Herein, we describe the design and development of a new cell-permeable aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active 3-ethoxysalicylaldimine-based symmetrical azine molecule HDBE. The synthesized compound underwent comprehensive investigation of different spectroscopic methods, like NMR, mass and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The fluorophore HDBE exhibited the bright orange colour AIE behaviour in THF-HO mixture.

Systems with multistability are characterized by exhibiting complex nonlinear waves between equilibria. Experimentally, near the smectic-A to chiral nematic transition in a liquid crystal mixture cell with planar anchoring, we observe finger fronts emerge in the smectic-A phase when applying an electric field, a reorientation transition. Finger fronts propagate in the direction orthogonal to the anchoring.

Background: Adequate folate levels are essential for successful pregnancy outcomes. We aimed to study the relationship between placental mRNA and protein levels of folate transporters to birth weight.

Methods: Placental folate transporters (FOLR1, RFC1 and HCP1/PCFT) mRNA and protein levels in basal (BP) and chorionic plate (CP) of small (SGA), appropriate (AGA) and large (LGA) for gestational age term infants (≥37 weeks gestation, n = 111) were determined by real-time PCR and Western blot respectively.

Background: Endometriosis, pro-inflammatory and invasive benign disease estrogen dependent, abnormally express in endometria the enzyme P450Arom, positively regulated by steroid factor-1 (SF-1). Our objective was to study the nuclear protein contents of upstream stimulating factor 2 (USF2a and USF2b), a positive regulator of SF-1, throughout the menstrual cycle in eutopic endometria from women with and without (control) endometriosis and the involvement of nuclear estrogen receptors (ER) and G-coupled protein estrogen receptor (GPER)-1.

Results: Upstream stimulating factor 2 protein contents were higher in mid (USF2b) and late (USF2a and USF2b) secretory phase in eutopic endometria from endometriosis than control (p < 0.

Valproic acid (VA) is a drug widely used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder, at recommended serum concentrations ranging form 50 to 100μg ml(-1). A novel option for therapeutic drug monitoring that has been emerging recently its testing using dried blood spots on paper (DBS), but there are no reports of its application to assaying VA. In this study, a methodology was developed for the determination of VA in 6mm diameter DBS, equivalent to around 12μl of blood, using gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry.

The interaction of structurally different carotenoids with a membrane molecular model was examined by X-ray diffraction. The selected compounds were beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein, violaxanthin, zeaxanthin, and additionally carotane, a fully saturated derivative of beta-carotene. They present similarities and differences in their rigidity, the presence of terminal ionone rings and hydroxy and epoxy groups bound to the rings.
