Introduction: Treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) in patients with obesity can be challenging. Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) has shown promising results in improving glycemic control and even achieving remission in T2DM patients with obesity. However, the durability of glycemic improvements in T2DM patients following MBS remains insufficiently studied.

Challenges in diagnosis and treatment of KCNJ11-MODY.

Summary: Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY) is a subtype of monogenic diabetes and a rare type of diabetes, which accounts for 1-5% of cases and is often underdiagnosed. The importance of its diagnosis lies in the potential implications that it can have on disease management and offspring. We report a de novo KCNJ11-MODY case and the process of transition from insulin to sulfonylureas.

Neuritogenesis and protective effects activated by Angiotensin 1-7 in astrocytes-neuron interaction.

The renin angiotensin system (RAS) has been studied for its effects on various neurological disorders. The identification of functional receptors for Ang-(1-7) and Ang II peptides in astrocytes highlights the physiological modulation and the important role of these cells in the central nervous system. The present study aims to understand the role of RAS peptides, particularly Ang-(1-7) and Ang II, in the secretion of trophic factors by astrocytes and their effects on hippocampal neurons.

Microbiological characterization of neuropathic diabetic foot infection: a retrospective study at a Portuguese tertiary hospital.

Adequate patient management with effective antibiotic therapy is crucial.This retrospective cohort study aimed to characterize the microbiology and resistance patterns of moderate to severe neuropathic diabetic foot infection in patients hospitalized at a tertiary referral hospital between January 2020 and June 2023.

Distinguishing health-related parameters between metabolically healthy and metabolically unhealthy obesity in women.

Background: Obesity represents a global health crisis, yet a dichotomy is emerging with classification according to the metabolic state into metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO). This study aimed to identify distinctive systemic clinical/endocrinological parameters between MHO individuals, employing a comprehensive comparative analysis of 50 biomarkers. Our emphasis was on routine analytes, ensuring cost-effectiveness for widespread use in diagnosing metabolic health.

Influence of cigarette smoking on the Index of Cardiac Electrophysiological Balance in apparently healthy Angolans.

Tobacco use accelerates atherosclerosis and is one of the predictors of death from ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden death. A new non-invasive parameter, the Index of Cardiac Electrophysiological Balance (iCEB) between depolarization and repolarization of the action potential, was considered a new biomarker for the identification of patients at increased arrhythmic risk. We aimed to evaluate the iCEB in apparently healthy Angolans with habitual cigarette smoking compared to non-smokers.

Psychosocial experiences of involuntary definitive childless women: a comparative study based on reproductive status.

Study Question: Do involuntary definitive childless women have lower psychosocial adjustment levels than women with infertility diagnoses actively trying to conceive and presumably fertile women?

Summary Answer: Involuntary definitive childless women have lower levels of sexual functioning than infertile women actively trying to conceive and presumably fertile women, and higher levels of depression than presumably fertile women.

What Is Known Already: Involuntary definitive childless defines those who wanted to become parents but were unable to do so. Studies have provided evidence about infertility and its psychosocial consequences, but there is a lack of knowledge about the impact of involuntary definitive childlessness, namely on sexual function, social support, marital satisfaction, and psychological adjustment.

Prediabetes remission after bariatric surgery: a 4-years follow-up study.

Background: Bariatric surgery leads to weight loss and to cardiometabolic risk improvement. Although prediabetes remission after bariatric surgery is biologically plausible, data on this topic is scarce. We aimed to assess prediabetes remission rate and clinical predictors of remission in a 4 year follow up period.

Ordered mesoporous silicas for potential applications in solid vaccine formulations.

In an effort to develop efficient vaccine formulations, the use of ordered mesoporous silica (SBA-15) as an antigen carrier has been investigated. SBA-15 has required properties such as high surface area and pore volume, including narrow pore size distribution to protect antigens inside its matrix. COVID-19 Lockdown and Impact on 2-Year Weight Loss in a Bariatric Center.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a worldwide lockdown, which affected physical exercise habits, as well as having a detrimental effect on psychological health and follow-up visits of patients submitted to bariatric surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on the 2-year weight loss of patients submitted to bariatric surgery in our center.

