Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the vocal behavior of lesser galagos in zoos, addressing the lack of knowledge due to their nocturnal exhibit settings.
  • Researchers conducted a 10-day acoustic monitoring of seven groups of Galago senegalensis and G. moholi across four zoos, analyzing four distinct vocalization types, including a specific advertisement call.
  • Findings revealed both qualitative and quantitative differences in vocal behaviors, with G. senegalensis being most vocal at the start and end of their activity period, while one G. moholi group exhibited an unexpected opposite pattern.

The European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) emits alarm calls that warn conspecifics of potential danger. Although it has been observed that inexperienced juveniles of this species emit alarm calls that sound similar to those of adults, studies focusing on juvenile alarm calls are lacking. We analyzed the acoustic structure of alarm calls emitted by six permanently marked European ground squirrels living in a semi-natural enclosure when they were juveniles and after 1 year as adults.

Primates have been predated on by snakes throughout their evolution and as a result, antipredator responses accompanied by signs of fear are often witnessed in the wild. In captivity, however, the fear of snakes is less clear, as experiments with naïve nonhuman primates have given inconsistent results. In this study, we present evidence that naïve mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus) and putatively naïve pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) do exhibit fear of snakes, even though the apparent reactions are mild.
