Introduction: Fentanyl-related overdose is an ongoing concern among countries with high prescription opioid utilisation. This study examines trends in transdermal fentanyl utilisation and fatal fentanyl overdose across Australia between 2003 and 2015, overall, and by age/sex.
Methods: This was a retrospective nationwide study of prescription dispensings and coronial records.
Angioedema is a serious adverse event that can manifest as lower extremity edema, face swelling, rash, hives, and a swollen tongue, which can sometimes lead to airway constriction and death. It is a well-documented reaction within the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor drug class, where the bradykinin pathway leads to angioedema. We report a case where a patient experienced angioedema after taking venlafaxine.

Using intravenous (IV) insulin to shift potassium intracellularly may cause hypoglycemia, requiring additional treatment or longer hospitalization. Literature on insulin dosing in this context is limited, with one previous study indicating that 5 units of IV insulin might be as effective and result in less hypoglycemia than the standard dose of 10 units of IV insulin.

Methods: A system dynamics model was developed with a multidisciplinary modelling consortium. The model population comprised Australians aged 40 years and over, and the scope encompassed acute and chronic CVD as well as primary and secondary prevention.
Widespread use of reduced-sodium salts can potentially lower excessive population-level dietary sodium intake. This study aimed to identify key barriers and facilitators to implementing reduced-sodium salt as a population level intervention. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with key informants from academia, the salt manufacturing industry, and government.

Feedback-based interventions applied in controlled, laboratory environments have shown promising results for mobility rehabilitation, enhancing the benefits of standard therapy. However, the effectiveness of sensor-based feedback to improve gait in actual outpatient physical therapy settings is unknown.

Materials And Methods: We defined minimum viable product requirements centered around Android and iOS platform availability, data capture specifications and project initiation workflow, study data synchronization, and data security. After launch, we added features based on feedback from end-users and REDCap administrators.
Purpose: In acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), dead space fraction has been independently associated with mortality. We hypothesized that early measurement of the difference between arterial and end-tidal CO (arterial-ET difference), a surrogate for dead space fraction, would predict mortality in mechanically ventilated patients with ARDS.
Methods: We performed two separate exploratory analyses.
Aims: To examine trends in the prevalence and incidence of prescription opioid analgesic use in Australian women of reproductive age and to estimate the number of calendar months each year that women were dispensed opioids.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study involving women aged 15-44 years using pharmaceutical dispensing claims for a 10% random sample of Australians. For the period 2013-2020, we calculated the annual prevalence and incidence of opioid analgesic dispensing per 100 (%) population by opioid type and age group.

Methods: We conducted an open-label, cluster-randomized trial involving persons from 600 villages in rural China. The participants had a history of stroke or were 60 years of age or older and had high blood pressure.

The accelerated approval pathway for new drugs in the United States is often praised but faces growing criticism of whether it is finding the appropriate balance between uncertainty, access and cost. To support efforts to strengthen the pathway, this paper provides an analysis of key concerns and the advantages and disadvantages of ten potential policy reforms - those achievable through the US FDA action alone, and those that would require a combination of government, payer and life science industry actions. Accelerated approval sits at the heart of many of the controversies regarding drug approvals and pricing, and this analysis provides perspectives on how best to strengthen the pathway within the broader landscape of an innovative US healthcare system.

Methods: We used national claims data to investigate antibiotic dispensing trends from November 2015 to October 2020 and whether changes reflected reductions in primary care consultations.
A number of organizations are producing resource stratified guidelines (RSGs) for cancer. Despite using similar definitions of resource levels, systemic treatment recommendations often differ between organizations. We systematically searched for RSGs focusing on solid tumors.

Furthermore, this study aimed to explore patient awareness surrounding chemotherapy-induced inner ear damage, known as ototoxicity, and assess what support they had been offered.
Methods: Participants were adults who had undergone chemotherapy, recruited from cancer clinics, charities and social media.

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate research retention of older minority women with urinary incontinence (UI) using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) versus a traditional research approach.
Methods: An ancillary prospective study was conducted within an ongoing pilot randomized clinical trial to treat UI. Participants were recruited using CBPR in collaboration with a local community versus a traditional research approach at an academic center.
Concomitant use of pregabalin with opioids and/or benzodiazepines is common, despite the increased risks. However, clinical trials suggest pregabalin can have an opioid-sparing effect when treating acute postoperative pain. We explored how opioid and benzodiazepine use changed over time in people initiating pregabalin, using dispensing claims data for a 10% sample of Australians (2013-19).

Background: Since the emergence of COVID-19 there have been increasing global concerns about delays and/or discontinuations in cancer care. However, it is unclear to what extent systemic cancer therapy was impacted by COVID-19 in countries with relatively low COVID-19 infection rates. We examined changes in systemic cancer therapy in Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Despite the significant economic cost and negative impact of absenteeism and presenteeism in health care, there has been limited research looking at personality (using the five-factor model) and absenteeism and presenteeism in nurses.
Methods: A cross-sectional online survey of 320 nurses.
In response to a statewide stay-at-home order during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Seniors Clinic launched an interprofessional student-led, telephone-based outreach initiative targeting older adults deemed high risk for social isolation. The initiative primarily aimed to enhance students' geriatric and interprofessional education during a time when clinical learning opportunities were limited, as well as supporting geriatric patients and providers through outreach during the COVID-19 quarantine period. Nurse practitioner, medical, and pharmacy students participated in virtual patient contact, geriatric case-based learning, and team-based interprofessional development.

Where there is disparity in access this may result in unwarranted variation and disparity in outcomes. Individual, clinical and wider contextual factors have been associated with these disparities, however this remains poorly understood for women with secondary breast cancer.

In order to optimally control greenhouses' environmental parameters, one indispensable requirement is to accurately predict crop yields based on given environmental parameter settings. In addition, crop yield forecasting in greenhouses plays an important role in greenhouse farming planning and management, which allows cultivators and farmers to utilize the yield prediction results to make knowledgeable management and financial decisions.
