Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease characterized by articular cartilage destruction, subchondral bone remodeling, ectopic osteophyte formation and synovitis. It is now recognized that the integrity of the underlying subchondral bone is crucial for the maintenance of the overlying articular cartilage.
