Integrated mode multiplexers are key components in photonic networks and are crucial to achieving higher data density. Asymmetric directional couplers represent one of the most common multiplexing architectures, owing to their low losses and scalability, but further bandwidth enhancements are sought after. In this Letter, we demonstrate a multiplexer/demultiplexer link based on asymmetric directional couplers assisted by subwavelength grating metamaterials.

Cryptosporidiosis is a waterborne protozoal infection that may cause life-threatening diarrhea in undernourished children living in unsanitary environments. The aim of this study is to identify new biomarkers that may be related to gut-brain axis dysfunction in children suffering from the malnutrition/infection vicious cycle, necessary for better intervention strategies. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a well-known neutrophil-related tissue factor released during enteropathy that could drive gut-derived brain inflammation.

Costs, effectiveness, and safety associated with Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy: Results from a comprehensive cancer center.

Real world effectiveness, toxicity and costs analyses from chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy are of utmost relevance to determine whether and how to offer patients highly personalized immunotherapy. In this study, we aimed at describing CAR T-cells effectiveness, safety and costs in a Portuguese Comprehensive Cancer Center. We performed a retrospective descriptive study of adult patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma and transformed follicular lymphoma referred to CAR T-cell therapy, between May 2019 and February 2021.

Weaned antibiotic pre-treated C57BL/6 mice were orally infected with EPEC strain UMD901 (E2348/69 bfpA C129S); mice were monitored daily for body weight; stool specimens were collected daily; and intestinal tissues were collected at the termination of the experiment on day 3 post-infection.

C57BL/6 (21 days of age) mice were fed a Northeastern Brazil regional basic diet (RBD) or a control diet for 21 d.

A near real-time economic activity tracker for the Brazilian economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers needed to assess the impact of large monetary and fiscal policy interventions in as close to real time as possible-yet existing survey-based indicators are usually released monthly or quarterly. The use of high-frequency data to track economic activity has become widespread. This paper constructs a near real-time economic activity indicator for the Brazilian economy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Assessment of phosphorus loading dynamics in a tropical reservoir with high seasonal water level changes.

Nutrient accumulation in man-made reservoirs has been documented worldwide. Therefore, quantifying phosphorus loading and understanding its temporal dynamics in reservoirs is mandatory for sustainable water management. In this study, the Vollenweider's complete-mix phosphorus budget model was adapted to account for high water level variations, which are a common feature in tropical reservoirs, and for internal phosphorus loads.

S100B Inhibition Attenuates Intestinal Damage and Diarrhea Severity During Infection by Modulating Inflammatory Response.

The involvement of the enteric nervous system, which is a source of S100B, in () infection (CDI) is poorly understood although intestinal motility dysfunctions are known to occur following infection. Here, we investigated the role of S100B in CDI and examined the S100B signaling pathways activated in toxin A (TcdA)- and B (TcdB)-induced enteric glial cell (EGC) inflammatory response. The expression of S100B was measured in colon tissues and fecal samples of patients with and without CDI, as well as in colon tissues from -infected mice.

Evaporation in Brazilian dryland reservoirs: Spatial variability and impact of riparian vegetation.

Evaporation is a major factor controlling the hydrological dynamics of surface water reservoirs in dry environments, therefore quantification with minimal uncertainties is desired. The aim of this paper is to assess the spatial variability and impact of riparian vegetation on reservoir evaporation by remote sensing. Eight reservoirs located in subhumid and semi-arid climates in the Brazilian Drylands were studied.

Vitamin C combined with hydrocortisone is increasingly being used to treat septic patients, even though this treatment regimen is based on questionable evidence. When used, a marked effect on key players of innate immunity would be expected, as sepsis is featured by a dysregulated immune response.Here, we explored the effect of vitamin C and hydrocortisone alone and combined, in an ex vivo human whole-blood model of Escherichia coli- or Staphylococcus aureus-induced inflammation.

Mapping regional surface water volume variation in reservoirs in northeastern Brazil during 2009-2017 using high-resolution satellite images.

The multiple-year drought that started in 2011 and reached climax in 2015 was the most severe and prolonged one in the semiarid northeastern (NE) Brazil in recent decades. This study aimed to investigate the reservoir surface water volume (SWV) variation in NE Brazil from 2009 to 2017 in four representative regions covering a total area of approximately 10,000 km there and encompassing 2,140 reservoirs (areas range from 0.003 to 21 km).

Retinoids delay cell cycle progression and promote differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells exposed to nutrient deprivation.

Objective: Vitamin A is commonly recommended as a treatment for diarrhea and undernutrition; however, little is known about the underlying cellular mechanisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the modulation of cell cycle by vitamin A derivatives (retinyl palmitate or retinol) in undernourished intestinal epithelial crypts (IEC-6).

