Evaluation of service user-led workshops in children's palliative care education.

Children's nurses report feeling unprepared when caring for children with life-limiting conditions and their families, while the value of including service users in the provision of nursing education is increasingly recognised. This small-scale service evaluation examined the effect on learning of service user-led workshops as part of a module for final-year children's nursing students and post-registration children's nurses. The workshops focused on the experience of children's palliative care and child bereavement from the parents' perspective.

Bayesian Self-Optimization for Telescoped Continuous Flow Synthesis.

The optimization of multistep chemical syntheses is critical for the rapid development of new pharmaceuticals. However, concatenating individually optimized reactions can lead to inefficient multistep syntheses, owing to chemical interdependencies between the steps. Herein, we develop an automated continuous flow platform for the simultaneous optimization of telescoped reactions.

The continuous flow synthesis of butane-2,3-diacetal protected building blocks using microreactors.

The continuous flow synthesis of butane-2,3-diacetal protected derivatives has been achieved using commercially available flow chemistry microreactors in concert with solid supported reagents and scavengers to provide in-line purification systems. The BDA protected products are all obtained in superior yield to the corresponding batch processes.

Synthesis of acetal protected building blocks using flow chemistry with flow I.R. analysis: preparation of butane-2,3-diacetal tartrates.

The syntheses of butane-2,3-diacetal protected tartrate derivatives are described using continuous flow processing techniques with in-line purification and I.R. analytical protocols.

Total synthesis of rapamycin.

For over 30 years, rapamycin has generated a sustained and intense interest from the scientific community as a result of its exceptional pharmacological properties and challenging structural features. In addition to its well known therapeutic value as a potent immunosuppressive agent, rapamycin and its derivatives have recently gained prominence for the treatment of a wide variety of other human malignancies. Herein we disclose full details of our extensive investigation into the synthesis of rapamycin that culminated in a new and convergent preparation featuring a macro-etherification/catechol-templating strategy for construction of the macrocyclic core of this natural product.

Differential sensitivity of T lymphocytes and hematopoietic precursor cells to photochemotherapy with 8-methoxypsoralen and ultraviolet A light.

The combination of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) and long wave ultraviolet radiation (UV-A) has immunomodulatory effects and might abolish both graft-vs-host and host-vs-graft reactions after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In the present study, we have confirmed the sensitivity of T lymphocytes to 8-MOP treatment plus UV-A exposure as evidenced by the abrogation of the alloreactivity in mixed lymphocyte cultures as well as the inhibition of the response to phytohemagglutinin A. However, the clonogenic capacity of the bone marrow hematopoietic progenitors was inhibited with UV-A doses lower than the doses needed to inhibit T-lymphocytes alloreactivity.

Synthesis and transcription studies on 5'-triphosphates derived from 2'-C-branched-uridines: 2'-homouridine-5'-triphosphate is a substrate for T7 RNA polymerase.

The 5'-triphosphates of 2'-hydroxymethyluridine (2'-homouridine) and 2'-hydroxyethyluridine were prepared from the corresponding acetyl-protected nucleosides by initial phosphitylation with 2-chloro-5,6-benzo-1,2,3-dioxaphosphorin-4-one. 2'-Acetamidouridine 5'-triphosphate was prepared in an analogous fashion from uridine 2'-C-, 3'-O-gamma-butyrolactone, in which the 3'-hydroxyl group is internally protected as the lactone. Subsequent treatment with ammonia gave the required acetamido triphosphate.

Effects of adding potassium iodate to milk before UHT treatment. I. Reduction in the amount of deposit on the heated surfaces.

Additions of potassium iodate to milk at 0.05 and 0.1 mM (10 and 20 ppm) before UHT treatment markedly reduced the rate at which pressure built up during processing.
