Observers fear that deepfakes will shake the very foundations of democracy. Notwithstanding, in-depth scholarly analyses of deepfakes' political impact are rare, and do not consider theories of democracy. This contribution helps close this research gap, drawing on Warren's problem-oriented democracy theory, as well as theories of deliberative democracy and contributions on the role of trust in democracies.

Examination of the carrier state was performed in 744 unrelated mothers of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy/Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD/BMD) probands with identified mutations in the dystrophin gene. Owing to that it was possible to assess frequency and type of new mutations in the gene. Contrary to the Japanese observations of Lee et al.

In the material of 227 families with Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), we found nine non-consanguineous families with 17 male individuals carrying a rare mutation-a single exon 48 deletion of the dystrophin gene-who were affected with a very mild or subclinical form of BMD. They were usually detected thanks to accidental findings of elevated serum creatine phosphokinase (sCPK). A thorough clinical analysis of the carriers, both children (12) and adults (5), revealed in some of them muscle hypotonia (10/17) and/or very mild muscle weakness (9/17), as well as decreased tendon reflexes (6/17).

Article Synopsis
  • Approximately 10-15% of pregnancies end in a spontaneous miscarriage during the first trimester, often due to chromosomal issues like aneuploidies.
  • Genetic analysis of miscarriage can involve methods like G-banding karyotyping and other molecular techniques, but their effectiveness is influenced by sample type and quality.
  • The text emphasizes the importance of proper collection and preparation of chorionic villi from miscarriages, and addresses challenges such as maternal cell contamination and placental mosaicism for accurate genetic interpretation and counseling.

Patau syndrome was first described in 1960 as a group of birth defects caused by trisomy of chromosome 13 (T13). Providing accurate information and relevant reproductive genetic counseling that would allow parents to make informed decisions is not easily accomplished because of the limited information available prenatally. Only 1/3 of all cases of T13 are diagnosed prenatally, which means it cannot be expected that most cases will be detected early in pregnancy, that the parents will decide to terminate the pregnancy, and that difficulties will be avoided.

Background: Patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) are considered as high risk in terms of secondary cardiovascular prevention. However, obviously the risk is not homogenous across the whole group. Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) has been recently related to adverse outcomes in patients with atherosclerosis.

Spontaneous miscarriages are the most frequent complications of pregnancy and, in at least half of cases, are caused by chromosomal abnormalities, mainly aneuploidies. We present the preliminary results of the implementation of multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) in the detection of chromosomal aberrations in the tissue derived from first-trimester miscarriage and evaluate the limitations and requirements of the method. We studied 181 MLPA analyses with subtelomeric and subcentromeric probe kits for all chromosomes (SALSA P070 and SALSA P181) performed on the first-trimester spontaneous miscarriage products in our Department of Genetics between September 2012 and December 2014.

Introductions: According to clinical observations primary neoplastic lesions in the head and neck are often complicated by infection. The incidence of postoperative complications of cancer lesions of the head and neck, oral cavity, upper airways or larynx is from 19% up to 47% cases but in extensive and long-term operations can reach 80%.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated results of microbiological investigations of 312 clinical specimens collected from patients from Clinical Head and Neck Cancers of On- cology Center in Warsaw in the years 2008 -2012.

In this paper droplet evaporative crystallization of salicylic acid (SA) and acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) crystals on different surfaces, such as glass, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and paraffin was studied. The obtained crystals were analyzed using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) technique. In order to better understand the effect of the surface on evaporative crystallization, crystals deposited on glass were scraped off.

This review is inspired by a case of two pregnancies of the same patient complicated by HELLP syndrome, which suggests that there is a predisposition for the occurrence of preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome in early pregnancy. HELLP syndrome, uncommon below the 20th week and rarer still in two consecutive pregnancies, appeared in two pregnancies of the same woman. The aim of our work is to try to understand the cause of heterogeneity of HELLP syndrome and help find a way of prolonging such pregnancies.

Prosthodontic treatment, especially restorations of fractured teeth in small animals, has been the subject of many veterinary dental analyses in relation to techniques of endodontic treatment, preparation and cementation, as well as the general principles of prosthodontic treatment. The purpose of this paper is to present a previously undescribed method of all-in-one crown and root prosthetic restoration of fractured teeth in large dogs, together with a thorough analysis of the drawbacks, which may help veterinary dentists to use an evidence-based approach when deciding on the type of treatment for their patients with tooth fractures.

Preterm births are still a major problem in obstetrics. It is estimated that preterm births occur in about 12% of all pregnancies. Due to advances in medical technology and better care of fetuses and premature babies, the preterm mortality rate has been falling (as recently as 1995 the survival rate in the US for premature infants born at 34 weeks amounted to only a fraction of the corresponding rate for those born after 37 weeks).

Unlabelled: Traditionally, women gave birth surrounded by other, experienced women. Modern women not only require continuous support during labor, but they also want to have a part in decision-taking. That is why some of them, regardless of how much or how little medical knowledge they have, want to decide about the way of birth on their own.

Unlabelled: As hypertension occurs very commonly in contemporary population, its complications and costs of treatment are one of the most important health and social issues. Non-compliance of the patients with respect to the intake of medicines and not-obeying medical instructions on healthy life style are said to be an important cause of hypertension treatment failures. Socioeconomic status of life has also a strong impact on the regularity of medicine intake.

Copper(II) ions react rapidly with sulfur from thiol groups, forming two distinct, intensely absorbing, short-lived intermediates, which decompose in a subsequent redox reaction to produce reduced copper and disulfides. In this study we report the results of a mechanistic study on the reaction between mercaptosuccinic acid, HO(2)CCH(2)CH(SH)CO(2)H, and Cu(2+)(aq) and [Cu(tren)H(2)O](2+), tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine. Spectroscopic and kinetic data indicate that in the presence of an excess of thiol, at least two distinct complexes are formed, with very different decomposition rate constants and an absorption maximum at 346 nm.

Cysteine peptidases and their endogenous inhibitors (CPI) have been shown to be involved in tumor progression and metastasis. Since their activity has been found to be changed in tumor tissue and/or body fluids of cancer patients, the determination of the peptidase/inhibitor levels is considered as a procedure of diagnostic value. Determination of cathepsin B, its precursor and inhibitor activity in homogenates of tumors and control breast tissue samples of patients with invasive ductal and lobular breast carcinoma and with benign breast disease (BBD) was performed using fluorometric assay.
