Objective: To define the optimal dosage regimen of teicoplanin that ensures early therapeutically relevant trough concentrations (C(min)) [>10 mg/L at 24 hours and possibly close to 20 mg/L at 48 hours] in patients with acute leukaemia who develop febrile neutropenia after chemotherapy.

Design: Prospective observational pharmacokinetic study.

Participants: Adult patients (n = 33) with normal renal function previously treated with antineoplastic chemotherapy because of acute lymphocytic or acute nonlymphocytic leukaemia, and subsequently developing febrile neutropenia treated with empirical antimicrobial therapy.

In vitro levofloxacin exhibits both potent or intermediate activity against most of the pathogens frequently responsible for acute bacterial meningitis and synergistic activity with some beta-lactams. Since levofloxacin was shown to penetrate the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) during meningeal inflammation both in animals and in humans, the disposition of levofloxacin in CSF was studied in 10 inpatients with external ventriculostomy because of communicating hydrocephalus related to subarachnoid occlusion due to cerebral accidents who were treated with 500 mg of levofloxacin intravenously twice a day because of extracerebral infections. Plasma and CSF concentration-time profiles and pharmacokinetics were assessed at steady state.

The metal ion adsorption properties of the microporous hybrid anilinepropylsilica xerogel were studied using divalent copper, zinc, and cadmium ions in aqueous solutions in concentrations ranging from 10(-4) up to 5x10(-3) moll(-1). At low concentrations the surface of the solid phase presents selectivity for Cu (II), even in competitive conditions. This preferential sorption ability for copper in relation to zinc and cadmium ions was interpreted by considering the xerogel morphology.

Data obtained as part of our routine drug monitoring of teicoplanin therapy (therapeutic drug monitoring, TDM) in adult critically ill patients being treated for suspected or documented Gram-positive multiresistant infections were assessed, retrospectively. Microscopy and histology techniques can be applied to morphological study of fungi and bacteria contaminating ancient human osteological remains. Undecalcified samples are cut with a diamond rotary blade microtome and an original technique was applied using adhesive tape to prevent damage to the bone surface during sectioning. Deltamethrin (S)-alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl) (1R,3R)-3-(2, 2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane-1-carboxylate is classified as a pyrethroid pesticide that is largely used as an acaricide and scabicide. For bovines, especially, the treatment is done with the aid of dipping baths of the pyrethroid solution. Analytical control of the concentration of deltamethrin in these baths must be done periodically in order to guarantee treatment efficacy.

This report describes the absence of gas flow despite the apparent proper mounting of a Canadian Liquid Air nitrous oxide quick-mount connector to its wall outlet. A similar but potentially more dangerous malfunction can occur with oxygen quick-mount connectors. The nature and cause of this defect are examined.

During a follow-up study of 120 cases of recurrent affective disorders treated prophylactically with lithium, the authors considered certain aspects of this treatment from a psychologic point of view. In particular, they examined the problems connected with prolonged administration of the drug, the relationship between drug therapy and psychotherapy, and the significance of pharmacologic prevention of the crisis by modifying the underlying individual, familial, and social conditions that the crisis manifests.

Intraventricular administration of taurine in the rat caused hypothermia, the extent of which was directly dependent upon the thermal gradient between the body and the environment. Pre-treatment of animals with p-chlorophenylalanine, which depleted most of the brain serotonin, strongly reduced the hypothermia induced by taurine. Pre-treatment with alpha-methyltyrosine induced hypothermia and sedation in animals.
