Introduction: Proper implementation of Point-of-Care testing (POCT) for C-reactive protein (CRP) in primary care can decrease the inappropriate use of antibiotics, thereby tackling the problem of growing antimicrobial resistance.
Objective: The analytical performance and user-friendliness of four POCT-CRP assays were evaluated: QuikRead go easy, LumiraDx, cobas b 101 and Afinion 2.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Increased titers of autoantibodies targeting the G-protein-coupled receptors angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) and endotelin-1 type A receptor (ETAR) are associated with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. The aim of this study was to determine whether 1) these antibodies are specifically related to COVID-19 disease pathogenesis or increased during any severe respiratory illness, 2) if they are formed during illness, and 3) if they correlate with inflammatory markers or long-term symptoms.
Methods: Antibodies against AT1R, ETAR, and antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) were measured in n=40 prospectively enrolled COVID-19 patients and n=207 COVID-19 patients included in a biobank.
Pathogen-specific CD8 T cell responses restricted by the nonpolymorphic nonclassical class Ib molecule human leukocyte antigen E (HLA-E) are rarely reported in viral infections. The natural HLA-E ligand is a signal peptide derived from classical class Ia HLA molecules that interact with the NKG2/CD94 receptors to regulate natural killer cell functions, but pathogen-derived peptides can also be presented by HLA-E. Here, we describe five peptides from severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) that elicited HLA-E-restricted CD8 T cell responses in convalescent patients with coronavirus disease 2019.

This retrospective observational study evaluates the safety and effectiveness of the new 0-1h hs-cTn I protocol in comparison with the standard 0-3h cTn I protocol for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
Methods: A total of two times 100 consecutive chest pain patients presenting at the ED in November/December 2018 (standard 0-3h cTn I group) and in November/December 2020 (short 0-1h hs-cTn I group) were enrolled.
Recombinant Newcastle disease virus (rNDV) strains engineered to express foreign genes from an additional transcription unit (ATU) are considered as candidate live-attenuated vector vaccines for human and veterinary use. Early during the COVID-19 pandemic we and others generated COVID-19 vaccine candidates based on rNDV expressing a partial or complete SARS-CoV-2 spike (S) protein. In our studies, a number of the rNDV constructs did not show high S expression levels in cell culture or seroconversion in immunized hamsters.

Background: Patients with cancer, especially hematological cancer, are at increased risk for breakthrough COVID-19 infection. So far, a predictive biomarker that can assess compromised vaccine-induced anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunity in cancer patients has not been proposed.
Methods: We employed machine learning approaches to identify a biomarker signature based on blood cytokines, chemokines, and immune- and non-immune-related growth factors linked to vaccine immunogenicity in 199 cancer patients receiving the BNT162b2 vaccine.
Purpose: Patients with cancer display reduced humoral responses after double-dose COVID-19 vaccination, whereas their cellular response is more comparable with that in healthy individuals. Recent studies demonstrated that a third vaccination dose boosts these immune responses, both in healthy people and patients with cancer. Because of the availability of many different COVID-19 vaccines, many people have been boosted with a different vaccine from the one used for double-dose vaccination.
