The occurrence of cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) from industrial emissions were determined in the muscle and liver of cattle from agricultural farms near an industrial plant in Eastern Slovakia. In this study cows (n = 25) were slaughtered and the concentrations of Cd, Ni, Pb were analyzed with a the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Levels reaching the highest permissible hygiene limits for toxic metals Cd, Pb and Ni were determined in 50 samples.

The present study investigated the effect of the probiotic strain Enterococcus faecium DSM 7134 (2 x 10(7) cfu per g of feed) (probiotic group), natural humic substances (7g x kg(-1) feed) (HS group), and the combination of both (probiotic + HS group) on the performance, serum biochemistry, and biological activity of leucocytes of broiler chickens. Average body weight of chickens in different phases as well as throughout the observation period under different treatments did not differ significantly. Two strains of lactobacilli (Lactobacillus acidophilus T-135 and Lactobacillus plantarum 4/97) were selected in order to study their inhibitory properties against frequent udder pathogens (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus uberis, Salmonella enteritidis and Bacillus pumilus), their production of organic acids as well as their ability to survive on the teat skin, the teat duct mucosa and in a lipoid emulsion. Both strains inhibited the tested pathogenic microbes and survived on the investigated surfaces and in an emulsion for more than 6 hours and 11 days, respectively.
