Article Synopsis
  • - Metabolic acidosis is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, and sodium bicarbonate is often prescribed to treat it and possibly slow CKD progression, but its impacts on major cardiovascular events and mortality are unclear.
  • - A study of 25,599 CKD stage V patients from Taiwan found that 19.9% used sodium bicarbonate, showing no significant difference in dialysis initiation but lower risks of major adverse cardiovascular events and hospitalizations, along with significantly reduced mortality rates for users.
  • - The findings suggest that while the use of sodium bicarbonate does not affect the rate of dialysis initiation, it is linked to lower risks of major adverse cardiovascular complications and better survival outcomes in advanced CKD patients. *

Either sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors or pioglitazone (Pio) has doubtful issues of bladder cancer, especially for the combination therapy with these two drugs. Our study aimed to investigate the risk of bladder cancer under combination therapy of SGLT-2 inhibitors and Pio. We included 97,024 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Chang Gung Research Database in Taiwan from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • TAFRO syndrome is a rare type of idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease (MCD) marked by symptoms like low platelet count, swelling, fever, and bone marrow changes, often affecting the kidneys.
  • Common kidney issues in TAFRO syndrome include MPGN-like damage and thrombotic microangiopathy, which are revealed through renal biopsy.
  • This review article aims to explore the latest research on the underlying molecular mechanisms, particularly the roles of cytokines like IL-6 and VEGF, in causing kidney damage in patients with TAFRO syndrome.

Preoperative renal dysfunction is associated with mortality in patients who undergo coronary artery bypass graft and valve surgery. However, the role of preoperative renal dysfunction in type A aortic dissection (TAAD) remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of preoperative renal dysfunction on the outcome of surgical intervention in patients with TAAD.

Peritonitis is a serious complication after invasive procedures in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD). Most studies that have investigated peritonitis following invasive gynecologic procedures enrolled small patient populations. This study focuses on the clinical presentation, outcomes, and effects of prophylactic antibiotic use before invasive techniques.
