Urinary infections related to the presence of bacterial biofilm on catheters are responsible for loss of patients' health and, due to their high frequency of occurrence, generate a significant economic burden for hospitals. is a pathogen frequently isolated from this type of infection. In this study, using a cohesive set of techniques performed under stationary and flow conditions, we assessed the ability of 120 strains to form biofilm on various surfaces, including catheters, and evaluated the usefulness of clinically applied and experimental compounds to remove biofilm.

Gas-solid interfaces enable a multitude of industrial processes, including heterogeneous catalysis; however, there are few methods available for studying the structure of this interface under operating conditions. Here, we present a new sample environment for interrogating materials under gas-flow conditions using time-of-flight neutron scattering under both constant and pulse probe gas flow. Outlined are descriptions of the gas flow cell and a commissioning example using the adsorption of N by Ca-exchanged zeolite-X (NaCaAlSiO,x ≈ 38).

Herein, we detail how the morphology of a nanomaterial affects its environmental lifetime in aquatic ecosystems. In particular, we focus on the cube and particle nanostructures of Ag and age them in various aquatic mediums including synthetic hard water, pond water, and seawater. Our results show that in the synthetic hard water and pond water cases, there was little difference in the rate of morphological changes as determined by UV-vis spectroscopy.

In recent years, assay levels of natriuretic peptides are used in everyday clinical practice. The most commonly used is the assay the concentration of NT-proBNP in conjunction with the longest half-life (120 minutes) and its stability. According to the guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology determination of NT-proBNP were used in the diagnosis of acute and chronic heart failure, risk stratification in acute coronary syndromes, pulmonary embolism and in assessing the overall risk of cardiovascular patients prior to surgery.

Aim: The aim of this study was to present one center experience in applying the SNOLL technique to patients with suspected occult breast lesions.

Background: In the last years, the widespread use of mammographic screening programs resulted in an increasing number of women with nonpalpable suspicious breast lesions requiring further examination. In our laboratories, we have produced ZnS(Ag)/6Li sol-gel scintillation materials which produce an excellent light output with an alpha radiation (compared to commercial high temperature lithiated glass; KG-2 and a plastic scintillator; BC-400). However, when tested with a neutron radiation, the opacity of the ZnS(Ag)/6Li sol-gel scintillation materials, which were composed of a homogeneous micron-sized ZnS(Ag), prevented a clear neutron energy peak formation, thus making it difficult to set a threshold for neutron-gamma discrimination. In an effort to increase the transparency of the scintillation materials and to develop new technologies to fabricate sulfide-based scintillation materials for neutron detection, we turned to the methods of a chemical bath deposition (CBD) and a nano-particle synthesis for possible solutions.

Phosphinic tripeptide analogues Gly-Xaapsi[P(O)(OH)CH(2)]-Gly have been developed as inhibitors of cathepsin C (DPP I), a lysosomal, papain-like cysteine protease. The target compounds were synthesised by addition of methyl acrylate to the appropriate phosphinic acids followed by the N-terminus elongation using mixed anhydride procedure. The latter step has been demonstrated to be a suitable method for N-terminal extension of the phosphinic pseudopeptide analogues without requirement of hydroxyphosphinyl protection.
