Purpose: Ovarian clear-cell carcinomas (OCCC) are known to be possibly resistant to platinum-based chemotherapy and to have a poorer prognosis with respect to other subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). This study was undertaken to compare response and survival to platinum-based chemotherapy between patients with advanced stage III and IV OCCC and serous EOC (sEOC).
Patients And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed in patients with advanced stage of OCCC treated with first-line platinum-based chemotherapy in the context of several study protocols of the Hellenic Cooperative Oncology Group (HeCOG) between 1/2/1987 and 31/10/2003.
The aim of the study was to investigate angiogenesis in patients with advanced-stage ovarian carcinoma. We used paraffin-embedded tumor tissues from 33 patients diagnosed with FIGO III ovarian cancer who had optimal surgery and received platinum-based chemotherapy. The tissue expression of CD34, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) was assessed immunohistochemically.

The clinical course, management, and outcome of squamous lung cancer in the elderly have not been thoroughly studied to date.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 236 squamous cell lung cancer patients diagnosed in two reference hospitals and compared key epidemiological, clinical, and management features between elderly (>70 years) and younger patients.
Background: Adjustment for stage at diagnosis markedly reduces USA versus European colorectal cancer survival differences and a screening bias was therefore suspected. Moreover, little is known about colorectal cancer screening habits in European primary care and the history of guidelines implementation. The purpose of the study was to index the overall colorectal cancer screening attitudes of European physicians involved in primary care activities.

MT expression in human tumors has been linked to resistance to anticancer drugs and differentiation and progression in some types of tumors. This study examined the immunohistochemical expression of MTs in benign, borderline and malignant tumors of ovarian surface epithelium and the possible correlations with clinicopathological parameters and survival.

We conducted a review of the available literature concerning the use of adjuvant chemotherapy, palliative chemotherapy and surgery in elderly patients with colorectal cancer, using data from meta-analyses, non-systematic reviews and individual trials. All report similar survival benefits with adjuvant and palliative chemotherapy in elderly patients in comparison with younger age groups.

We retrospectively analysed clinicopathologic characteristics of 500 women with metastatic breast cancer and liver deposits upon administration of first-line chemotherapy in the 90s. We sought to examine the epidemiology, clinical course, outcome and prognostic factors of this cohort with the hope to identify changing patterns, facilitate cost-effective follow-up and rationalize therapy of these patients.

We are presenting a pooled analysis of prognostic factors from two randomized studies of adjuvant treatment conducted by the Hellenic Cooperative Oncology Group.
Patients And Methods: Patients with stage II or III colon (n = 279) or rectal (n = 220) cancer were included in this analysis.
Background: The purpose was to study proteolysis-related molecules, matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1), in carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP).
Methods: Paraffin-embedded tumor material from 75 patients diagnosed with CUP was used. Tumor histologies were adenocarcinoma (77%), undifferentiated carcinoma (19%), and squamous cell carcinoma (4%) and patients were categorized into favorable (62%) and unfavorable (38%) subsets.
Purpose: To identify the incidence of prostate cancer associated-systemic inflammatory syndrome (SIS), and to characterize further this entity, we searched our database as well as the medical literature.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed all patients with prostate cancer admitted to the Department of Medical Oncology of the Ioannina University Hospital during the last 3 years. Systematic review of peer-reviewed medical literature was further performed at 3 major libraries (i.
The primary objective of this phase II study was to access the complete response (CR) rate to a new innovative induction regimen in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer (LA-HNC). From October 2000 until October 2003 a total of 38 eligible patients (33 men and 5 women) entered the study. The large majority of them presented with a performance status of 0-1 and with clinical stage IV disease.

Background: A phase II study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of the combination of gemcitabine (GEM) and pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) in patients with platinum- and/or taxane-resistant/refractory advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC).
Patients And Methods: Patients (pts), who had been treated with platinum or paclitaxel and met the criteria of resistant/refractory AEOC, received GEM 650 mg/m2 days 1 and 8 and PLD 25 mg/m2 day 1 every 4 weeks up to a total of 6 cycles, unless disease progression or adverse effects prohibited further therapy.
Results: Thirty-seven patients entered the study.
Therapeutic options for metastatic insular thyroid carcinoma (ITC) are very limited. We present the case of a 39-year-old woman with refractory metastatic ITC who responded to oxaliplatin plus irinotecan chemotherapy. She was initially diagnosed with a locally advanced and metastatic to lung ITC and underwent near-total thyroidectomy.

The two platinum derivatives have been previously combined as they are not totally cross-resistant and as they share no overlapping toxicities.
Patients And Methods: Patients with AOC, after the initial cytoreductive surgery were randomized to either 6 courses of paclitaxel at 175 mg/m2 as 3 h infusion plus Carboplatin at 7 AUC (Arm A) or Paclitaxel at the same dose plus Carboplatin again at 7 AUC for cycles 1,3,5, while for cycles 2,4,6 Cisplatin at 75 mg/m2 substituted for Carboplatin (Arm B).
The diagnosis of a brain metastasis is usually made during the routine follow up examinations of patients with known cancer, who are under the care of oncology departments. The involvement of the neurosurgeon depends on the philosophy and referral patterns of each oncology group. Patients with brain metastases of unknown primary (BMUP) are much more likely to seek the help of a neurosurgeon or a neurologist before contacting an oncologist, because the presenting clinical features originate from the brain.
