Objective: to evaluate the feasibility, safety and benefits of minimally invasive surgery for resection of gastric submucosal tumor (GSMT).

Methods: we conducted a retrospective study of medical records of patients undergoing endoscopy-assisted laparoscopic resection of gastric submucosal tumors (prospectively collected) from 2011 to 2014. We evaluated clinical data, surgical approach, clinicopathological characteristics of the GSMT (size, location, histopathological and immunohistochemical exams), outcome and patients follow-up.

Context: Morbid obesity is associated with various co-morbidities, including chronic venous insufficiency. Bariatric surgery is the only effective treatment for morbid obesity, but with potential risks and possible complications, including venous thromboembolism.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of clinical and ultrasonographic signs of chronic venous insufficiency in morbid obese patients in preparation for bariatric surgery and the incidence of post-operative venous thromboembolic disease.

Aim: To study the effects of different protocols of fish oil lipid emulsion (FOLE) infusion on acute inflammation in a rat model of colitis.

Methods: Adult male Wistar rats (n = 51) were randomized into 5 groups to receive parenteral infusion of saline (SS) or soybean oil lipid emulsion (SO), as controls, and FOLE composed of: fish oil alone (FO); a mixture (9:1 v/v) of SO with FO (SO/FO); or 30% soybean oil, 30% medium-chain triglycerides, 25% olive oil, and 15%fish oil (SMOF). After 72 h of intravenous infusion, experimental colitis was induced with acetic acid.

Background: Soybean oil is rich in ω-6 fatty acids, which are associated with higher incidence and more severe cases of inflammatory bowel diseases. The authors evaluated whether partial replacement of soybean oil by medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) or olive oil influenced the incidence and severity of experimental ulcerative colitis by using different parenteral lipid emulsions (LEs).

Background: We evaluated the medium term changes in insulin sensitivity in morbidly obese patients with and without metabolic syndrome before and after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGBP) with silastic ring (Capella-Fobi).

Methods: A longitudinal, clinical intervention study was conducted in 40 patients between 18 and 65 years old, with obesity class II and III (BMI > or =35-52 kg/m(2)), divided into 2 groups: no metabolic syndrome (NMS, n=21) and metabolic syndrome (MS, n=19). Anthropometric measurements, biochemical tests and classification of MS according to the NCEP criteria, were performed pre-operatively and at 3 and 6 months postoperatively.

Unlabelled: Experimental colitis induced by acetic acid has been used extensively as a model for intestinal inflammatory disease. Colonic tissue lesions of intestinal inflammatory disease patients seem to be related to the increased local production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, TNF-alpha, and IFN-gamma).
