A two-year-old spayed female shih-tzu was referred with a 10-month history of lethargy, chronic diarrhoea and weight loss. On presentation, a partial response to antibiotics was noted. Physical examination revealed an abdominal mass, and serum biochemistry and haematology revealed a mature neutrophilia, hypoalbuminaemia and a non-regenerative anaemia.

Barium impregnated polyethylene spheres (BIPS) are used in small animal medicine as an alternative to barium sulfate for radiographic studies of the gastrointestinal tract. Occult metastatic intestinal adenocarcinoma resulting in pathological fracture of the proximal humerus.

Intestinal adenocarcinomas are rare but have been described in the literature. The present case is unusual in both its clinical presentation and in the distribution of metastatic lesions. The sequestrum formation and pathological fracture present are most commonly associated with osteomyelitis in horses and the details of the case highlight the need for differential diagnosis in these particular circumstances and of which clinicians should be aware.

Effect of hyperbaric oxygen treatment on incorporation of an autogenous cancellous bone graft in a nonunion diaphyseal ulnar defect in cats.

Tetraparesis due to vertebral physeal fracture in an adult dog with congenital hypothyroidism.

A four-year-old male affenpinscher was referred for evaluation of hindlimb weakness that had progressed to tetraparesis over a period of four weeks. Neurological examination was suggestive of a cervical spinal cord lesion. Radiographic examination revealed diffuse skeletal immaturity with open physes and epiphyseal dysplasia in long bones and vertebrae, consistent with a diagnosis of congenital hypothyroidism.

Deep-frozen allogeneic cancellous bone grafts in 10 dogs: a case series.

Deep-frozen, aseptically collected and processed allogeneic cancellous bone was implanted in eight dogs during the surgical repair of diaphyseal long bone fractures and in two dogs during arthrodeses. A combined allogeneic and autogeneic cancellous bone graft was used in two fractures with a segmental bone loss of more than 5 cm. Bone union occurred in five fractures and in both arthrodeses.

Large bowel transit times using radiopaque markers in normal cats.

Seven normal, young adult, female cats each had its colon evacuated with warm-water enemas (at 24 hours, 12 hours, and one hour) before oral administration of a gelatin capsule containing 20 radiopaque markers to determine normal colonic transit times. Traumatic ear canal separations and para-aural abscessation in three dogs.

Three dogs were presented for para-aural abscessation. Ear canal separations were suspected preoperatively, based on histories of trauma, physical examination findings of minimally inflamed external ear canals with abrupt endings, and radiographic evidence of discontinuity of the ear canals. Concurrent otitis media, based on radiographic findings, was diagnosed in all three dogs.

Perineal herniorrhaphy: perioperative data from 100 dogs.

One hundred dogs (83 intact males, 15 castrated males, and two intact females) underwent 110 perineal herniorrhaphy procedures. Mixed-breed dogs (n = 32), miniature poodles (n = 14), Boston terriers (n = 11), and Pekingese (n = 9) were represented most frequently. Perineal swelling (n = 48) and a perineal defect on rectal palpation (n = 31) were common clinical signs.

Hypertrophic osteopathy associated with Mycobacterium fortuitum pneumonia in a dog.

Mycobacterium fortuitum was isolated from the lung of a dog that had new periosteal bone formation consistent with hypertrophic osteopathy.
