Background: Peritoneal carcinomatosis in gastric cancer is considered a fatal disease, without expectation of definitive cure. As systemic chemotherapy is not sufficient to contain the disease, a multimodal approach associating intraperitoneal chemotherapy with surgery may represent an alternative for these cases.

Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of intraperitoneal chemotherapy in stage IV gastric cancer patients with peritoneal metastasis.

Introduction: Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in both genders and often presents as a metastatic, unresectable, or recurrent disease in early follow-up. It is uncertain the benefit of oxaliplatin-based palliative chemotherapy (CT) in the first line of treatment in patients with compromised performance status (PS), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) 3 and 4. These patients are systematically excluded from clinical trials but may be treated in clinical practice.

Background: Preclinical studies have suggested that metformin has anti-tumour effects, likely due to blockage of mammalian target of rapamycin pathway through adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase and decreased insulin levels. A retrospective study showed that metformin added to everolimus to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus offered longer progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (NET).

Aims: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of metformin monotherapy in patients with advanced/metastatic well-differentiated NET (WD-NET) of gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) or pulmonary origin.

BACKGROUND Peritoneal metastasis is a common progression of abdominal-pelvic cancers, and it is associated with poorer oncological prognosis when compared to other metastasis sites. Its treatment has limited results, mainly because of poor bioavailability of chemotherapy within the abdominal cavity after systemic administration. Pressurized intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy (PIPAC) has been proposed as a novel method to deliver chemotherapy directly into the peritoneal surface; it combines the effectiveness and response of an intraperitoneal therapy with benefits of a minimally invasive approach.

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the feasibility and safety of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma in Brazil. SBRT is an evolving treatment in HCC patients not candidates to other local therapies. Its adoption in clinical practice has been heterogeneous, with lack of data on its generalizability in the Brazilian population.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality worldwide. The Brazilian Society of Hepatology (SBH) published in 2015 its first recommendations about the management of HCC. Since then, new data have emerged in the literature, prompting the governing board of SBH to sponsor a single-topic meeting in August 2018 in São Paulo.

Background: Postoperative chemotherapy (CMT) or chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is commonly recommended for gastric cancer (GC) patients in order to improve survival. However, some factors that prevent patients from return to intended oncologic treatment (RIOT) may increase the risk of recurrence and decrease the survival benefits achieved with curative resection. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and factors associated with inability to RIOT and their impact on survival.

Purpose: Despite epidemiologic and molecular differences between esophageal and stomach cancers, most published studies have included patients with either disease in a metastatic scenario. We evaluated the safety and effectiveness of chemotherapy in patients with metastatic esophageal cancer in the community setting.

Patients And Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with synchronous metastatic esophageal cancer treated at a public hospital between 2008 and 2016.

The purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that doxorubicin (DX) and cyclophosphamide (CY) adjuvant chemotherapy (CHT) acutely impairs neurovascular and hemodynamic responses in women with breast cancer. Sixteen women (age: 47.0 ± 2.

Background: Venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) are common and potentially fatal complications in cancer patients, and they are responsible for the second most common cause of death. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) is the gold-standard treatment, but the costs involved limit its use, especially in developing countries. Recently, the oral anticoagulant rivaroxaban, which directly inhibits factor Xa, was approved for VTE treatment.

Unlabelled: This was a phase II study of capecitabine in substitution of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in the chemoradiotherapy regimen for patients with localized squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal.

Background: Combined chemoradiation with infusional 5-FU and mitomycin is the standard treatment for localized squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the anal canal. Capecitabine is an oral fluoropirimidine that has been shown to be equally effective to 5-FU in many solid tumors.

Acquired hemophilia A (AHA) is a rare disorder that results from the presence of autoantibodies against the clotting factor VIII (FVIII) causing hemorrhagic disorders. This entity is mostly associated with autoimmune diseases, pregnancy, the postpartum period, drugs and malignancy. Among the solid cancers, prostate neoplasm is the most common cause of AHA.

Background: Cervical cancer (CC) is the second most common cancer in Brazilian women, and approximately 10% of cases occur in elderly patients (pts). In this age group, disease is usually diagnosed in more advanced stages and oncological therapies are usually less intensive, due to comorbidities and impaired performance status.

Methods: Retrospective analysis of pts ≥65 years old with CC admitted at a Brazilian University Cancer Center from August 2008 to February 2012.

Phase I trials are an important step in the development of new drugs. Because of the advancing knowledge of cancer's molecular biology, these trials offer an important platform for the development of new agents and also for patient treatment. Therefore, comprehension of their peculiar terminology and methodology are increasingly important.

Müllerian adenosarcoma is a rare, mixed tumor that can occur throughout the female genital tract, but is most commonly found in the uterus. Ovarian adenosarcoma is rarer and has a poorer prognosis than uterine adenosarcoma. Data on the clinicopathological features of ovarian adenosarcoma are limited, and, due to its rarity, the management is controversial.

Purpose: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a paraneoplastic bone mineral disturbance related to fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) overproduction by the tumor, usually from mesenchymal origin. Such condition leads to high phosphate renal wasting and, consequently, to cumbersome symptoms as weakness, bone pain, and fractures.

Method: Case report.

Purpose: Sorafenib is a multikinase inhibitor with antiangiogenic/antiproliferative activity. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase IIB trial assessed sorafenib with capecitabine for locally advanced or metastatic human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) -negative breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: Patients were randomly assigned to first- or second-line capecitabine 1,000 mg/m(2) orally twice a day for days 1 to 14 of every 21-day cycle with sorafenib 400 mg orally twice a day or placebo.

Objective: Cancer patients frequently require admission to intensive care unit. However, there are a few data regarding predictive factors for mortality in this group of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether arterial lactate or standard base deficit on admission and after 24 hours can predict mortality for patients with cancer.
