Bone implant-associated infections and inflammations, primarily caused by bacteria colonization, frequently result in unsuccessful procedures and pose significant health risks to patients. To mitigate these challenges, the development of engineered implants with spatiotemporal regulation capabilities, designed to inhibit bacterial survival and modulate immune responses in the early stage, while promoting bone defect healing in the late stage is proposed. The implants are functionalized with ε-poly-l-lysine-phenylboronic acid (PP) via dynamic boronic ester bonds, which facilitate its release through a reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pH-responsive strategy, thereby establishing an antibacterial microenvironment on and around the implants.

Sweet orange () is an economically important fruit crop worldwide. Mining for genes associated with ripening periods and fruit color traits is crucial for plant genetics and for the improvement of external fruit quality traits. The present study identified a novel navel orange accession, designated as Ganhong, with early ripening and deep red fruit traits.

Introduction: Tibetan sheep, economically important animals on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, have diversified into numerous local breeds with unique characteristics through prolonged environmental adaptation and selective breeding. However, most current research focuses on one or two breeds, and lacks a comprehensive representation of the genetic diversity across multiple Tibetan sheep breeds. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the genetic structure, diversity and high-altitude adaptation of 6 Tibetan sheep breeds using whole-genome resequencing data.

Article Synopsis
  • * The study analyzed whole-grain consumption trends in China, noting significant drops from 2000 to 2009, followed by increases until 2018, yet 80% of adults still fell short of dietary guidelines.
  • * Changes in dietary habits in China reflect a shift towards high-fat foods and meat, leading to low dietary fiber intake and insufficient whole-grain consumption, signaling a public health concern that needs addressing.

In order to optimize the overall form of electromagnetic scattering in two-dimensional dielectric media, this work offers a frequency-domain boundary element method based on isogeometric analysis. The Isogeometric boundary element method (IGABEM) is used to guarantee geometric correctness during optimization and prevent over-refinement of the mesh. Non-uniform rational B-splines are used to discretize the boundary integrals of the model, enabling rapid numerical computation while ensuring high accuracy.

The effectiveness of radiotherapy in colorectal cancer (CRC) relies on its ability to induce cell death via the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, genes responsible for mitigating oxidative stress can impede radiotherapy's efficacy. In this study, we elucidate a significant association between the nucleolar protein Fibrillarin (FBL) and the oxidative stress response in CRC tumors.

Electrocaloric (EC) cooling presents a promising approach to efficient and compact solid-state heat pumps. However, reported EC coolers have complex architectures and limited cooling temperature lift. In this work, we introduce a self-regenerative heat pump (SRHP) using a cascade of EC polymer film stacks, which have electrostrictive actuations in response to an electric field that are directed to realize efficient heat transfer, eliminating the need for additional transportive or regenerative mechanisms.

Viral infection causes endoplasmic reticulum stress and protein metabolism disorder, influencing protein aggregates formation or degradation that originate from misfolded proteins. The mechanism by which host proteins are involved in the above process remains largely unknown. The present study found that porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) infection promoted the degradation of intracellular ubiquitinated protein aggregates via activating autophagy.

  • Generative drug design helps create new compounds that target disease-causing proteins, allowing exploration of a wider range of chemical options and leading to innovative treatments.
  • However, many designs tend to overlook key drug properties, limiting their effectiveness in drug discovery.
  • The TamGen method addresses this by using a chemical language model to generate and refine compounds, resulting in higher quality molecules, including 14 promising candidates that inhibit the Tuberculosis ClpP protease effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • Existing haptic actuators struggle to mimic real-world touch sensations because they are often stiff and limited in functionality.
  • The new wearable haptic artificial muscle skin (HAMS) uses soft, millimeter-scale dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) that allow for significant movement while remaining comfortable to wear.
  • HAMS provides complex and precise tactile feedback and can be integrated into extended reality (XR) systems, opening up possibilities for use in areas like entertainment, education, and assistive technologies.

Improving drug delivery efficacy is the key point for enhancing the therapeutic index of medicines. Herein, we report fatty chain conjugated paclitaxel (PTX) prodrugs with a disulfide bond as linker. The formed prodrugs can self-assemble into stable nanoparticles in aqueous solutions, and rapidly transform into long-circulating nanocomplexes via the non-covalent binding to serum albumin in blood, enabling efficient drug delivery and robust antitumor effect.

  • The study investigates prenatal consultation and integrated management of fetal pulmonary valve anomalies (PVA) in China, emphasizing the need for timely intervention after birth.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 30 fetal PVA cases at Peking University People's Hospital between January 2019 and March 2023, finding varied conditions like pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and pulmonary stenosis.
  • Outcomes showed that most patients received effective postnatal treatments, with the majority recovering well; however, some families chose pregnancy termination based on the severity of the condition.

Stretchable electrodes are an essential component in soft actuator systems. In particular, Joule heating electrodes (JHEs) are required for thermal actuation systems. A highly stretchable, patternable, and low-voltage operating JHE based on hybrid layers of silver nanowires (AgNWs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is reported.

Purpose: Brentuximab vedotin (BV) incorporation into frontline chemotherapy regimens improved outcomes for classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL). The shared mechanism of action of BV and vinca alkaloids as microtubulin inhibitors increased the potential risk of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). Rates of CIPN and use of protocol-stipulated dose modifications of a microtubulin inhibitor were examined on the Children's Oncology Group AHOD1331 study, which compared BV, doxorubicin, vincristine (VCR), etoposide, prednisone, cyclophosphamide (BV-AVE-PC; BV arm) with bleomycin containing doxorubicin, bleomycin, vincristine, etoposide, prednisone, cyclophosphamide (ABVE-PC; standard arm) in patients with high-risk cHL ages 2-21 years.

Herein, we constructed a paclitaxel (PTX) prodrug (PA) by conjugating PTX with acrylic acid as a cysteine-depleting agent. The as-synthesized PA can assemble with diacylphosphatidylethanolamine-PEG to form stable nanoparticles (PA NPs). After endocytosis into cells, PA NPs can specifically react with cysteine and trigger release of PTX for chemotherapy.

Herein, we developed a paclitaxel prodrug (PSFc) through the conjugation of paclitaxel (PTX) and ferrocene a redox-responsive disulfide bond. PSFc displays acid-enhanced catalytic activity of Fenton reaction and is capable of forming stable nanoparticles (PSFc NPs) through the assembly with distearoyl phosphoethanolamine-PEG. After being endocytosed, PSFc NPs could release PTX to promote cell apoptosis in response to overexpressed redox-active species of tumor cells.
