Aim: To investigate the correlation between DKK1 polymorphisms with bone phenotypes and response to alendronate treatment.

Materials & Methods: Five tag single nucleotide polymorphisms of DKK1 were analyzed in 639 Chinese postmenopausal women with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Bone mineral density (BMD), β-CTX and ALP were measured before and after alendronate treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how variations in the LRP5 gene affect the effectiveness of alendronate treatment in women with osteoporosis in China.
  • The research involved 639 postmenopausal women who were treated with alendronate, and the A1330V polymorphism in LRP5 was examined alongside changes in bone mineral density and bone turnover markers before and after treatment.
  • Results showed that women with CC and CT genotypes experienced more significant improvements in lumbar spine bone density and decreases in specific bone turnover markers than those with the TT genotype, indicating that the TT genotype may signal a weaker response to the medication.