Methods: This was an observational study comparing the weight loss of patients who underwent bariatric surgery from January to March 2020 with a control group submitted to surgery between January and March 2017.

Fellowship in surgical oncology: The results of an experience in Portuguese-speaking African countries.

Cancer incidence rates are increasing worldwide including in Portuguese speaking African countries. We present the results of the fellowship in surgical oncology promoted by the Portuguese Institute of Oncology in Porto (IPO), Fernando Pessoa University, Portugal, and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which involved the training of residents and surgeons from Portuguese-speaking African countries in Portugal. The program's structure and content was the same of UMES/ESSO.

Foreign body ingestion due to detachment of pill dispenser tips in cats: a retrospective study of 13 cases.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate and describe 13 cases in which a pet piller broke during the administration of medication, and the tip was accidentally ingested by the cat.

Methods: A total of 15 presentations to the clinic were identified in a private practice database involving 13 cats in which the silicone tip broke. Two of these cats ingested foreign bodies on two separate occasions.

This disturbs natural processes, creating instability and fragility of natural and social ecosystems. To combat climate change, without compromising technology advancements and maintaining production costs at acceptable levels, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies can be deployed to advance a non-disruptive energy transition.

Systematic literature review of cold-formed steel at elevated temperature scenario.

Cold-formed steels (CFS) or light gauge steels (LGS) are steel sections created through processes without heat application, such as roll forming or press-braking. In the past few decades, the utilization of CFS as a structural material has expanded due to its advantages over the other materials used in the construction industry, consequently increasing the number of studies conducted by many researchers. CFS studies have focused on many research areas, including designing, and analyzing members and systems, connections, sustainability, residual stresses, and post-fire data.

Synthesis of α,α-Diaryl-α-amino Acid Precursors by Reaction of Isocyanoacetate Esters with -Quinone Diimides.

A novel procedure for the synthesis of α,α-diaryl-α-amino acid derivatives has been developed. Silver oxide catalyzes the conjugate addition of α-aryl isocyanoacetates to -quinone diimide, affording the corresponding α,α-diarylisocyano esters in excellent yields and regioselectivities in short reaction times. Acid hydrolysis of the isocyano group provides the corresponding amino acids bearing a diarylated tetrasubstituted carbon atom.

Mid-upper arm circumference in hospitalized pediatric patients with cancer: Is there an association with malnutrition?

Background: Malnutrition is common in children/adolescents with cancer. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) is recommended by the International Society of Pediatric Oncology for measuring nutrition status. The aim was to evaluate the nutrition status of pediatric patients with cancer and verify whether MUAC is associated with malnutrition and length of stay (LOS).

Organophotoredox 1,6-Addition of 3,4-Dihydroquinoxalin-2-ones to -Quinone Methides Using Visible Light.

An organophotoredox 1,6-radical addition of 3,4-dihidroquinoxalin-2-ones to -quinone methides catalyzed by Fukuzumi's photocatalyst is described under the irradiation of a HP Single LED (455 nm). The corresponding 1,1-diaryl compounds bearing a dihydroquinoxalin-2-one moiety (20 examples) are obtained with good to excellent yields under mild reaction conditions. Several experiments have been carried out in order to propose a reaction mechanism.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is characterized by low physical fitness, pain, and depression. The present study aimed to examine the effects of a supervised aquatic exercise program on physical fitness, depression, and pain in women with RA and determine whether decreases in pain mediate depression.

Methods: Forty-three women with RA, divided into an experimental group (EG; n = 21) and a control group (CG; n = 23), participated in a 12-week exercise program.

In this context, optical point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connectivity is seen as an alternative to provide connectivity to multiple sites from a single source, thus potentially both reducing CAPEX and OPEX. Digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) has been shown as a feasible candidate for optical P2MP in view of its ability to generate multiple subcarriers (SC) in the frequency domain that can be used to serve several destinations.
