Purpose: New-onset diabetes after transplantation (NODAT) is a frequent metabolic complication associated with podocyte damage and renal allograft dysfunction. Thus, Wilm's tumor-1 (WT-1) protein, as a podocyte marker, holds promise as an option to evaluate renal allograft dysfunction in NODAT. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate urinary WT-1 levels in NODAT patients during the first year after kidney transplantation (KTx).

Objective This study aimed to investigate the impact of different types of intravenous fluids - normal saline (NS), lactated Ringer's solution (LR), and PlasmaLyte (PL) - on the acid-base balance and electrolyte concentration following kidney transplant, a common procedure for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Methodology A randomized controlled trial design was employed, wherein the primary parameters analyzed were postoperative pH and serum potassium levels. Postoperative concentrations of serum bicarbonate, sodium, chloride, and creatinine, as well as graft functionality, were assessed as secondary outcomes.

Objective: To validate a set of indicators for monitoring the quality of surgical procedures in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS).

Methods: Validation study developed in 5 stages: 1) literature review; 2) prioritization of indicators; 3) content validation of indicators by RAND/UCLA consensus method; 4) pilot study for reliability analysis; and 5) development of instruction for tabulation of outcome indicators for monitoring via official information systems.

Results: From the literature review, 217 indicators of surgical quality were identified.

Introduction: Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels occur after kidney transplantation (KTx), and can be associated with increase the risk of graft loss. This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate the vitamin D status and association with biomarkers of the renal graft function after KTx. Methods: this longitudinal study included 42 patients evaluated at baseline, 3 and 6 months after KTx.

Objective: To compare the 2 surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) techniques, the conventional 2-segment osteotomy between maxillary central incisors and the 3-segment osteotomy between maxillary lateral incisors and canines bilaterally. Authors hypothesized that the 3-piece would provide better bone expansion.

Study Design: A pilot study was conducted; 19 patients were divided into 2 groups: conventional 2-segment osteotomy (10 patients) and 3-segment osteotomy (9 patients).

Objective: To evaluate the impact of orthognathic surgery on quality of life (QoL) and to compare single- and double-jaw surgeries in terms of ratio and patient perceptions of the postoperative period.

Study Design: A prospective, longitudinal observational study was conducted. The short form Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) and the Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) were applied preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively to evaluate oral health-related QoL (OHRQoL).

Objective: The present double-blind randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the efficacy of conservative treatment and articular lavage, either alone or combined, to reduce joint pain and improve mandibular opening.

Study Design: The sample consisted of patients presenting with limited mouth opening and joint pain. The diagnosis was made according to the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders guideline and confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an aggregation of risk factors associated with increased incidence of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and all-cause mortality. Information on MetS prevalence is scarce in the northeast region, Brazil. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of MetS according to different diagnostic criteria in a community sample of men during the November Blue Campaign living in the metropolitan area of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.

Introduction: Surgical site infection (SSI) following hydrocelectomy is relatively uncommon, but it is one of the main post-operative problems. We aimed to describe the prevalence of SSI following hydrocelectomy among adult patients, and to assess predisposing risk factors for infection.

Methodology: This retrospective cohort study was carried out at a university hospital and included hydrocelectomies performed between January 2007 and December 2014.

Introduction: A mandibular setback reduces space in the pharyngeal airway, and it has been suggested that it might induce sleep-disordered breathing.

Objectives: An evidence-based literature review was conducted to identify the effect of mandibular setback on the respiratory function during sleep.

Methods: The authors performed a systematic review of pertinent literature published up to 2014.

The intraoral vertical osteotomy is a versatile and simple technique usually applied to correct mandibular prognathism. Its greatest advantages include ease of performance and minimum neurosensory disturbances, whereas maxillomandibular fixation is pointed as its major disadvantage. Another important concern about this technique is condylar displacement, which may lead to temporomandibular dysfunction.

A 16-year-old girl presenting with ectodermal dysplasia has undergone double jaw orthognathic surgery to correct mandibular prognathism and maxillary anteroposterior deficiency. Ten months later the patient had a second surgery that included the placement of 11 implants along with bone grafting to the maxilla and mandible. Fourteen months after the second surgery, the definitive ceramic work was fabricated and screw retained.

Orthodontic intrusion of overerupted molars in adults is challenging for most clinicians. Efficient intrusion can be achieved by combining selective alveolar corticotomies with a modified full-coverage maxillary splint to reduce surgical risks, treatment time, and costs for both orthodontists and patients.
