The aim of the work was to analyze the influence of process parameters of high shear granulation on the process yield and on the morphology of granules on the basis of dynamic image analysis. The amount of added granulation liquid had a significant effect on all monitored granulometric parameters and caused significant changes in the yield of the process. In regard of the shape, the most spherical granules with the smoothest surface were formed at a liquid to solid ratio of ≈1.

Here, a semi-theoretical droplet-based evaporation rate model was developed and incorporated into moisture mass-enthalpy balances to simulate the temporal evolution of bed moisture-temperature. Experimental data from a GPCG30 unit were used to fit the model parameters.

Even if the particle size distribution (PSD) obtained in a crystallization step can be controlled by the crystal growth kinetics and hydrodynamic conditions, further fluid-solid separation steps such as filtration, filter washing, drying, and subsequent solids handling can often lead to uncontrolled changes in the PSD due to breakage. In this contribution we present a combined computational and experimental methodology for determining the breakage kernel and the daughter distribution functions of needle-shaped crystals, and for population balance modeling of their breakage.

The fractional surface coverage of the particle as a function of the droplet size, equilibrium contact angle, and the particle surface roughness amplitude and correlation length has been systematically investigated. Droplet size and contact angle were found to generally have a stronger effect on surface coverage than particle surface roughness.
