Background: Diastasis recti abdominis (DRA), commonly occurring in postpartum women, is not only an aesthetic issue but is also highly associated with functional impairments. Various conservative treatment modalities have been employed in clinical practice to alleviate DRA. However, the comparative efficacy of these non-surgical treatments for improving the inter-recti distance (IRD) remains to be determined.

Estimation of the composition of planetary rocks and minerals is crucial for understanding their formation processes. In this study, we present the application of X-ray nano-computed tomography (nano-XCT) for non-destructive 3D phase analysis and estimation of phase abundances in rare martian meteorite samples, specifically chassignite Northwest Africa (NWA) 2737. We determined the most suitable laser power for minimizing artifacts and maximizing phase contrast.

Background: A functioning arteriovenous (AV) access is essential for hemodialysis efficiency and the quality of life in hemodialysis patients. Blood osteoprotegerin (OPG) and soluble receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL) have been linked to cardiovascular diseases and vascular calcification. This study investigated the relationship between blood OPG, RANKL, and the occurrence of AV access thrombosis.

Background: Active smokers are known to be at an increased risk of both gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease (PUD), however the role of passive smoking remains unclear. In this study, we aimed to examine whether secondhand smoke (SHS) is associated with PUD and GERD.

Methods: In this population-based study, we conducted a large-scale analysis with 88,297 never-smokers (male: 18,595; female: 69,702; mean age 50.

Dual-band electrochromic (EC) materials are expected to be utilized as building materials for energy saving, but their cycle stability is still an obstacle. Here, two D-A conjugated polymers, PDPPCz36 and PDPPCz27, based on diketopyrrolopyrrole and carbazole linked with different sites, are synthesized. Both of them exhibit dual-band EC behaviors with a dark blue color in the neutral state and high absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region when oxidized.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on using deep learning to detect problems in arteriovenous (AV) access for hemodialysis patients to ensure timely interventions.
  • Audio recordings of AV access bruit sounds were analyzed through Mel spectrograms and three different deep learning models (CNN, CRNN, ViT-GRU) were developed and tested for prediction accuracy.
  • The CNN model showed the best performance overall, with strong predictive power for malfunctioning AV access, making it a promising tool for early screening in patients at risk.

Article Synopsis
  • Plasma half-life is important for estimating withdrawal periods of drugs in food animals to ensure food safety.
  • This study created a QSAR model using machine learning algorithms to predict plasma half-lives for drugs in cattle, chickens, goats, sheep, swine, and turkeys, utilizing data from FARAD.
  • The deep neural network (DNN) algorithm showed the best prediction performance, achieving strong accuracy and leading to the development of a user-friendly web dashboard for broader scientific use.

Background: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a serious clinical problem with high amputation and mortality rates, yet there is a lack of desirable therapy. While the extracellular matrix (ECM) contributes significantly to wound healing, ECM-related biomarker for DFU is still unknown. The study was designed to identify ECM-related biomarker in DFU using bioinformatics and machine learning and validate it in STZ-induced mice models.

Purpose: This study aimed to verify that aerosolization ocular surface microorganisms (AOSMs) accumulated during non-contact tonometry (NCT) measurements.

Methods: A total of 508 participants (740 eyes) were enrolled in the study. In Experiment 1, before NCT was performed on each eye, the air was disinfected, and environment air control samples were collected via Air ideal 3P (Bio Merieux).

The frequency of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) procedures has substantially increased, but its effect on vascular access recreation (VAR) remains inconclusive. We conducted a population-based retrospective analysis of Taiwan hemodialysis (HD) centers from 2004 to 2012. Data was accumulated into center-level characteristics, including patients' demographics, baseline characteristics, PTA procedures, and VAR.

Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and peptic ulcer disease (PUD) are prevalent in Taiwan. Few studies have investigated the associations between obesity indices with GERD and PUD simultaneously. This study aimed to investigate the correlations among obesity indices with GERD and PUD in a large cohort of participants, around 120,000, in the Taiwan Biobank (TWB).

The worldwide prevalence and incidence rates of end-stage renal disease have been increasing, and the trend is pronounced in Taiwan. This is especially evident in southern Taiwan, where the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) is consistently higher than in other regions. The association between kidney function and WBGT has not been fully investigated.

Background: Hyperuricemia may play a role in various systemic diseases. However, few studies have investigated the relationship between hyperuricemia and the risk of peptic ulcer disease (PUD). Therefore, in this population-based study, we enrolled over 120,000 participants from the Taiwan Biobank (TWB) and examined the risk factors for self-reported PUD.

The incidence and prevalence of dialysis in Taiwan are high compared to other regions. Consequently, mitigating chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the worsening of kidney function have emerged as critical healthcare priorities in Taiwan. Heat stress is known to be a significant risk factor for CKD and kidney function impairment.

Close associations among secondhand smoke (SHS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components have been demonstrated, however sex differences in these associations remain unclear. We collected 121,364 participants from the Taiwan Biobank, and excluded those with smoking history, the remaining 88,297 participants (male: 18,595; female: 69,702; mean age 50.1 ± 11.

Objective: To analyze cerebellar atrophy in genetic epileptic encephalopathies (EEs).

Methods: This research included a retrospective cohort study conducted from January 2016 to December 2023 and a systematic review on cerebellar atrophy in genetic EEs. Pediatric individuals who were diagnosed with EEs based on electroclinical features, carried causative gene variants, and exhibited cerebellar atrophy were recruited.

Article Synopsis
  • * An ergonomic experiment was conducted using various colors and types of paper to assess comfort and clarity during reading under controlled lighting conditions.
  • * Results indicated that low chroma (≈10) colors provided comfort, while higher chroma (30-40) colors enhanced clarity, ultimately supporting the use of spectrum mapping technology to improve the reading experience.

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common global health issue. Previous studies have revealed a higher prevalence of GERD in females than in males, however few studies have investigated sex differences in the risk factors associated with GERD. Therefore, the aim of this population-based study was to examine sex differences in the risk factors for GERD in a large cohort of over 120,000 Taiwanese participants.

The involvement of enolase‑1 (ENO1), intracellularly or extracellularly, has been implicated in cancer development. Moreover, anticancer activities of an ENO1‑targeting antibody has demonstrated the pathological roles of extracellular ENO1 (surface or secreted forms). However, although ENO1 was first identified as a glycolytic enzyme in the cytosol, to the best of our knowledge, extracellular ENO1 has not been implicated in glycolysis thus far.

Osteoporosis is a common disease, and the prevalence is increasing in patients with chronic respiratory diseases, with important implications with regard to fractures, hospitalization, and death. Due to inconsistent data and a lack of large cohort follow-up studies on the association between lung function and osteoporosis, the aim of this study was to investigate this issue. We enrolled and followed for a median of 4 years a total of 9059 participants with no history of smoking, bronchitis, emphysema, or asthma from the Taiwan Biobank.
