The Effect of Nonthermal Pretreatment on the Drying Kinetics and Quality of Black Garlic.

Black garlic is obtained from regular garlic ( L.) through the aging process and consequently gains many health-promoting properties, including antidiabetic and antioxidant. However, the material is still prone to microbiological deterioration and requires a long time to dry due to its properties.

Removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) Ions from Groundwater by Nonthermal Plasma.

The removal of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions from aqueous solutions by means of nonthermal plasma with a dielectric barrier discharge is investigated. Aqueous solutions with metal ion concentrations from 10 to 100 mg/dm in spring water were used. In the first stage, the optimization of the solution flow rate, generator modulation frequency and duty cycle was made in terms of the removal efficiency of the considered metals.

is a bacterium which people have been in contact with for thousands of years. Its presence often leads to severe disorders of the respiratory and circulatory systems. The authors of this article present a prototype of a textronic sensor enabling the detection of this bacterium.

Effect of pulsed electric field treatment on shelf life and nutritional value of apple juice.

The aim of this study was to assess shelf life and nutritional value of apple juice, including the content of bioactive compounds, after pulsed electric field (PEF) treatment, taking into account different number of cycles: 4, 6, 8 (total 200, 300, and 400 pulses, respectively). Determination of vitamin C and polyphenols concentration, antioxidant activity as well as microbiological analysis were conducted immediately after PEF process and after 24, 48 and 72 h of storage. The results showed that PEF did not affect the content of bioactive compounds.

Determining eyeball surface area directly exposed to the effects of external factors.

This article discusses determining the surface area of eyeballs of men and women exposed to the direct effects of external factors in the working environment. For one eye, the mean surface is 172-182 mm(2). The determined surface area can be used in formulas for calculating the exposure of eyeballs to harmful chemical substances in workplace air.

Determination of zearalenone and its metabolites in endometrial cancer by coupled separation techniques.

This study presents a selective method of isolation of zearalenone (ZON) and its metabolite, α-zearalenol (α-ZOL), in neoplastically changed human tissue by accelerated solvent and ultrasonic extractions using a mixture of acetonitrile/water (84/16% v/v) as the extraction solvent. Extraction effectiveness was determined through the selection of parameters (composition of the solvent mixture, temperature, pressure, number of cycles) with tissue contamination at the level of nanograms per gram. The produced acetonitrile/water extracts were purified, and analytes were enriched in columns packed with homemade molecularly imprinted polymers.
