Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a devastating disease of the neonatal gastrointestinal tract. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), odoriferous compounds released as a byproduct of bacterial metabolism, can be used as a proxy for gut health. We hypothesized that patients with NEC would have different microbial profiles and elicit different VOC signatures as assessed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or an electronic nose compared to controls.

Effective control is central to the State sponsorship system for deep seabed mining (DSM) in the Area. It ensures there is always a State(s) responsible for private sector company DSM contractors, and is a precondition for the relationship between a non-State ISA contractor and its sponsoring State (UNCLOS). Two core approaches have emerged in literature and in practice to interpreting 'effective control': 'regulatory control' and 'economic control'.

Article Synopsis
  • In a study of 4011 patients who had unilateral cT1a-b renal mass treated with partial nephrectomy, researchers aimed to explore how a surgeon's experience affects surgical outcomes, specifically acute kidney injury (AKI) and kidney function a year post-surgery.
  • Previously, it was known that complications and ischemia times improved with surgeon experience, but there was limited data on long-term kidney function.
  • The findings revealed no significant association between surgical experience and AKI or recovery of kidney function in either laparoscopic or robot-assisted techniques, suggesting other factors may play a more crucial role in these outcomes.

  • The European Association of Urology (EAU) developed guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic to prioritize surgeries for patients with urological malignancies, focusing on "high-risk" cases.
  • A study compared tumor characteristics of patients treated during the pandemic (2020-2021) with those treated post-pandemic (2022-2023), finding that while surgical procedures were similar, certain surgeries like radical prostatectomies and partial nephrectomies were significantly lower during the pandemic.
  • Despite the differences in surgery rates, the study found no significant changes in tumor pathological features, indicating that effective prioritization and centralization of care can help maintain the quality of oncological treatment during health crises.

  • Frailty is a significant geriatric syndrome affecting older adults, particularly influencing their surgical and oncological care, especially in cases of renal masses or renal cell carcinoma (RCC).
  • A review of literature highlighted that frailty is a negative prognostic factor that can impact treatment outcomes; screening tools like the G8 and Mini-COG are essential for assessing older patients and guiding comprehensive evaluations by geriatricians.
  • Integrating geriatricians into multidisciplinary tumor boards and creating specific care pathways for frailty assessment can enhance individualized treatment strategies and improve clinical outcomes for older patients with RCC.

Despite advancements in therapeutic strategies, the development of drug resistance and metastasis remains a serious concern for the efficacy of chemotherapy against colorectal cancer (CRC). We have previously demonstrated that low expression of ribosomal protein uL3 positively correlates with chemoresistance in CRC patients. Here, we demonstrated that the loss of uL3 increased the metastatic capacity of CRC cells in chick embryos.

The International Patient Organisation for Primary Immunodeficiencies (IPOPI) held its second Global Multi-Stakeholders' Summit, an annual stimulating and forward-thinking meeting uniting experts to anticipate pivotal upcoming challenges and opportunities in the field of primary immunodeficiency (PID). The 2023 summit focused on three key identified discussion points: (i) How can immunoglobulin (Ig) therapy meet future personalized patient needs? (ii) Pandemic preparedness: what's next for public health and potential challenges for the PID community? (iii) Diagnosing PIDs in 2030: what needs to happen to diagnose better and to diagnose more? Clinician-Scientists, patient representatives and other stakeholders explored avenues to improve Ig therapy through mechanistic insights and tailored Ig preparations/products according to patient-specific needs and local exposure to infectious agents, amongst others. Urgency for pandemic preparedness was discussed, as was the threat of shortage of antibiotics and increasing antimicrobial resistance, emphasizing the need for representation of PID patients and other vulnerable populations throughout crisis and care management.

  • People who get solid organ transplants often have problems with erectile dysfunction, which can be affected by their other health issues and problems with their organ.
  • This study looked at how safe it is to use penile prostheses in these patients and found that about 11% of them had complications, mostly infections and device failures.
  • Even though there are some risks, doctors can feel more confident about using these prostheses in transplant recipients since the study showed similar reoperation rates compared to non-transplanted patients.

Introduction: Since the initial identification of Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) and Bickerstaff brainstem encephalitis (BBE),significant milestones have been achieved in understanding these diseases.Discoveries of common serum antibodies (IgG anti-GQ1b), antecedent infections, neurophysiological data, andneuroimaging suggested a shared autoimmune pathogenetic mechanism rather than distinct pathogenesis, leadingto the hypothesis that both diseases are part of a unified syndrome, termed "Fisher-Bickerstaff syndrome". The subsequent identification of atypical anti-GQ1b-positive forms expanded the classification to a broader condition known as "Anti-GQ1b-Antibody syndrome".

Background: Current potential living kidney donor's assessment includes functional and anatomical evaluation. Scintigraphy is recommended in some cases and some centers include this test in the donor's protocol. Recent studies advocate for the avoidance of this test as CT or MRI volumetry showed to accurately assess donor's renal function.

Perovskite-inspired materials (PIMs) provide low-toxicity and air-stable photo-absorbers for several possible optoelectronic devices. In this context, the pnictogen-based halides CuAgBiI (CABI) are receiving increasing attention in photovoltaics. Despite extensive studies on power conversion efficiency and shelf-life stability, nearly no attention has been given to the physicochemical properties of the interface between CABI and the hole transport layer (HTL), which can strongly impact overall cell operations.

  • Deterioration of kidney function can lead to higher mortality rates, and it's unclear how different surgical options (partial nephrectomy [PN] vs. radical nephrectomy [RN]) for large renal masses impact long-term kidney health.
  • A study analyzing data from 23 institutions showed that patients undergoing PN experienced significantly lower rates of acute kidney injury (AKI) and better recovery of kidney function at one year compared to those undergoing RN.
  • The findings suggest that avoiding RN, when possible, is beneficial for preserving kidney function and reducing the risk of serious complications related to kidney health after surgery.

Several theoretical studies at different levels of theory have attempted to calculate the absolute position of the SnO conduction band, whose knowledge is key for its effective application in optoelectronic devices such us, for example, perovskite solar cells. However, the predicted band edges fall outside the experimentally measured range. In this work, we introduce a computational scheme designed to calculate the conduction band minimum values of SnO, yielding results aligned with experiments.
