Economic burden of breast cancer in India, 2000-2021 and forecast to 2030.

Background Breast cancer represents a significant public health concern in India, accounting for 28% of all cancer diagnoses and imposing a substantial economic burden. This study introduces a novel approach to forecasting the number of breast cancer cases (based on prevalence rates) and estimating the associated economic impact in India using the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model. Methods Data on the prevalence of breast cancer in India from 2000 to 2021 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database.

Optimizing medication therapy in elderly patients: The impact of medication review using STOPP and START criteria version 2.

Higher prevalence of inappropriate medication use among cancer patients increases risk of drug-related problems(DRP) like drug-drug interactions, ADR, and non-adherence. Potentially inappropriate medication (PIM) and Potential Prescription Omission (PPO) were identified using Screening Tool of Older Person's Prescriptions (STOPP) and Screening Tool to Alert Doctors to the Right Treatment (START) criteria. The study objective was to optimize prescriptions for the elderly by analyzing the impact of medication review.

Health technology assessment for digital health Technologies in India: a framework for action.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to understand the path for establishing digital health technologies-health technology assessment (DHT-HTA) in India.

Methods: A rapid review of HTA and DHT frameworks on PubMed (MEDLINE) and Google Scholar was conducted to identify DHT-HTA guidelines, and HTA processes in India. MS-Excel template was created with key domains for assessing DHT in resource-constrained settings based on studies and reports identified.

Exceptional long term response to crizotinib in ROS 1-postive advanced non small cell lung cancer.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for the majority of lung cancer cases worldwide, with a significant proportion of patients harbouring actionable oncogenic alterations. Among these alterations, the ROS1 rearrangement represents a distinct subset with therapeutic implications. Here, we present the case of a 52-year-old man diagnosed with advanced NSCLC harbouring the ROS1 fusion gene.

Prevalence and types of cancer in older Indians: A multicentric observational study across 17 institutions in India.

The global demographic and epidemiological transition have led to a rapidly increasing burden of cancer, particularly among older adults. There are scant data on the prevalence and demographic pattern of cancer in older Indian persons. This was a multicentric observational study conducted between January 2019 and December 2020.

Molecular pathogenesis of microsatellite instability-high early-stage colorectal adenocarcinoma in India.

Objectives: The prevalence of microsatellite instability (MSI) subtype among all colon cancers in India is about 30 %, approximately two times more than that of western population suggesting different molecular pathogeneses.

Methods: A analysis-based Pan cancer differential expression (DE) profile was determined in a primary cohort of early-stage CRC (tumor=10, normal=7), and correlated against MSI status. Using RT-PCR, tumor-specific genes were validated in another cohort of MSI-high CRC (n=15).

Diffuse pleural metastasis from atypical meningioma.

Meningioma is the most common benign primary brain tumour and does not usually metastasise. We report the case of a 69-year-old male patient with a history of meningioma who presented respiratory symptoms. He was found to have diffuse pleural metastasis from meningioma, which occurred 10 years after surgical management of recurrent meningioma.

Assessment of potential drug-drug interactions in hospitalized cancer patients.

Introduction: Drug-drug interactions (DDIs) pose a significant threat to patients with cancer, resulting in several adverse events in an oncology setting. Our study aims to identify potential DDIs in inpatient oncology wards, assess their severity, and provide recommendations to avoid these interactions.

Materials And Methods: This prospective study was conducted in 79 hospitalized cancer patients over a period of 9 months (from August 2021 to May 2022) at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi receiving at least two oncological or non-oncological drugs for 5 days.

Integrative management of insomnia during cancer chemotherapy: A case report.

Introduction: Insomnia is common among cancer patients, affecting about 50% undergoing cancer treatment. Insomnia can be due to various reasons, such as physical-pain, psychological-distress and medication side-effects. Insomnia has significant impact on quality of life of cancer patients.

Background: Malignant transformation in endometriosis was first described by Sampson in 1925. There is now sufficient evidence of its association specifically with endometrioid (EOC) and clear cell ovarian cancer (CCOC). Whether endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (EAOC) is a distinct clinicopathological entity from non-endometriosis-associated ovarian cancer (NEAOC) remains uncertain.

Deciphering the role of transforming growth factor-beta 1 as a diagnostic-prognostic-therapeutic candidate against hepatocellular carcinoma.

Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine that performs a dual role as a tumor suppressor and tumor promoter during cancer progression. Among different ligands of the TGF-β family, TGF-β1 modulates most of its biological outcomes. Despite the abundant expression of TGF-β1 in the liver, steatosis to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression triggers elevated TGF-β1 levels, contributing to poor prognosis and survival.

Revisiting the outstanding questions in cancer nanomedicine with a future outlook.

The field of cancer nanomedicine has been fueled by the expectation of mitigating the inefficiencies and life-threatening side effects of conventional chemotherapy. Nanomedicine proposes to utilize the unique nanoscale properties of nanoparticles to address the most pressing questions in cancer treatment and diagnosis. The approval of nano-based products in the 1990s inspired scientific explorations in this direction.

Flupirtine in the Management of Taxane-induced Pain in Cancer Patients.

Objectives: Paclitaxel and docetaxel are two commonly used chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment of various types of cancers. However, debilitating taxane-induced arthralgia and myalgia are among the most common adverse reactions associated with taxanes, which has greatly influenced medical practitioners. Most of the mild and moderate analgesics were found to be less effective in the management of taxane induced pain.

The COVID-19 pandemic has strained the healthcare system worldwide. Our study aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and surgical care of patients with breast cancer in Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. This is a single-centre retrospective observational cohort study conducted in a tertiary care institution intended to analyse the management of patients with breast cancer before and after the pandemic outbreak.

The global incidence of lung cancer among women is rising. By 2030, lung cancer in women is expected to increase by 43%. The factors thought to predispose women to lung cancer are exposure second hand smoke, air pollution and biofuels used for cooking.

The use of pharmacotherapy for improving healthcare in society is increasing. A vast majority of patients have either received subtherapeutic treatment (which could result from low pharmacokinetic) or experienced adverse effects due to the toxic levels of the drug. The medicines used to treat chronic conditions, such as epilepsy; cardiovascular diseases; and oncological, neurological, and psychiatric disorders, require routine monitoring.

Belzutifan: A Narrative Drug Review.

Von Hippel-Lindau disease is an autosomal dominant disorder characterised by renal cell carcinomas, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours, central nervous system hemangioblastomas, retinoblastomas, and tumours of the reproductive tract. This disease results from loss of function mutations in the tumour suppressor gene known as the Von Hippel-Lindau gene, located on chromosome 3. Loss of function mutation in the Von Hippel-Lindau gene results in the accumulation of a protein known as a hypoxia-inducible factor, which promotes cellular proliferation and angiogenesis, leading to cancer.

Recurrent extramedullary plasmacytomas without multiple myeloma: A case report with review of the literature.

Background: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon presentation and usually occurs in conjunction with multiple myeloma (MM). An EMP without developing MM at any point is an extremely rare presentation, and only seven such cases have been reported in the literature to date.

Presentation Of Case: We present a case of EMP, who presented with multiple recurrent lesions in rare sites like nasal cavity, testis and skin without the involvement of bone marrow at any point of disease course.

Discovery of Anticancer Hybrid Molecules by Supervised Machine Learning Models and Validation in Drug Resistant Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Cells.

The concept of hybrid drugs for targeting multiple aberrant pathways of cancer, by combining the key pharmacophores of clinically approved single-targeted drugs, has emerged as a promising approach for overcoming drug-resistance. Here, we report the design of unique hybrid molecules by combining the two pharmacophores of clinically approved BCR-ABL inhibitor (ponatinib) and HDAC inhibitor (vorinostat) and results of studies in drug-resistant CML cells. Robust 2D-QSAR and 3D-pharmacophore machine learning supervised models were developed for virtual screening of the hybrid molecules based on their predicted BCR-ABL and HDAC inhibitory activity.

Case series of concurrent occurrence of sarcoidosis and breast cancer - A diagnostic dilemma.

The prevalence of microsatellite instability and deoxyribonucleic acid mismatch repair deficiency in colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRC) cases is higher in India compared to western populations. No major study on the molecular pathogenesis is currently available in the Indian population. We conducted a pilot study to explore the differences in molecular pathogenesis of microsatellite stable (MSS) and microsatellite unstable CRC from a tertiary care centre in Kerala, South India.
