The kinetics of electrocatalytic reactions are closely related to the number and intrinsic activity of the active sites. Open active sites offer easy access to the substrate and allow for efficient desorption and diffusion of reaction products without significant hindrance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with open active sites show great potential in this context.

Vitamin D deficiency is common in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence and risk factors of vitamin D deficiency in a Taiwanese IBD cohort. Vitamin D levels were checked in adult patients with IBD who were treated at Changhua Christian Hospital, a medical center in central Taiwan, from January 2017 to December 2023.

Due to the comprehensive hepatitis B virus vaccination program in Taiwan since 1986, the development of antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C infection and covered by National health insurance. Besides, the increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and currently, approved therapy for NAFLD remain developing. The etiology of liver-related diseases such as cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma required reinterpretation.

Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seroclearance, an indicator of recovery from hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, is uncommon in long-term nucleos(t)ide analog (NUC) therapy. We compared the incidence of HBsAg seroclearance in patients with and without NUC discontinuation to identify predictors of HBsAg seroclearance. This retrospective study enrolled adult patients with a chronic HBV infection followed for ≥12 months after NUC discontinuation (finite group) and those treated with NUCs for >3 years (non-finite group).

The research on perylene diimide (PDI) aggregates effectively promotes their applications in organic photovoltaic solar cells and fluorescent sensors. In this paper, a PDI fabricated with three peripheral PDI units (N, N'-bis(6-undecyl) perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide)) is investigated. The trimer shows different absorption and fluorescence properties due to hydrophobicity when dissolved in the mixed solvent of tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water.

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) relapse occurs after the cessation of nucleos(t)ide analogues (NUC) therapy due to the waning of viral suppression. Few studies have investigated the viral relapse rate and clinical relapse rate after tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) therapy. We compared the CHB relapse rate between TAF and entecavir therapy.

Background: Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) has been proven to be an effective treatment for advanced HCC. In this study, we present our single-center experience of implementing combined sorafenib and HAIC treatment for these patients and compare the treatment benefit with that of sorafenib alone.

Methods: This was a retrospective single-center study.

Background: Real-world data are scarce about the effectiveness and safety of sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir (SOF/VEL/VOX) for retreating East Asian patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection who previously received NS5A direct-acting antivirals (DAAs). We conducted a multicenter study to assess the performance of SOF/VEL/VOX in patients who were not responsive to prior NS5A inhibitors in Taiwan.

Methods: Between September 2021 and May 2022, 107 patients who failed NS5A inhibitor-containing DAAs with SOF/VEL/VOX salvage therapy for 12 weeks were included at 16 academic centers.

Background: This study aimed to describe the anatomical details of the bony nasolacrimal duct (BNLD) and adjacent nasal structures by analyzing computed tomography (CT) images, and to investigate their effects on the development of primary acquired nasolacrimal duct obstruction (PANDO).

Methods: A total of 50 patients with unilateral PANDO who underwent dacryocystorhinostomy, with a mean age of 57.96 years, were included.

Background: A previous study reported a 30% prevalence of various autoantibodies among patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The International Consensus on Anti-Nuclear Antibody (ANA) Patterns was recently introduced to classify ANA patterns based on immunoassay on HEp-2 cells. There is no previous report with this newly developed classification to evaluate patients with HCV infection.

Background: Immunotherapy has gradually become an important therapy option for lung cancer patients.

Methods: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases were responsible for all the public data.

Results: In our study, we firstly identified 22 characteristic genes of NSCLC immunotherapy response using the machine learning algorithm.

Photolysis reaction pathways of [Au(III)Cl] in aqueous solution have been investigated by time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Ultraviolet excitation directly breaks the Au-Cl bond in [Au(III)Cl] to form [Au(II)Cl] that becomes highly reactive within 79 ps. Disproportionation of [Au(II)Cl] generates [Au(I)Cl], which is stable for ≤10 μs.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and relapsing disease that can be complicated by abscesses, fistulas, or strictures of the damaged bowel. Endoscopy or imaging studies are required to diagnose and monitor the treatment response or complications of the disease. Due to the low incidence of the disease in Taiwan, the pattern of radiation exposure from medical imaging has not been well studied previously.

The rising incidence of fatty liver disease (FLD) poses a health challenge, and is expected to be the leading global cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality in the near future. Early case identification is crucial for disease intervention. A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed on 31,930 Taiwanese subjects (25,544 training and 6386 testing sets) who had received health check-ups and abdominal ultrasounds in Changhua Christian Hospital from January 2009 to January 2019.

Biochars have been highlighted as a means of carbon sequestration, which is significant for achieving carbon neutrality. Mixtures of wood chips and either bentonite or kaolin were co-pyrolysed at temperatures of 350 °C and 550 °C, and the microstructural characteristics and the carbon sequestration potential of the resultant biochar were explored in the study. The addition of minerals promoted the formation of a stable carbon structure in biochar, especially the proportion of SiC bonds in the high-temperature mineral-composited biochar increased by 3.

Background/aims: Entecavir (ETV) can suppress chronic hepatitis B (CHB) virus replication as a standard of treatment drugs. For the treatment of CHB, affordable generic drugs may be more widely used in developing and undeveloped countries. However, there is little real-world data regarding the clinical efficacy of switching from entecavir-brand-name drugs (ETV-Brand) to entecavir generic drugs (ETV-Generic) with 0.

Although the pan-genotypic direct-acting antiviral regimen was approved for treating chronic hepatitis C infection regardless of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype, real-world data on its effectiveness against mixed-genotype or genotype-undetermined HCV infection are scarce. We evaluated the real-world safety and efficacy of two pan-genotypic regimens (Glecaprevir/Pibrentasvir and Sofosbuvir/Velpatasvir) for HCV-infected patients with mixed or undetermined HCV genotypes from the five hospitals in the Changhua Christian Care System that commenced treatment between August 2018 and December 2020. This retrospective study evaluated the efficacy and safety of pan-genotypic direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment in adults with HCV infection.

Background/aims: In a recent study, attenuation imaging (ATI) with ultrasound was used as a new approach for detecting liver steatosis. However, although there are many studies on ATI and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) that prove their practicability, there are few studies comparing these two methods. As such, this study compared CAP and ATI for the detection and evaluation of liver steatosis.
