Cancers utilize a simple glycan, Sialic Acid, to engage in metastatic processes via the Sialic acid (Sia) -Selectin pathway. Selectins recognize and bind to sialylated substrates, resulting in adhesion, migration, and extravasation, however, how deviations from the canonical form of Sia regulate binding to Selectin receptors (E, L, and P) on hemopoietic cells resulting in these metastatic processes, remained a gap in knowledge. De-O-acetylated Sias has been recently shown to be an integral substrate to the binding of sialic acid binding proteins.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccess to dental care has been an ongoing issue in the United States (US), impacting the individuals who directly experience the consequences of limited access to dental services. This study explores the relationship between residence in dental health professional shortage areas (DHPSA) and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) among dental patients. Subjects were recruited from the patient population of the University of Minnesota's prosthodontic clinic.

However, detecting changing cell types is challenging due to individual-to-individual and cohort-to-cohort variability and naive approaches based on current computational tools lead to false positive findings. To address this, we propose a computational tool, scDist, based on a mixed-effects model that provides a statistically rigorous and computationally efficient approach for detecting transcriptomic differences.

However, there is a lack of data evaluating the clinical impact of remote, referral-based pharmacy programs.
Methods: This multicenter, cohort, retrospective chart review study analyzed the impact of pharmacist interventions on blood glucose control in patients aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with T2DM with an HbA1c of 8.
Objectives: The 6-item Perceived Financial Vulnerability (PFV) scale assesses awareness and psychological vulnerability regarding finances. Prior findings using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) identified significant associations of PFV with wealth, demographics, and health status. This study examines the relationship between wealth, changes in wealth, and PFV.

The current study addresses this issue by examining symptom trajectories across the day and using trajectories to predict problematic use.

This study investigated the correlation between oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in a general adult population.
Methods: This cross-sectional study used a convenience sample of adult participants (N = 607) attending the 2022 Minnesota County and State fairs in USA, the 5-item Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-5) assessed OHRQoL, and the 10-item PROMIS v.
Objectives: Oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) is pivotal in patient care, reflecting oral health through dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs). This systematic review aims to outline the 4-dimensional (4-D) impact of OHRQoL within patient populations routinely treated by dental hygiene and/or dental therapy providers, as there is limited literature present for these oral health care professionals.
Methods: The study extracted and analyzed characteristics and multidimensional impact of OHRQoL, using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP) as the primary dental patient-reported outcome measure (dPROM).
The goal of this study was to analyze transcription of audio recordings to determine health topics that emerged from brief-motivational interviewing (MI) compared to traditional oral hygiene instructions (OHI). Fifty-eight periodontal maintenance patients were randomized to a brief-MI or traditional OHI group for a longitudinal 1-year clinical trial. Both groups received four patient education sessions per their assigned group.

Background And Objectives: Preceptors in family medicine residencies need feedback to improve. When we found no validated, behavior-based tool to assess the outpatient precepting of family medicine residents, we sought to fill this gap by developing and initially validating the Mayo Outpatient Precepting Evaluation Tool (MOPET).
Methods: To develop the MOPET, we applied the Stanford Faculty Development Program (SFDP) theoretical framework for education, more recent work on peer review of medical teaching, and expert review of items.
Objectives: Evidence-based interventions for dementia caregivers, such as the Savvy Caregiver Program (SC), seek to address skills and knowledge deficits, caregiver burden, depressive symptoms, and grief. Little research has examined mechanisms by which these interventions accomplish their goals. Caregiver preparedness may be a possible mechanism by which caregiver interventions may confer benefits.

Past research identified cognitive effects of cannabis use among adolescents and young adults that can persist for several weeks after intoxication, though little is known about how these effects generalize to older adults. Participants ( = 1348) were drawn from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and were categorized as current occasional users (up to once/week in the past year, = 36), current frequent users (once per week or more in the past year, = 92), past users ( = 334), and non-users ( = 886).

Methods: Seventy participants were randomized to receive SRP (n = 35) or SRP+MM (n = 35). Saliva and clinical outcomes were collected for both groups at baseline before SRP, 1-month reevaluation, and at 3- and 6-month periodontal recall.
The prevalence of eating pathology among college students has increased significantly in recent years. This coincides with increases in the use of cannabis, both nationally, but also among college students. Problematic cannabis use has been linked to eating pathology in prior research.

Patients from a dental school in Minnesota were recruited to participate in a randomized, split-mouth, cross sectional proof-of-concept study comparing time, difficulty and pressure used with hand instrumentation alone compared to the use of a calculus disruption solution and hand instrumentation. Quadrants were randomized to either treatment or control group.

In dental hygiene and dental therapy, there is little usage of dPROs and dental patient-reported outcome measures (dPROMs) to assess the four-dimensions of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). In order to assess the current evidence for dental hygiene and dental therapy interventions, the determination of distinct patient populations is essential.

Plasticity in hatching time allows embryos to maximize fitness by balancing the benefits and costs of remaining bound within the chorion against the benefits and costs of emerging as a free-swimming larva. Here, in the first experiment, we exposed zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos to either chemical cues from crushed embryos (simulating egg predation) or to blank water control. Embryos exposed to alarm cues hatched sooner, and had shorter body lengths and underdeveloped fins, relative to larvae from the water treatment.

However, OHRQoL is not a homogenous construct and how to assess it is challenging because of the large number of currently available instruments. Investigating available instruments and what they have in common would be necessary for consolidation and standardization of these instruments into a smaller set of tools.

Methods: We used OHIP data from the Dimensions of OHRQoL (DOQ) project, which consolidated data from 35 individual studies. Among these studies, we analyzed OHIP data from 19 studies (4,847 surveyed individuals, of which 3,481 were completed under supervision and 1,366 were completed unsupervised) that contained some missing information.
Objectives: Previous research has found that many incarcerated individuals have mental health conditions and that incarcerated women may be at elevated risk. These individuals have been shown to experience mental health concerns shortly after their release, but little is known about their mental health later in life. This study compared depressive symptoms in older adults with and without a history of incarceration and examined the impact of gender on this relationship.

Introduction: The traditional techniques of maxillary sinus floor elevation via a direct or indirect approach are suitable for the majority of cases. However, in cases of unfavorable anatomy and/or a thick lateral bony wall, we propose here a new approach for sinus floor elevation.
Case Presentation: Forty-two-year-old female presents for sinus floor elevation after a failed attempt due to anatomical limitations and intraoperative complications.
