Extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of macromolecules which has two forms - perineuronal nets (PNNs) and a diffuse ECM (dECM) - both influence brain development, synapse formation, neuroplasticity, CNS injury and progression of neurodegenerative diseases. ECM remodeling can influence extrasynaptic transmission, mediated by diffusion of neuroactive substances in the extracellular space (ECS). In this study we analyzed how disrupted PNNs and dECM influence brain diffusibility.

Transient destabilization of interhemispheric functional connectivity induced by spreading depolarization.

Cortical spreading depolarization (CSD), a slowly propagating wave of transient cellular depolarization, is a reliable cortical response to various brain insults (stroke, trauma, seizures) and underlying mechanism of migraine aura. Little is known about CSD effects on brain network activity. Using undirected (mutual information, MI) and directed (transfer entropy, TE) measures, we studied the dynamics of cross-hemispheric connectivity associated with the development of unilateral CSD in freely behaving rats and the involvement of inhibitory transmission in mechanisms of the coupling changes.

[PET/CT MOLECULAR CELL IMAGING OF ACUTE PYELONEPHRITIS IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF FEVER OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN].

In addition to tumor imaging, advanced high-tech PET/CT imaging is increasingly used to elucidate the underlying causes of fever of unknown origin caused by various inflammatory processes, including pyelonephritis. Two clinical cases of whole-body PET/CT with 18F-FDG glucose, which allowed to visualize the molecular and cellular features of acute pyelonephritis as the cause of fever of unknown origin, are presented in the article. The scientifically based mechanisms of this process and the reliability of the results are discussed.

The Effect of Chronic Overcrowding on Social Behavior and Expression of Neuroinflammation-Associated Genes in Rats.

The effect of chronic overcrowding on the social behavior of adult male Wistar rats was studied. From postnatal day 30 (P30) to P180, the rats lived under standard (STND) or overcrowded (CRWD) conditions. Starting from P100, rat behavior was studied in the social preference and tube dominance tests, and aggressive behavior was investigated in the resident-intruder test.

Cross-Effects in Folding and Phase Transitions of hnRNP A1 and C9Orf72 RNA G4 In Vitro.

Abnormal intracellular phase transitions in mutant hnRNP A1 may underlie the development of several neurodegenerative diseases. The risk of these diseases increases upon repeat expansion and the accumulation of the corresponding G-quadruplex (G4)-forming RNA, but the link between this RNA and the disruption of hnRNP A1 homeostasis has not been fully explored so far. Our aim was to clarify the mutual effects of hnRNP A1 and C9Orf72 G4 in vitro.

Trust in government moderates the association between fear of COVID-19 as well as empathic concern and preventive behaviour.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, behavioural scientists aimed to illuminate reasons why people comply with (or not) large-scale cooperative activities. Here we investigated the motives that underlie support for COVID-19 preventive behaviours in a sample of 12,758 individuals from 34 countries. We hypothesized that the associations of empathic prosocial concern and fear of disease with support towards preventive COVID-19 behaviours would be moderated by trust in the government.

GluN2B on Adult-Born Granule Cells Modulates (R,S)-Ketamine's Rapid-Acting Effects in Mice.

Background: Standard antidepressant treatments often take weeks to reach efficacy and are ineffective for many patients. (R,S)-ketamine, an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor antagonist, has been shown to be a rapid-acting antidepressant and to decrease depressive symptoms within hours of administration. While previous studies have shown the importance of the GluN2B subunit of the NMDA receptor on interneurons in the medial prefrontal cortex, no study to our knowledge has investigated the influence of GluN2B-expressing adult-born granule cells.

Chronic exercise effects on overall depression severity and distinct depressive symptoms in older adults: A protocol of a systematic and meta-analytic review.

Introduction: There is high evidence that chronic exercise benefits overall depression severity in older adults. However, late-life depression is characterized by considerable heterogeneity in clinical manifestation emphasizing the need for more individualized exercise intervention programs. Therefore, the objective of the proposed review is to investigate the effects of chronic exercise on overall depression severity and on different symptoms of depression in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including older adults with a mean age of at least 60 years, and by considering the moderating effects of intervention characteristics and individual characteristics.

Different vulnerability of fast and slow cortical oscillations to suppressive effect of spreading depolarization: state-dependent features potentially relevant to pathogenesis of migraine aura.

Background: Spreading depolarization (SD), underlying mechanism of migraine aura and potential activator of pain pathways, is known to elicit transient local silencing cortical activity. Sweeping across the cortex, the electrocorticographic depression is supposed to underlie spreading negative symptoms of migraine aura. Main information about the suppressive effect of SD on cortical oscillations was obtained in anesthetized animals while ictal recordings in conscious patients failed to detect EEG depression during migraine aura.

Amide-Containing Bottlebrushes via Continuous-Flow Photoiniferter Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization: Micellization Behavior.

