The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a widely used diagnostic test, influenced by all physiological and pathological conditions that can bias blood rheology by interfering factors. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the CUBE 30 touch ESR analyzer in samples with preanalytical variables, as lipemia, hemolysis, and icterus or in presence of fibrinogen., Moreover we focused to define the maximum time limits to ensure a reliable ESR measure.

The aim of this study was the evaluation of the performance of three ESR automated analyzers, VES-MATIC 5, CUBE 30 TOUCH, and MINI-CUBE, involving four Italian polyclinics in Rome, Siena, Como, and Arezzo, as well as inter-site variability assessment to detect possible device-dependent and operator-dependent influences.
Methods: Accuracy analysis was carried out by analyzing the same samples with all three instruments and comparing them with the Westergren method.
(1) Background: The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is widely diffused in hematology laboratories to monitor inflammatory statuses, response to therapies (such as antibiotics), and oncologic diseases. However, ESR is not a specific diagnostic marker but needs to be contextualized and compared with clinical and other laboratory findings. This study aimed to investigate the performance of two automated instruments, namely the DIESSE CUBE 30 TOUCH (DIESSE, Siena, Italy) and the Alifax Test 1 (Alifax Srl, Polverara, Italy), in comparison with the gold standard, the Westergren method, in lymphoproliferative and myeloproliferative patients.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) indirectly measures blood fibrinogen, and it is altered by all those pathological conditions that modify the aggregation of red blood cells. The international guidelines by the International Council for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH) define the Westergren method as the gold standard for ESR, although it is completely operator-dependent, time-consuming, and requires a patient's blood consumption. Therefore, the validation of new ESR analyzers is needed.

The present work aims to add data on vaccination by evaluating the level of neutralizing antibodies in individuals who have received a three-vaccination series. For this purpose, we ran a surveillance program directed at measuring the level of IgG Abs against the Receptor Binding Domain (RBD) and surrogate virus neutralizing Ab (sVNT) anti-SARS-CoV-2 in the serum of individuals undergoing vaccination.

A central role in contrasting the spread of the infections is represented by timely diagnosis. The speed of detection depends on several factors including the type of test used.

With the widespread use of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines, a rapid and reliable method to detect SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) is extremely important for monitoring vaccine effectiveness and immunity in the population. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of the RapiRead™ reader and the TestNOW™ COVID-19 NAb rapid point-of-care (POC) test for quantitative measurement of antibodies against the spike protein receptor-binding domain of severe respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in different biological matrices compared to chemiluminescence immunoassay (CLIA) methods. Ninety-four samples were collected and analyzed using a RapiRead™ reader and TestNOW™ COVID-19 NAb kits for detecting neutralizing antibodies, and then using two CLIAs.

Quantitative immunoassays may help establish an anti-RBD Abs threshold as an indication of protective immunity. Since different immunoassays are commercial, the standard reference method for the neutralizing activity is the live Virus Neutralization Test (VNT).

More information about response to a single dose vaccine could help to better understand and optimize the management of the vaccine campaign. Workers from the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" and the University Hospital of University of Rome "Tor Vergata," were monitored during their vaccination program.

The reference test for the anti-spike neutralizing antibodies (nAbs) ability to counteract the viral infection is the virus neutralization test (VNT). Great interest is developing on reliable serological assays allowing antibodies concentration and antibody protective titer correlation.

The assessment was made on three homogeneous groups of workers and covered a large representative sample of the corresponding populations.
Objectives: To identify the main sources of stress for the three populations of workers, stimulate a discussion on the possible corrective actions, and assess the impact of the on-going organizational changes on workers' health.
Background: Laparoscopy constitutes the main surgical method for treating benign ovarian pathology in women under 40 years of age. The discussion is about the possibility of extending this surgical method to patients over 40 in whom the risk of malignant ovarian pathology is either borderline or considerably higher. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of laparoscopic treatment for these patients, who have been submitted to adequate screening, comparing the results of echographic diagnosis, laparoscopy and histology.

This tumor presents in two forms: a localized well-circumscribed lesion (lipoblastoma), or a multicentric type (lipoblastomatosis).

The case described by the authors is about a sixty year old woman whose condition was brought to attention by leukorrhea and abnormal bleeding associated with a smear test suggesting CIN 1. An endometrial aspiration biopsy revealed necrotic debris with focal granulomata and numerous acid-fast bacilli.

Stools (number and form), enteritis symptoms and signs, and intolerance manifestations were all monitored on each day of treatment. A stool culture was performed on the first available stool after enrolment and after the end of treatment to monitor the drugs' antibacterial activity.

When staged functional bladder reconstruction is adopted in the most difficult cases, or when one desires to avoid early and/or subsequent urinary diversions, sometimes a bladder enhancement could be necessary. The indications should be: a progressive damage to the upper urinary tract, after bladder closure at birth, due to a very small, no compliant detrusor plate (this is a rare condition: only one case in our series); a bladder capacity < or = 80 mls at the time of bladder neck reconstruction (this is a frequent but questionable condition: three cases in our series); a progressive damage of the upper urinary tract after bladder neck reconstruction (this is an unexpected, but not rare condition: 3 cases in our series); during every undiversion procedure (bladder augmentation is nearly mandatory during undiversion in cloacal or bladder exstrophies previously diverted: 4 cases in our series).