Methods: IEC-6 cells were exposed to nutrient deprivation (no serum and no glutamine) and supplemented with retinyl palmitate or retinol at a range of 2 to 20 μM.

Enteropathogenic Infection Induces Diarrhea, Intestinal Damage, Metabolic Alterations, and Increased Intestinal Permeability in a Murine Model.

Enteropathogenic  (EPEC) are recognized as one of the leading bacterial causes of infantile diarrhea worldwide. Weaned C57BL/6 mice pretreated with antibiotics were challenged orally with wild-type EPEC or mutant (lacking type 3 secretion system) to determine colonization, inflammatory responses and clinical outcomes during infection. Antibiotic disruption of intestinal microbiota enabled efficient colonization by wild-type EPEC resulting in growth impairment and diarrhea.

A bivalent vaccine confers immunogenicity and protection against and enterotoxigenic infections in mice.

Vaccine studies for and enterotoxigenic have been impaired by the lack of optimal animal models. We used two murine models to show that a 2a bivalent vaccine (CVD 1208S-122) expressing enterotoxigenic colonization factor antigen-I (CFA/I) and the binding subunits A2 and B of heat labile-enterotoxin (LTb) is immunogenic and protects against weight loss and diarrhea. These findings document the immunogenicity and pre-clinical efficacy effects of CVD 1208S-122 vaccine and suggest that further work can help elucidate relevant immune responses and ultimately its clinical efficacy in humans.

Modelling the impact of sediment management on the trophic state of a tropical reservoir with high water storage variations.

Eutrophication of lakes has affected society in many regions, particularly in water scarce environments where: i) low runoff reduces the self-purification potential of water bodies; ii) water supply relies on surface reservoirs, which are susceptible to nutrient enrichment. This work presents an assessment of the impact of the silted sediment management on the trophic status of a tropical surface reservoir with intense temporal variability of water storage. A complete mixing model describing the total phosphorus budget in the water and sediments was used, based on semi-empirical formulations.

Cerebral Venous Thrombosis in Hematological Malignancy: Balancing the Risks.

Background And Aim: The coexistence of cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) and hematological neoplasms is rare. Currently available therapeutic options raise problems concerning the balance of thrombotic and hemorrhagic risks. Our purpose is to characterize a series of cases of CVT and concomitant hematological malignancy, focusing on predisposing factors and treatment strategies.

Rotavirus A Infections in Community Childhood Diarrhea in the Brazilian Semiarid Region During Postvaccination Era.

Background: Rotavirus A (RVA) is one of the leading causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide; however, few studies assessed RVA genetics with community surveillance.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate clinical data, genetic diversity, and coinfection patterns of RVA infections in children from 2 to 36 months old with or without community childhood diarrhea in the Brazilian semiarid region during postvaccination era.

Methods: We enrolled and collected socioeconomic/clinical information using a standardized questionnaire and fecal samples from 291 children.

From waste to resource: Cost-benefit analysis of reservoir sediment reuse for soil fertilization in a semiarid catchment.

Reservoir networks have been established worldwide to ensure water supply, but water availability is endangered quantitatively and qualitatively by sedimentation. Reuse of sediment silted in reservoirs as fertilizer has been proposed, thus transforming nutrient-enriched sediments from waste into resource. The aim of this study is to assess the potential of reusing sediment as a nutrient source for agriculture a semiarid basin in Brazil, where 1029 reservoirs were identified.

Background: Diarrheal diseases are an important cause of morbidity and mortality among children in developing countries. We aimed to study the etiology and severity of diarrhea in children living in the low-income semiarid region of Brazil.

Methodology: This is a cross-sectional, age-matched case-control study of diarrhea in children aged 2-36 months from six cities in Brazil's semiarid region.

Virulence-related genes are associated with clinical and nutritional outcomes of Shigella/Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli pathotype infection in children from Brazilian semiarid region: A community case-control study.

Shigella/Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) pathotype is a major enteropathogen associated with diarrhea and malnutrition in children from developing countries. This study aimed to correlate Shigella/EIEC virulence-related genes (VRGs) with clinical symptoms, nutritional status and coenteropathogens in children from the Brazilian semiarid region. We designed a case-control study of community diarrhea in six cities of the Brazil semiarid region with 1200 children aging 2-36 months.

A cross-sectional case-control study of diarrhea was conducted in 1,191 children aged 2 to 36 months from the northeast region of Brazil.

Clinical features of hypertrophic pachymeningitis in a center survey.

Background: Hypertrophic pachymeningitis (HP) is characterized by cranial and/or spinal thickening of the dura mater with or without associated inflammation. Neuroimaging studies reveal dura mater thickening and focal or diffuse contrast enhancement. It is described in association with trauma, infections, tumors, autoimmune/inflammatory diseases, and cerebrospinal fluid hypotension syndrome, with some cases remaining idiopathic.
