Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a persistent autoimmune disorder that manifests across a spectrum ranging from mild to severe disease, often requiring hospitalization and critical care management. We present a severe case of systemic involvement at its onset. A young woman, with a background of arterial hypertension, presented to the emergency department exhibiting a total anterior circulation stroke and exuberant symmetric lower limb edema.

Phlegmasia cerulea dolens is a rare entity that causes critical limb ischaemia, which may lead to amputation of the limb and may be life-threatening. Here, we describe a case of a healthy man in his 50s with multiple trauma who was transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a central hospital for neuromonitoring following splenectomy for the stabilisation of a hypovolaemic shock. On admission to the ICU, the patient developed a swollen and white leg.

Fatal Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome in an adult due to serogroup Y .

Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (WFS), defined as severe adrenal insufficiency due to bilateral adrenal gland haemorrhagic necrosis, occurred in a 59-year-old woman. An underlying serogroup Y (NM) infection was diagnosed, with a rapid progression to purpura fulminans, disseminated intravascular coagulation and WFS. Intensive treatment including fluid resuscitation, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy, ventilatory support, platelet and factor replacement were administered.

SVR versus neural-fuzzy network controllers for the sagittal balance of a biped robot.

The real-time balance control of an eight-link biped robot using a zero moment point (ZMP) dynamic model is difficult due to the processing time of the corresponding equations. To overcome this limitation, two alternative intelligent computing control techniques were compared: one based on support vector regression (SVR) and another based on a first-order Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK)-type neural-fuzzy (NF) network. Both methods use the ZMP error and its variation as inputs and the output is the correction of the robot's torso necessary for its sagittal balance.
