Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a hemolytic disease in which vaso-occlusion is an important pathophysiological mechanism. The treatment is based on hydroxyurea (HU), which decreases leukocyte counts and increases fetal hemoglobin synthesis. Different cell types are thought to contribute to vaso-occlusion.
