Background: Gliomas are tumors of the central nervous system derived from glial cells. They show cellular heterogeneity and lack specific diagnostic markers. Although a possible role for the eicosanoid cascade has been suggested in glioma tumorigenesis, the relationship between enzymes and receptors implicated in arachidonic acid metabolism, with histological tumor type has not yet been determined.

One hundred forty-eight consecutive patients hospitalized at the Hospital de Clínicas, Montevideo, with a clinical diagnosis of stroke were studied: 85 had ischemic strokes and 63 presented with intracerebral hemorrhages. The potentially predictive variables (past medical history, clinical assessment, neuroimaging, biochemical analysis) were evaluated within the first 24 hours of admission; patient follow-up was performed until they left the hospital or died.

Aims: To examine the evolution of CVA and its subgroups by looking at the rates of mortality, recurrences and extra-neurological complications. We also sought to determine the value of different clinical scales and urinary incontinence at the beginning of CVA as factors that could potentially predict its severity.
Introduction: Knowledge about the epidemiology of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), or stroke, in the town of Rivera, Uruguay, would be useful as the basis on which to apply health care strategies both in the prevention of risk factors and in early diagnosis and treatment.
Aims: To determine the incidence of CVA in the town of Rivera and to study the association between certain risk factors and the pathological type of CVA.
Patients And Methods: The study, which spanned the period between 1st March 2000 and 28th February 2001, was conducted in the town of Rivera, which has a population of 62,859 and is located in the north of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay.
A double-blind study was carried out in 30 patients suffering from spasticity due to cerebrovascular lesions to compare the long-term efficacy and tolerability of tizanidine hydrochloride with that of baclofen. A 2-week titration phase identified the optimum dose of tizanidine (max. 20 mg/day) or baclofen (max.

The clinical and electroencephalographic characteristics are analyzed and it is emphasized: (1) The predominance of generalized seizures over focal fits, and among these last, the higher incidence of motor seizures are stressed. (2) The incidence of early seizures was of 5% in this series.