Herein, a series of ternary amphiphilic amide-containing bottlebrushes were synthesized by photoiniferter (PI-RAFT) polymerization of macromonomers in continuous-flow mode using trithiocarbonate as a chain transfer agent. Visible light-mediated polymerization of macromonomers under mild conditions enabled the preparation of thermoresponsive copolymers with low dispersity and high yields in a very short time, which is not typical for the classical reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer process. Methoxy oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate and alkoxy(C-C) oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate were used as the basic monomers providing amphiphilic and thermoresponsive properties.

The article discusses results of communication effects of various information actors on elderly citizen stimulating healthy life-style. The purpose of the study was to establish characteristics of perception by elderly Russians communication effects targeting formation and maintenance of healthy life-style, to determine degree of significance of communication channels by which such measures can provide high degree of individual motivation. The contradiction was established.

The Coronavirus Anxiety Scale: Cross-national measurement invariance and convergent validity evidence.

Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS) is a widely used measure that captures somatic symptoms of coronavirus-related anxiety. In a large-scale collaboration spanning 60 countries ( = 21,513), we examined the CAS's measurement invariance and assessed the convergent validity of CAS scores in relation to the fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19S) and the satisfaction with life (SWLS-3) scales. We utilized both conventional exact invariance tests and alignment procedures, with results revealing that the single-factor model fit the data well in almost all countries.

On the Benefits of Listen before Talk Scheme for NB-Fi Networks.

NB-Fi (Narrow Band Fidelity) is a promising protocol for low-power wide-area networks. NB-Fi networks use license-exempt Industrial, Scientific, and Medical (ISM) bands and, thus, NB-Fi devices can work in two modes: with and without Listen Before Talk (LBT). This paper compares these modes with different implementations of LBT in terms of packet loss rate (PLR), delay, energy consumption, and throughput.

Unwinding the SARS-CoV-2 Ribosomal Frameshifting Pseudoknot with LNA and G-Clamp-Modified Phosphorothioate Oligonucleotides Inhibits Viral Replication.

Ribosomal frameshifting (RFS) at the slippery site of SARS-CoV-2 RNA is essential for the biosynthesis of the viral replication machinery. It requires the formation of a pseudoknot (PK) structure near the slippery site and can be inhibited by PK-disrupting oligonucleotide-based antivirals. We obtained and compared three types of such antiviral candidates, namely locked nucleic acids (LNA), LNA-DNA gapmers, and G-clamp-containing phosphorothioates (CPSs) complementary to PK stems.

Exposure to war, war nightmares, insomnia, and war-related posttraumatic stress disorder: A network analysis among university students during the war in Ukraine.

Introduction: Little is known about the prevalence and associations between war-related variables among Ukrainians during the Russian invasion. The present study assesses the prevalence and associations between exposure to war (EW), nightmares of war (NW), insomnia, and war-related post-traumatic stress disorder (WPTSD) among university students from Ukraine.

Methods: During the war, an online cross-sectional study was performed among university students (N = 1072) from western Ukraine.

Individual and contextual predictors of young Ukrainian adults' subjective well-being during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is accompanied by horrific losses among civilians. This study investigates various individual (hope, optimism, resilience, post-traumatic growth, and coping strategies) and contextual predictors (experience of life under occupation, actively hostile home environment, and frequent moves) of subjective well-being among the youth living in Ukraine. A total sample of 593 students from several universities participated in the study using surveys that contained questions about sociodemographic characteristics, life satisfaction, hope, optimism, personal post-traumatic growth, resilience, and coping strategies.

Mental Health and well-being During the COVID-19 Pandemic and After the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

The study compared the mental health of university students during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. A repeated online cross-sectional study was performed twice among university students in Ukraine: in November 2020 (Pre-war sample, n = 752) and September-October 2022 (During-war sample, n = 862). The survey measured life satisfaction (SWLS), perceived stress (PSS-10), anxiety (GAD-7), and depression (PHQ-9).

Nature-based solutions can help reduce the impact of natural hazards: A global analysis of NBS case studies.

The knowledge derived from successful case studies can act as a driver for the implementation and upscaling of nature-based solutions (NBS). This work reviewed 547 case studies to gain an overview of NBS practices and their role in reducing the adverse impact of natural hazards and climate change. The majority (60 %) of case studies are situated in Europe compared with the rest of the world where they are poorly represented.

Myokines as mediators of exercise-induced cognitive changes in older adults: protocol for a comprehensive living systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: The world's population is aging, but life expectancy has risen more than healthy life expectancy (HALE). With respect to brain and cognition, the prevalence of neurodegenerative disorders increases with age, affecting health and quality of life, and imposing significant healthcare costs. Although the effects of physical exercise on cognition in advanced age have been widely explored, in-depth fundamental knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of the exercise-induced cognitive improvements is lacking.

[Physiology of autonomic regulation of kidney and bladder functions and its clinical significance].

The results of a search in PubMed and Elibraru.ru databases using the keywords "autonomic regulation", "kidney function", "bladder function", "ECG monitoring", "PET/CT of the brain" are presented in the review. A regulation of bladder functions, control of blood pressure, heart rate and specialized functions of the nephron are discussed, which are in close relationship with the stem and cortical centers of the brain.
