Bone scintigraphy with Tc-99m HEDP was performed in 30 patients on maintenance hemodialysis, and the results of quantitative analysis were compared with those of a normal group. To permit this comparison, elevated background activity due to the absence of renal radiotracer excretion was reduced by hemodialysis to levels found in the normals. Histologic proof of renal osteodystrophy had been obtained in all patients.

The accumulation in the tumor was determined by scintigraphy of the patient, grain counts over fields of tumor cells in autoradiographs of tumor-tissue samples, and gamma counts in specimens of the tumor. Good correlation was found between the results obtained with these three methods.

No single ideal method exists to assess the radiochemical composition of 99mTc-labeled antimony sulphur colloid, sulphur colloid, iron ascorbate, citrate, human serum albumin, EHDP, macroaggregates, and microspheres. It is advisable to include thin layer chromatography with both NaCl and methylethylethylketone for the determination of free pertechnetate in each day's program.

The interval between scintigraphy and autopsy was not more than a few weeks. The overall agreement rate was 49 in 59 (83%), with four out of 26 (15%) false positive and six out of 33 (18%) false negative reports.

The study contributes to the observation by others that the osteoid osteoma occurs as a scintigraphic 'hotspot'. It is concluded that the diagnostic delay of the osteoid osteoma can be shortened when bone scintigraphy is performed more often and at an earlier stage in patients with unexplained bone pain or with a clinical history that leads to the suspicion of the presence of an osteoid osteoma.

A large-field scintilation camera for nuclear medicine application has recently been developed by Old Delft. The system is based on a large-field image-intensifier tube preceded by a scintillator mosaic. A comparison is made with present state-of-the-art scintillation cameras in terms of modulation transfer function (MTF) and sensitivity.

Gallbladder concentration of 131I-iodocholesterol was observed in a patient studied for localization of adrenal activity. Misinterpretation of gallbladder activity as right adrenal function is possible if a lateral view is not obtained. The exposure of gallbladder mucosa may occasionally be far higher than the remainder of the biliary tract.

Scintigraphic and roentgenological studies in 9 patients, treated for Paget's disease, were evaluated before and during treatment and related to the values of serum alkaline phosphatase. On the initial studies--before treatment--25 lesions were found on both scintigram and roentgenogram. One lesion--proven by biopsy--was only seen on the scintigram.

In case of diffuse liver disease the accuracy of both methods is about the same except for fatty liver which is poorly diagnosed by scintigraphy.
