Peptidoglycan hydrolases facilitate bacterial cell wall growth by creating space for insertion of new material and allowing physical separation of daughter cells. In , three peptidoglycan amidases, AmiA, AmiB and AmiC, cleave septal peptidoglycan during cell division. The LytM-domain proteins EnvC and NlpD activate these amidases either from inside the cell or the outer membrane: EnvC binds to the cytoplasmic membrane-anchored divisome components FtsEX, and NlpD and ActS are outer membrane lipoproteins.

In recent and coming years, many centers are changing their TBI setup to a conformal isocentric technique, providing superior homogeneity and control of the target prescription dose, and more freedom for individualized organ-at-risk sparing or dose-escalation. Also, more specifically bone-marrow- and/or lymphatics-targeted therapies such as Total Marrow (+ Lymphoid) Irradiation (TMI / TMLI), and Total Lymphoid Irradiation (TLI) are established and prospectively evaluated in several centers.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective, cohort study of patients that had received a PGI between February 2022 and December 2023. An intraluminal polypropylene suture was placed to prevent early hypotony in all cases.
Purpose: Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) following corneal transplantation (CT) presents a significant risk for graft failure and visual impairment. This retrospective cohort study aims to evaluate the outcomes of different glaucoma surgeries and corneal graft survival rates in patients who have undergone CT.
Methods: A single-center, retrospective cohort was conducted on all patients at our tertiary hospital who had received glaucoma surgery following corneal transplant surgery from 2020 to 2023.
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of disorders characterized by progressive degeneration of discrete groups of neurons causing severe disability. The main risk factor is age, hence their incidence is rapidly increasing worldwide due to the rise in life expectancy. Although the causes of the disease are not identified in about 90% of the cases, in the last decades there has been great progress in understanding the basis for neurodegeneration.

Therefore, we aimed to assess outcomes after metastasis-directed stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) in various clinical scenarios. We conducted an international retrospective cohort study in thirteen centers including breast cancer patients receiving SRT to any metastatic site.

Among the biopolymers used to obtain porous scaffolds, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) stands out due its mechanical and biodegradability properties, although its low bioactivity to promote bone regeneration is a great challenge. In this research, a 3D scaffold based on PLA reinforced with bioceramics such as graphene oxide (GO) and β-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) was designed and characterized by FTIR, XRD, DSC, SEM and mechanical tests.

RT in deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) often allows better protection of organs at risk. This prospective study compares surface-guided DIBH with free breathing (FB) in patients with left-sided BC, by evaluating individual cardiovascular risks and treatment plan dosimetry.

In this study, an electroanalytical methodology based on differential pulse voltammetry is developed for the analysis of sulfamethoxazole at trace levels in water. After the optimization of the instrumental parameters a linear range from 6.

Specifically, Clotiapine and Sulfamethoxazole were selected as models for antipsychotics and antibiotics, respectively. Different nanostructures were studied as modifiers, including both transition metals and carbon-based materials.

The characterization performed by XRD, TEM, SEM, EDS mapping and FTIR confirmed the correct synthesis of Fe-MOF as well as its correct retention in the elaborated membranes. The usefulness and effectiveness of the Fe-MOF nanofiber membrane as a catalyst for the electro-Fenton process was evaluated by performing sulfamethoxazole degradation tests.

Both involve an avalanche of electrons accelerated to relativistic energies but are otherwise different. Glows are known to last for one to hundreds of seconds, have moderate intensities and originate from quasi-stationary thundercloud fields.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThunderstorms emit fluxes of gamma rays known as gamma-ray glows, sporadically observed by aircraft, balloons and from the ground. Observations report increased gamma-ray emissions by tens of percent up to two orders of magnitude above the background, sometimes abruptly terminated by lightning discharges. Glows are produced by the acceleration of energetic electrons in high-electric-field regions within thunderclouds and contribute to charge dissipation.

To ensure a high-quality product while maintaining welfare in captive environments, it is crucial to develop non-invasive methods for testing health biomarkers. Proteins found in skin mucus offer a non-invasive approach to monitoring octopus welfare.

The escalating prevalence of new psychoactive substances (NPSs) poses a significant public health challenge, evidenced by the vast chemical diversity, with over 500 substances reported annually to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime-Early Warning Advisory (UNODC-EWA) in the past five years. Among NPSs, synthetic cathinones are gaining a lot of popularity among users. Notably, synthetic cathinones accounted for approximately 50% of the total quantity of NPSs reported as seized by EU Member States in 2021.

This review evaluated the frequency of antidepressant use before and after COVID-19. Once the most consumed antidepressants were identified, detecting a variation in the frequency of consumption on the different continents, an overview of their life cycle was carried out, specifying which antidepressants are mostly detected and the places where there is a greater concentration.

The prevalence of this emerging worldwide problem has been increasing during the last decades, especially in industrialized countries, being estimated to affect 6-8% of young children and about 2-4% of adults. Marine organisms are an important source of bioactive substances with the potential to functionally improve the immune system, reduce food allergy sensitization and development, and even have an anti-allergic action in food allergy.

The aim of the study was to determine the levels of the main eCBs and N-acylethanolamines (NAEs) in COVID-19 patients during the acute and post-acute phase of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Samples collected before December 31, 2020 were used for the determination of circulating eCB levels by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFriedreich ataxia is a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder resulting from reduced levels of the protein frataxin due to an expanded GAA repeat in the FXN gene. This deficiency causes progressive degeneration of specific neuronal populations in the cerebellum and the consequent loss of movement coordination and equilibrium, which are some of the main symptoms observed in affected individuals. Like in other neurodegenerative diseases, previous studies suggest that glial cells could be involved in the neurodegenerative process and disease progression in patients with Friedreich ataxia.
