Citizen science resources have had great relevance in community educational intervention, fostering interest in ecological research projects. This study investigated the influence of the application of multimedia didactic resources focused on citizen science and analysis of sociodemographic variables to improve the levels of ecological knowledge about mosquito-borne diseases. For this, a probabilistic sample of 172 participants from an urban sector in southwestern Colombia was selected.

Noble element time projection chambers are a leading technology for rare event detection in physics, such as for dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay searches. Time projection chambers typically assign event position in the drift direction using the relative timing of prompt scintillation and delayed charge collection signals, allowing for reconstruction of an absolute position in the drift direction. In this paper, alternate methods for assigning event drift distance via quantification of electron diffusion in a pure high pressure xenon gas time projection chamber are explored.

Vrba, states that habitat fragmentation caused by climatic oscillations would affect particularly biome specialists (species inhabiting only one biome), which might show higher speciation and extinction rates than biome generalists.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTrophic niche breadth plays a key role in biogeographic distribution patterns. Theory posits that generalist strategies are favoured in a more heterogeneous set of environments across a spatio-temporal gradient of resources predictability, conferring individuals and species a greater capacity for colonising new habitats and thus expanding their distribution area. Using the family Falconidae (Aves, Falconiformes) as a model study, we tested the prediction that those species with a wider diet spectrum will have larger geographic range sizes and inhabit more biomes.

The present work examines the Iceman's tools which are made from chert or are related to chert working - dagger, two arrowheads, endscraper, borer, small flake and antler retoucher - and considers also the arrowhead still embedded in the shoulder of the mummy. The interdisciplinary results achieved by study of the lithic raw material, technology, use-wear analysis, CT analysis and typology all add new information to Ötzi's individual history and his last days, and allow insights into the way of life of Alpine Copper Age communities.

The decorated surface of the 1.5-t roof-collapse block was in direct contact with the exposed archaeological surface onto which it fell.

We studied a patient with a history of recurrent episodes of syncope from infancy who later developed second-degree AV block and restrictive cardiomyopathy; she subsequently suffered several episodes of ventricular tachyarrhythmia requiring implantation of bicameral defibrillator. Neurological examination revealed rapidly progressive bilateral facial weakness, winging of the scapulae, symmetric weakness and atrophy of the trunk muscles, shoulder girdle and distal muscles of both upper and lower extremities.

On occasion, diagnosis is made difficult by temporary normalization of the ECG. The condition can be unmasked by potent sodium channel blockers, such as flecainide.

Body and breathing movements cause changes in the position of the atrial dipole that can lead to failure of atrial capture and sensing, and even alternation of the stimulated chamber. We report the induction of typical intranodal tachycardia episodes related to intermittent failure of atrial capture in a patient with an implanted single lead DDD pacing system.

In this study, an assessment was made of the possibilities of single lead DDD pacing in two groups: a group of 15 patients in whom a lead with a longitudinal atrial "floating" dipole was implanted, and another group of 10 patients with a lead with a diagonal atrial "floating" dipole. In both groups, the electrodes were connected to a SLD generator. At discharge, atrial capture was achieved with the unipolar mode in 17 of 25 patients, whereas in the group carrying the longitudinal atrial dipole, atrial capture was achieved with the overlapping biphasic impulses (OLBI) system in 12 of 15 patients and in all 10 patients in the group with the diagonal atrial dipole.

Patients And Methods: Thirty-four patients (mean age 52 +/- 13 years) with recurrent drug refractory atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation of slow-pathway as the first procedure. Maximal energy used was 28 +/- 8 W, mean time was 4.
A group of 572 young cadets from the General Military Academy in Zaragoza (AGEMZA) with a mean age of 19.9 years was studied in two different situations: on admission to the AGEMZA, when physical activity was very intensive (A) and after 8 months, by which time they had all received identical diets and physical activity was considerably reduced (B). On both occasions they were asked about their smoking habits and their personal and family histories.
