wide spectrum of diseases for which we have limited therapies. To date, a few primary human stem cell-based models of the proximal airway have been reported for drug discovery but scaling them up to a higher throughput platform remains a significant challenge. As a result, most of the drug screening assays for respiratory viruses are performed on commercial cell line-based 2D cultures that provide limited translational ability.

Scrutinizing the Gateway Relationship Between Gaming and Gambling Disorder: Scoping Review With a Focus on the Southeast Asian Region.

Background: The gaming and gambling overlap has intensified with new evidence emerging. However, the relationship between gaming and gambling in the digital space is still inconclusive, especially in resource-limited Asian countries.

Objective: This study aims to review available evidence on the possible interaction and focuses specifically on the gateway interaction between gambling and gaming.

Evaluation of iodine and selenium level and thyroid functions in patients with cystic fibrosis.

Objectives: There is limited research on thyroid function in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (pwCF). This study aimed to determine the frequency of thyroid dysfunction in children and adolescents with CF and to evaluate iodine deficiency and selenium status in pwCF.

Methods: Sixty-two CF patients and 62 control subjects were evaluated.

Studying Kurdishness in Turkey: A review of existing research.

Knowledge production on marginalized identities is frequently shaped by epistemic violence, which limits both the scope and methodologies of research. One example of this is the case of Kurdish identity in Turkey, where we find that methodological and epistemic problems are evident particularly in social psychological research. To summarize social psychological studies on Kurdishness, Kurdish identity and conflict in Turkey we've conducted a systematic review that includes a total of 63 studies on topics related to Kurdishness.

Distinct structural and functional heterochromatin partitioning of lamin B1 and lamin B2 revealed using genome-wide nicking enzyme epitope targeted DNA sequencing.

Gene expression is regulated by chromatin DNA methylation and other features, including histone post-translational modifications (PTMs), chromatin remodelers and transcription factor occupancy. A complete understanding of gene regulation will require the mapping of these chromatin features in small cell number samples. Here we describe a novel genome-wide chromatin profiling technology, named as Nicking Enzyme Epitope targeted DNA sequencing (NEED-seq).

Evaluation of Quality of Life and Psychosocial Status in Children with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Objectives: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children is a chronic condition that affects the psychosocial status and physical activities of children and their parents. This study aimed to investigate the impact of IBD on the quality of life of adolescents and their families and the variability of behavioral and emotional adjustment issues compared to a healthy control group.

Methods: This study was designed as a prospective controlled study.

Observation of the Protein-Inorganic Interface of Ferritin by Cryo-Electron Microscopy.

Visualizing the structure of the protein-inorganic interface is critically important for a more complete understanding of biomineralization. Unfortunately, there are limited approaches for the direct and detailed study of biomolecules that interact with inorganic materials. Here, we use single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study the protein-nanoparticle (NP) interactions of human light chain ferritin and visualize the high-resolution details of the protein-inorganic interface.

Longitudinal Treatment Patterns of Chorea in North American Patients with Huntington's Disease: Data from Enroll-HD.

Introduction: Chorea is the primary manifestation of Huntington's disease. Different clinicians pursue varied approaches to chorea management, and real-world evidence describing them is needed. The objective of this study was to assess the presence and severity of chorea, chorea pharmacotherapy, and treatment practice, and patterns in a large natural-history cohort with Huntington's disease.

Understanding the viability of ingested probiotics within the gastrointestinal tract is essential for evaluating their efficacy and deciphering their mechanisms of action. Detecting Bifidobacterium longum subspecies longum BB536 is particularly challenging owing to its indistinguishability from the naturally abundant B. longum species in the human gut.

Use of Telehealth for Follow-up Care After Children's Mental Health Hospitalizations.

Objectives: This study measured the extent to which the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted follow-up care for children and adolescents with acute mental health hospitalizations and the use of telehealth to offset barriers to in-person follow-up care.

Methods: The study used statewide claims data from Alabama's Children's Health Insurance Program, ALL Kids, from 2017 to 2022. Logit regressions measured associations between receipt of follow-up care within 30 days of acute mental health hospitalization and patient characteristics, timing of the COVID-19 pandemic, and receipt of care via telehealth.

N-Arylsulfonylated C-Homoaporphines as a New Class of Antiplatelet and Antimicrobial Agents.

A series of novel N-arylsulfonylated C-homoaporphine alkaloids were synthesized under microwave irradiation and evaluated for their antiplatelet and antimicrobial activities. Among the series, compounds , , , , , , , , and demonstrated highly potent (∼3-fold) platelet aggregation inhibitory activity than acetylsalicylic acid (IC = 21.34 μg/mL).

Evaluation of a novel serum marker, interleukin 27, in comparison to procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in the diagnosis of early-onset neonatal sepsis in a tertiary care center in north India.

Background: Neonatal sepsis is a significant cause of mortality in children under 5 years of age globally, with the highest incidence reported in India. The challenges in diagnosing neonatal sepsis often result in the irrational use of antibiotics. The aim of the study was to determine the diagnostic efficacy of interleukin 27 (IL-27) as a novel biomarker for the early diagnosis of neonatal sepsis.

MicroRNA Significance in Cancer: An Updated Review on Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Therapeutic Perspectives.

The article provides a thorough and up-to-date analysis of the role that microRNAs (miRNAs) within the realm of cancer therapy, paying specific attention to their diagnostic, prognostic as well as therapeutic capabilities. The miRNAs (small non-coding RNAs) are the current major genes that regulate gene expression. They are a key factor in the genesis of cancer.

NATIONAL REGISTRY SYSTEM FOR HOME MECHANICAL VENTILATION SUPPORT IN CHILDREN: FIRST DATA FROM TURKIYE.

Introduction: Advances in neonatal and pediatric intensive care have improved patient survival rates, emphasizing the need for respiratory support in cases of chronic respiratory failure, resulting in the establishment of the Turkish National Pediatric Patients Receiving Home Mechanical Ventilation (HMV) Support Registration System in 2023. This study aims to present the initial findings of the registry.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, epidemiological and demographic data was obtained from the registry and compared between invasive ventilation (IV) and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) groups.
