Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed mortality rates in patients infected with new COVID-19 variants (Omicron BA.5.2.48 and B.7.14) to identify risk factors and improve predictive models.
  • Data was collected from 1029 patients in China, with 987 included in the final analysis, revealing a 15.5% mortality rate and key predictors such as age, respiratory rate, and specific lab values.
  • Three models were validated for predicting mortality, with XGBoost showing the best performance in terms of accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity compared to logistic regression and decision tree models.

The vocal fold is an architecturally complex organ comprising a heterogeneous mixture of various layers of individual epithelial and mesenchymal cell lineages. Here we performed single-cell RNA sequencing profiling of 5836 cells from the vocal folds of adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Combined with immunostaining, we generated a spatial and transcriptional map of the vocal fold cells and characterized the subpopulations of epithelial cells, mesenchymal cells, endothelial cells, and immune cells.

Objective: Existing studies have conflicting results about the predictors of forgotten joints in patients with total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and the relationship between psychosocial factors and forgotten knees is unknown. The purpose of this study was to confirm predictors for the forgotten joint in TKA patients.

Methods: This was an observational, prospective longitudinal study.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence and common sites of severe foot pain among nurses, to define the risk factors of severe foot pain in nurses in tertiary hospital in China, and to construct a nomograph model for predicting individuals' risks for severe foot pain.

Methods: Between August 2019 and December 2019, a stratified global sampling method was used to select 10691 nurses from 351 tertiary hospitals in China to investigate the incidence of severe foot pain among them. The variables that may affect the occurrence of severe foot pain were analyzed by single factor analysis to identify the influencing factors of severe foot pain in nurses.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Shibing Xingnao Granules in treating patients with vascular dementia (VD) alongside acupuncture therapy.
  • The study involved 78 VD patients divided into a control group (acupuncture only) and an observation group (acupuncture + Shibing Xingnao Granules), measuring clinical outcomes, cognitive function, and serum levels of apoptosis-related molecules.
  • Results indicated that the observation group had significantly better treatment outcomes, with higher improvement rates in mental and daily functioning and more favorable changes in serum markers associated with neuronal health.

Background: Patient compliance is an essential precondition for assessing the effectiveness of graduated compression stockings (GCS). However, patient compliance with use of GCS has not received sufficient attention. Only a few clinical studies have explicitly evaluated patients' adherence to GCS therapy, and the instruments used to measure patient compliance have either not been well adapted to daily use or lacked scientific development techniques.

Objective: Patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) were primarily geriatric, with high risk of postoperative electrolyte disorders and malnutrition. Randomized controlled trials regarding oral nutrition supplement (ONS) strategies in TKA was sparse. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of preoperative oral electrolyte-carbohydrate nutrition supplement (OECNS) on patients (aged >65 years) undergoing TKA.

Objective: To observe the regulative effect of acupuncture on the depression-like behavior and cAMP-response element binding protein (CREB)/brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/tyrosine protein kinase B (TrkB) signaling pathway of hippocampus in rats with post-stroke depression (PSD), and to explore its possible mechanism on improving PSD.

Methods: A total of 36 SPF SD rats were randomized into a sham operation group, a model group and a Tongdu Tiaoshen group, 12 rats in each group. The compound method of Zea Longa suture-occlusion and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) was used to establish the PSD model in rats of the model group and the Tongdu Tiaoshen group.

In order to compare the effects of iopromide and isoxazole on postoperative contrast-induced nephropathy in patients with renal insufficiency, the paper searches for randomized controlled trials and retrospective cohort studies comparing the effects of iopromide and iodixanol on renal function in patients with renal insufficiency after surgery. The data are extracted from eligible studies. We tried to assess the incidence of contrast-agent nephropathy, preoperative and postoperative serum creatinine indicators, and mortality.

Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) plays an important role in scavenging HO and balancing ROS content in plant cells, which is of great significance for the growth and development of life and resistance to external stress. However, up to now, APXs in () have not been systematically characterized. In this study, a total of 26 genes were identified, which were distributed on 13 chromosomes and divided into five phylogenetic branches.

A high-performance zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte was successfully fabricated, in which the polymer chains were cross-linked by multiple reversible non-covalent bonds. The mechanical and electrochemical properties of the synthesized zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte can be facilely modulated by immersing the as-prepared zwitterionic hydrogel in saline solutions with different concentrations. The processed zwitterionic hydrogel electrolyte exhibits tunable mechanical and electrochemical properties (favorable elasticity of 3.

The zinc uptake regulator (Zur) is a member of the Fur (ferric uptake regulator) family transcriptional regulators that plays important roles in zinc homeostasis and virulence of bacteria. Upon zinc perception, Zur binds to the promoters of zinc responsive genes and controls their transcription. However, the mechanism underlying zinc-mediated Zur activation remains unclear.

Objective: To observe the improvement of acupuncture on depression-like behavior in rats with post-stroke depression (PSD), and to explore its possible mechanism.

Methods: A total of 48 SD rats were randomized into a sham-operation group, a model group, a Tongdu Tiaoshen group and a non-meridian-non-acupoint group, 12 rats in each group. In the the model group, the Tongdu Tiaoshen group and the non-meridian-non-acupoint group, PSD model was established by the compound method of cerebral medial arterial occlusion, chronic unpredictable mild stress and isolation.

The pressure-induced phase transitions of bromine chloride (BrCl) were studied using the CALYPSO structure prediction method and first-principles calculations. Geometry optimization showed that the BrCl underwent the following phase transitions under high pressure: Cmcm → C2/m → Fddd → P4/mmm. These phase transitions occurred at 75, 94, and 140 GPa, respectively.

At present, the 2019-nCoV epidemic situation is in severe and complex period. In order to prevent the virus from invading and infecting, it is very important and urgent for medical personnel to protect themselves. However, in the process of using protective equipment by medical personnel, the performance of device related pressure injuries (DRPI) caused by pain, numbness, redness, and even breakage caused by the equipment has seriously endangered the health of medical personnel.

The rapid synthesis of marine ladder polyethers from polyepoxide precursors (in analogy with the biosynthetic pathway hypothesized by Nakanishi) is hampered by the fact that the exo-selective epoxide-opening cyclization cascade that gives THF-type polyethers is preferred over the endo-selective cascade that gives the desired products. We found that perfluoro-tert-butanol (PFTB) cooperating with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([EMIM]BF ) can promote endo-selective epoxide-opening cyclization reactions of trisubstituted epoxy alcohols. Starting from readily accessible homochiral polyepoxy alcohols with a methyl group at all the endo-cyclization sites, we were able to construct polyethers up to five consecutive fused 6-, 7-, and/or 8-membered rings in one step.
