Up to 50% of individuals with uveal melanoma (UM), a frequent cancer of the eye, pass away from metastases. One of the major challenges in treating UM is the role of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs), which mediate the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of tumors. RTKs are involved in binding multiple growth factors, leading to angiogenesis and vasculogenic mimicry (VM) phenomena.

The key pathogenic mechanisms of PVR development include the proliferation, migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPEs) activated by the growth factors and cytokines after surgery. Although some drugs have been tried in PVR treatments as basic investigations, the limited efficacy remains an obstacle, which may be due to the single pharmacological action and lack of targeting.

Aims: This study aimed to clarify the changes in treatment regimens and medical expenditures in diabetic patients with osteoporosis.
Methods: We recruited 2,853,036 diabetic patients from the Beijing medical insurance database between 2016 and 2018. Among them, 406,221 patients also had osteoporosis.
Charge trap materials that can store carriers efficiently and controllably are desired for memory applications. 2D materials are promising for highly compacted and reliable memory mainly due to their ease of constructing atomically uniform interfaces, however, remain unexplored as being charge trap media. Here it is discovered that 2D semiconducting PbI is an excellent charge trap material for nonvolatile memory and artificial synapses.

Aim/hypothesis: Emerging evidence suggests that glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) may exert positive effects in patients with depression. Our aim was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the antidepressant effects of GLP-1RAs.
Methods: Randomized controlled trials and prospective cohort studies investigating the effects of GLP-1RAs versus placebo or other antidiabetic therapies on depressive symptoms were searched for using multiple electronic sources (CENTRAL, PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO, World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, ClinicalTrials.
2D metal halides have attracted increasing research attention in recent years; however, it is still challenging to synthesize them via liquid-phase methods. Here it is demonstrated that a droplet method is simple and efficient for the synthesis of multiclass 2D metal halides, including trivalent (BiI , SbI ), divalent (SnI , GeI ), and monovalent (CuI) ones. In particular, 2D SbI is first experimentally achieved, of which the thinnest thickness is ≈6 nm.

Background: Osteoporosis (OP), a systemic skeletal disease common in aged population, is an important public health problem worldwide. Animal models are important tools for understanding OP. In ovariectomy (OVX) or orchiectomy (ORX) OP models, lumbar vertebrae are often used for evaluating of the OP progression.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPosterior capsule opacification (PCO), the most common complication after cataract surgery, is caused by the proliferation, migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) of residual lens epithelial cells in the capsule bag. Although the surface modification and drug loading of intraocular lens (IOLs) have been effective in preventing PCO to some extent, the intraocular safety of anti-proliferative drug application is still a major limitation in clinical application. In this study, we used non-viral gene delivery systems in combination with layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly technology, and the modified IOL could effectively prevent the development of PCO by interfering with the EMT process mediated by the platelet-derived growth factor receptor-α (PDGFR-α).

Four treatments, including no fertilizer (CK), single nitrogen fertilizer (NF), single chemical fertilizer (CF), and the combined application of organic manure and chemical fertilizer (CFM), were selected for the collection of 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm soil at potato maturity 16 years after the experiment (2019). High-throughput sequencing technology was used to assess the soil bacterial and fungal communities to explore the effects of different fertilization measures on soil quality from the perspective of microorganisms, and the partial least squares path model (PLS-PM) was used to reveal the key environmental driving factors of soil microbial community alternation and crop yield improvement in dryland during fertilization mode transformation.

A novel polymer ammonium salt of polyethyleneimine phosphate phosphonic acid (APEMPPA) flame retardant for cotton fabrics was synthesized and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), in which some ammonium phosphoric acid groups were replaced by phosphate ester groups to decrease the phenomena that the ammonium ions in flame retardant would exchange with metal ions such as Ca and Mg in washing water to keep flame retardance well after washing. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results, and durability of treated cotton fabrics suggested that APEMPPA was grafted onto the cellulose. Limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 40 wt% APEMPPA-treated cotton fabric was 44.

However, it is still challenging for them to be compatible with high-resolution patterning technology toward miniaturization and integration applications, as they can be readily damaged by the organic solvents used in standard lithography processes. Here, a flexible three-step method is developed to make high-resolution multicolor patterning on hybrid perovskite, particularly achieved on a single nanosheet.

Cytokine storm induced by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a major pathological feature of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) and a crucial determinant in COVID-19 prognosis. Understanding the mechanism underlying the SARS-CoV-2-induced cytokine storm is critical for COVID-19 control. Here, we identify that SARS-CoV-2 ORF3a and host hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) play key roles in the virus infection and pro-inflammatory responses.

EnhII stimulates Cp activity to regulate the transcriptions of precore, core, polymerase, and pregenomic RNAs, and therefore, EnhII/Cp is essential for the regulation of HBV replication. This study revealed a distinct mechanism underlying the suppression of EnhII/Cp activation and HBV replication.
