9-Aminoacridine structures hold much potential for accessing small molecule therapeutics. This core is present in a range of pharmaceuticals for the treatment of ailments such as malaria, inflammation, viral and bacterial infections, and cancer. For the latter, there remains a need to develop and/or improve chemotherapeutics to counteract issues of uptake, drug resistance, and selectivity for cancer cells over healthy cells.

Using the Flipped Classroom Model in Surgical Education: Efficacy and Trainee Perception.

Objective: To describe the feasibility, efficacy, and learner perception of the flipped classroom model for teaching conferences within surgical training programs.

Design: For the flipped classroom conferences, video lectures were prepared by a faculty member, and sent to all attendees at least 2 days prior to lecture. The conference time was then spent going over cases and questions, rather than traditional lecture.

Prospective, randomized, single-blinded, multi-center phase II trial of two HER2 peptide vaccines, GP2 and AE37, in breast cancer patients to prevent recurrence.

Purpose: AE37 and GP2 are HER2 derived peptide vaccines. AE37 primarily elicits a CD4+ response while GP2 elicits a CD8+ response against the HER2 antigen. These peptides were tested in a large randomized trial to assess their ability to prevent recurrence in HER2 expressing breast cancer patients.

Iterative multiple imputation is a popular technique for missing data analysis. It updates the parameter estimators iteratively using multiple imputation method. This technique is convenient and flexible.

Initial safety analysis of a randomized phase II trial of nelipepimut-S + GM-CSF and trastuzumab compared to trastuzumab alone to prevent recurrence in breast cancer patients with HER2 low-expressing tumors.

The development of HER2-targeted therapy has decreased recurrence rates and improved survival, transforming the natural history of HER2-positive breast cancer. However only a minority of breast cancer patients benefit as these agents are not used in patients with tumors expressing low levels of HER2. Preclinical data suggests a synergistic action of HER2-targeted vaccination with trastuzumab.

Many meta-analyses use individual studies that do not attempt to adjust for multiple testing or multiple modeling.

Effects of HLA status and HER2 status on outcomes in breast cancer patients at risk for recurrence - Implications for vaccine trial design.

Immunotherapy, using peptide-based cancer vaccines is being studied to assess its potential in breast cancer. Trials of HLA-restricted peptide vaccines have been difficult to enroll given HLA subtype restrictions. It is necessary to determine the prognostic significance of HLA-status in breast cancer if patients who are ineligible to receive a vaccine due to their HLA-status are used as controls.

Phase Ib trial of folate binding protein (FBP)-derived peptide vaccines, E39 and an attenuated version, E39': An analysis of safety and immune response.

Unlabelled: In this randomized phase Ib trial, we tested combining the E39 peptide vaccine with a vaccine created from E39', an attenuated version of E39. Patients with breast or ovarian cancer, who were disease-free after standard of care therapy, were enrolled and randomized to one of three arms. Arm EE received six E39 inoculations; arm EE' received three E39 inoculations followed by three E39'; and arm E'E received three E39' inoculations, followed by three E39.

Rectal Trauma: Evidence-Based Practices.

The management of rectal trauma has often been lumped in with colon trauma when, in fact, it is a unique entity. The anatomic nature of the rectum (with its intra- and extraperitoneal segments) lends itself to unique circumstances when it comes to management and treatment. Clinicians are expected to select a therapy based on their appraisal of evidence on benefit-to-risk profiles of therapies. In the management of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), evidence is typically expressed in terms of risk (proportion) of event, risk reduction, relative and hazard rate reduction, or relative reduction in the mean number of magnetic resonance imaging lesions. Interpreting treatment effect using these measures from a RRMS clinical trial is fairly reliable; however, this might not be the case when treatment effect is expressed in terms of the number needed to treat (NNT).

Portable head CT scan and its effect on intracranial pressure, cerebral perfusion pressure, and brain oxygen.

Object: Follow-up head CT scans are important in neurocritical care but involve intrahospital transport that may be associated with potential hazards including a deleterious effect on brain tissue oxygen pressure (PbtO(2)). Portable head CT (pHCT) scans offer an alternative imaging technique without a need for patient transport. In this study, the investigators examined the effects of pHCT scans on intracranial pressure (ICP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), and PbtO(2) in patients with severe brain injury.

The use of a portable head CT scanner in the intensive care unit.

Transport of critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients may be hazardous. In this study, we examined the use of a portable head CT scanner (CereTom) in the ICU to assess its feasibility, safety, and radiological quality. Two hundred and twenty-five portable head CT scans were obtained from 114 patients (mean age = 57 +/- 18 years) treated in a neurosurgical intensive care unit at a university-based Level I trauma center.

A comparison of memory for homicide, non-homicidal violence, and positive life experiences.

Defendants commonly claim amnesia for their criminal actions especially in cases involving extreme violence. While some claims are malingered or result from physiological factors, other cases may represent genuine partial or complete amnesia resulting from the psychological distress and/or extreme emotion associated with the perpetration of the crime. Fifty Canadian homicide offenders described their memories of their homicide, a non-homicide violent offense, and their most positive adulthood life experience.

The objective of this paper was to correlate optical changes of tissue during wound healing measured by near infrared (NIR) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) with histologic changes in an animal model. Amplitude and phase of scattered light were obtained in a diabetic rat and control model and biopsies were taken for blood vessel ingrowth and collagen concentration. NIR absorption coefficient correlated with blood vessel ingrowth over time, in both the control and diabetic animals.

Equilibrium-based bipolar neurological modeling.

This work introduces an equilibrium-based dynamic model for the characterization, classification, and diagnostic analysis of bipolar disorder, a psychiatric syndrome with manic and depressive phases. The new model extends the traditional spectrum model of mood states from a static and closed world to a dynamic open-world of equilibria with a bipolar universal modus ponens (BUMP). The utility of the new model is illustrated in diagnostic analysis of depression and clinical psychopharmacology of different phases of this disorder.

Yin Yang dynamic neurobiological modeling and diagnostic analysis of major depressive and bipolar disorders.

Since millions suffer from major depressive and bipolar disorders, the modeling, characterization, classification, and diagnostic analysis of such mental disorders bear great significance in medical and pharmaceutical research. YinYang bipolar sets are introduced for neurobiological modeling and diagnostic analysis of such disorders. Are memories for sexually traumatic events "special"? A within-subjects investigation of trauma and memory in a clinical sample.

According to a long-standing clinical tradition, sexually traumatic experiences are processed and recalled differently from other experiences, often leading to memory impairment. In this study, we compared the characteristics of traumatic memories for sexual violence and two other types of emotional experiences. N=44 women recruited from a local sexual trauma agency were asked to recall and describe three autobiographical events: sexual abuse/assault, a non-sexual trauma, and a positive emotional event.
