Formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (fMLP) and 1-oleoyl-2-acetyl-glycerol (OAG) are synergistic stimuli of the respiratory burst of neutrophils. Simultaneous exposure to both agents greatly enhanced superoxide production, both in rate and extent. OAG potentiated the response to fMLP also in Ca++ -free medium.

Responses of 71 cells (35 cells in males; 36 cells in females) were recorded to 1 μg of 10 pheromones and three host terpenes. The olfactory cells were classified into four types based on sensitivity and specificity for the various odors: (1) 3,2-MCHone (3-methyl-2-cyclohexenone) cells; (2) 3,2-MCHol (3-methyl-2-cyclohexenol) cells; (3) frontalin cells; and (4) synergist cells.

We found this phenomenon to be highly specific in the bark beetle predatorThanasimus dubius. Olfactory responses and behavioral tests revealed that the predator is guided to its major preyDendroctonusfrontalis by the primary enantiomer of the pheromone of the prey, (1S, 5R)-(-)-frontalin.

Eighteen infants received routine diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) immunization at 2, 4, and 6 months of age; 17 other infants received routine immunization and an additional DTP immunization in the newborn nursery. Antibody was determined on samples of cord blood and whole blood obtained at 4, 6, and 9 months of age.

Male and female beetles were 10 and 100 times more sensitive to 3,2-MCH-one and 3,2-MCHol than to the other compounds.

Electro-physiological studies revealed that antennal olfactory receptor cells were significantly more responsive to (1S, 5R)-(-)-frontalin than to (1R, 5S)-(+)-frontalin. Both enantiomers stimulated the same olfactory cells which suggests that each cell possesses at least two types of enantiomer-specific acceptors.

Such cells subsequently differentiate and acquire the properties of inflammatory macrophages. The latter process appears to be under the control of prostaglandin E2 and possibly other cyclooxygenase products which are formed as a consequence of phagocytosis and seem to act as feed-back inhibitors.

Beetle response was highest in late winter and early spring, and lowest in midsummer and early fall. Males consistently responded higher than females.

Patients with fibrositis differed in both elevation and variability in their MMPI profiles, indicating that they were more psychologically disturbed than patients with rheumatoid or other types of arthritis. The fact that almost all of the fibrositis patients' MMPI scales were higher suggests that we might be dealing with a number of different psychologic disturbances that have stiffness and musculoskeletal pain as principal and common symptoms.

At higher concentrations, response to the mixture of the two aldehyde components of grandlure was significantly higher than to the two alcohol components. Only one vicinal dimethyl analog elicited a significantly higher response than the control.

The incorporation of the new born (low risk) nursery as a component of a division of ambulatory and community pediatrics presents an opportunity to address many of these issues and provides a focus for mother-child and family-institution bonding. In the University of California, Irvine, Medical Center nursery, management plans of residents and medical students are reviewed by a multidisciplinary team.

Sixty-nine rat mandibular molars were exposed surgically, and the pulpal response to ZOE with a purified form of eugenol versus ZOE with stock eugenol was investigated. Evaluation and analysis of the control and experimental specimens at 1, 3, 7 and 21 days indicated that there were no differences in the amount of inflammation observed between the two groups. Thus, it may be inferred from the results of this study that the impurities found in stock eugenol are not of clinical significance.

Succinate dehydrogenase activity in the odontogenic tissues of the hairless mouse (hr/hr) has been studied from the initiation of the dental lamina through apposition. Enzyme activities were designated as negative, slight, moderate and strong as a function of intensity of the reaction product. Enzyme levels in the odontogenic tissues increased with advancing tooth morphogenesis.

Animals were divided into sedentary and exercise groups, and one-half of each received either a normal or atherogenic diet. The exercise consisted of 30 min of treadmill running, 5 days/wk, for 8 wk.
