Light-emitting diode (LED) lamps are efficient elicitors of secondary metabolites. To investigate the influence of LED light on steviol glycosides (SGs) and phenolic compounds biosynthesis, stevia shoots were cultured under the following LED lights: white-WL, blue-B, red-R, 70% red and 30% blue-RB, 50% UV, 35% red and 15% blue-RBUV, 50% green, 35% red and 15% blue-RBG, 50% yellow, 35% red and 15% blue-RBY, 50% far-red, 35% red and 15% blue-RBFR and white fluorescent light (WFl, control). Ampicillin (AMP) and amoxicillin (AMX) are popular antibiotics, which are penicillin derivatives, and are used in both human and veterinary medicine. In the conducted study, AMP, AMX and their mixtures did not cause major changes in the total bacterial counts in soil samples, and even an increase in the bacterial counts from 3,700,000 to 6,260,000 colony-forming units (cfu) per gram of soil dry weight (g of soil DW) was observed for minimal amounts of these drugs in the soil. The total abundance of fungi, on the other hand, increased from values ranging from 17,000 to 148,000 cfu∙g of soil DW to a level of 32,000 to 131,000 cfu∙g of soil DW.

Microbes commonly deploy a risky strategy to acquire nutrients from their environment, involving the production of costly public goods that can be exploited by neighbouring individuals. Why engage in such a strategy when an exploitation-free alternative is readily available whereby public goods are kept private? We address this by examining metabolism of Saccharomyces cerevisiae in its native form and by creating a new three-strain synthetic community deploying different strategies of sucrose metabolism. Public-metabolizers digest resources externally, private-metabolizers internalize resources before digestion, and cheats avoid the metabolic costs of digestion but exploit external products generated by competitors.
