Explosively driven shock tubes present challenges in terms of safety concerns and expensive upkeep of test facilities but provide more realistic approximations to the air blast resulting from free-field detonations than those provided by gas-driven shock tubes. Likewise, the geometry of conical shock tubes can naturally approximate a sector cut from a spherically symmetric blast, leading to a better agreement with the blast profiles of free-field detonations when compared to those provided by shock tubes employing constant cross sections. The work presented in this article documents the design, fabrication, and testing of an explosively driven conical shock tube whose goal was to closely replicate the blast profile seen from a larger, free-field detonation.

The authors describe the surgical method and results of nonexpansive one-piece multivel laminoplasty of the whole lumbar spine, for microsurgical resection of extensive spinal tumors. This technique allows a very comfortable approach to the dura and intradural content, as well as a perfect replacement of the posterior spinal arch with supporting elements and an optimal reconstruction of the spinal anatomy. A nonexpansive whole lumbar one-piece laminoplasty was performed for resection of extensive multilevel lumbar tumors.

Objective: This study evaluates if side posture lumbar manipulation is associated with a refractory period of the audible "crack" and if so, to quantify this refractory period across subjects.

Methods: Three subjects were exposed to multiple "baseline" side posture manipulations until no further audible cracks were recorded. "Test-refractory period" manipulations were administered after a set time (ie, potential refractory period) at which point the number of audible cracks was recorded.

This is a case of a benign leiomyoma of the cecum that perforated the bowel wall and manifested as an acute surgical abdomen. The literature was reviewed and the lesion was found to be uncommon. Clinical pictures may vary, but a colonic mass of this nature should be treated as a cancer, as it is not usually possible to distinguish benign from malignant lesions preoperatively.
