Microplastics (MP) of all sizes and densities have been found deposited in streambeds. Several delivery processes were proposed to explain these observations. However, none of the previous studies explored these processes systematically, especially in cases of streambeds made of fine sediments that are regularly in motion.

Background: Air travel thrombosis continues to be a controversial topic. Exposure to hypoxia and hypobaric conditions during air travel is assumed a risk factor. The aim of this study is to explore changes in parameters of coagulation, fibrinolysis and blood flow in a rat model of exposure to hypobaric conditions that imitate commercial and combat flights.

Approach to the Perpendicular Fixation of a Scaphoid Waist Fracture-A Computer Analyzed Cadaver Model.

Neutral endopeptidase inhibitor versus angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor in a rat model of the metabolic syndrome.

The antihypertensive treatment in patients with metabolic syndrome is unclear. We therefore used a rat model of the metabolic syndrome and compared the effects of enalapril, an angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor, with candoxatril, a neutral endopeptidase inhibitor that inhibits degradation of atrial natriuretic peptide and, in addition to lowering blood pressure, exerts metabolically beneficial activity. Ten male Sprague Dawley rats were fed regular rat chow for 5 weeks.

Pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures: effect of bone-implant interface conditions on fracture stability.

Background: Closed reduction and percutaneous fixation with Kirschner wires (KWs) is the standard of care of pediatric supra-condylar humerus fractures (SCHFs). Failure modes leading to loss of reduction are not clear and have not been quantified. Multiple factors may weaken the KW-bone interface bonding conditions.

Red grape berry-cultured cells reduce blood pressure in rats with metabolic-like syndrome.

Purpose: Cumulative evidence suggests that moderate red wine consumption protects the cardiovascular system. The effect of cultured cells derived from red grape berry (RGC) on blood pressure (BP) has not been investigated. We therefore studied the antihypertensive effects of oral consumption of RGC in experimental rat model of metabolic-like syndrome and assessed its effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

Normal adiponectin levels in kidney transplant patients with hypertension.

Background: Kidney transplant patients are a unique population where despite correction of their kidney function they are still considered to be at high cardiovascular (CV) risk. Adiponectin, an adipokine secreted from adipocytes, has protective CV properties. Patients with essential hypertension (HTN) have low adiponectin levels that are associated with a high CV risk.

Effects of allicin on cardiovascular risk factors in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Background: Allium sativum, the active ingredient in garlic, is known to have a beneficial effect on major cardiovascular risk factors, including dyslipidemia, blood pressure, blood glucose and insulin levels. However, the data on the significance of these effects are inconsistent due to methodological limitations, especially the use of whole garlic cloves which does not allow controlled dosing of the active compound.

Background: Until recently acute inflammatory peri-myocardial syndromes have been associated with global rather regional left ventricular (LV) dysfunction. Recent advances in cardiac imaging with echocardiographic techniques and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) permit comprehensive evaluation of global and regional LV function. Our study was aimed to assess regional LV function in 100 patients with acute perimyocarditis, and correlate these findings with the clinical presentation.

Ambient illuminance, retinal dopamine release and refractive development in chicks.

Form deprivation and low illuminance of ambient light are known to induce myopia in chicks. Low concentrations of retinal dopamine, a light-driven neurohormone, was previously shown to be associated with form deprivation myopia. In the present study we examined the dependence of retinal dopamine release in chicks on illuminance during light-dark cycles and in continuous light, and the role of retinal dopamine release in illuminance dependent refractive development.

Optimal fixation of oblique scaphoid fractures: a cadaver model.

Purpose: Acute scaphoid fractures are commonly fixed with headless cannulated screws positioned in the center of the proximal fragment. Central placement of the screw may be difficult and may violate the scaphotrapezial joint. We hypothesize that placement of the screw through the scaphoid tuberosity will achieve perpendicular fixation of an oblique waist fracture and result in more stable fixation than a screw in the center of the proximal fragment.

Can a partial volume edge effect reduction algorithm improve the repeatability of subject-specific finite element models of femurs obtained from CT data?

The reliability of patient-specific finite element (FE) modelling is dependent on the ability to provide repeatable analyses. Differences of inter-operator generated grids can produce variability in strain and stress readings at a desired location, which are magnified at the surface of the model as a result of the partial volume edge effects (PVEEs). In this study, a new approach is introduced based on an in-house developed algorithm which adjusts the location of the model's surface nodes to a consistent predefined threshold Hounsfield unit value.
