Objectives: Quantitative analysis of the implementation of the bedside paediatric early warning system (B-PEWS) in a resource-limited setting. Methods: We performed a retrospective review through the medical data records of patients after discharge from the paediatric ward of a philanthropic hospital in Brazil.

Background: Rotaviruses can cause life-threatening health disorders, such as severe dehydrating gastroenteritis and diarrhea in children. Vaccination is the main preventive strategy to reduce rotavirus diarrhea and the severity of episodes, but vaccines are not fully effective and new episodes may occur, even in vaccinated children. The WHO recommends oral rehydration therapy and zinc supplementation for rotavirus-induced diarrhea management.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the hypothesis that essential tremor (ET) may be related to hyperactivity in the posterior putamen, contrasting traditional views that focus on the olivocerebellar system.
  • A rat model of ET was used, with groups undergoing either surgery to remove sections of the posterior striatum or sham procedures, followed by administration of harmaline to induce tremors for assessment.
  • Results showed significant tremor reduction in the experimental group that had surgery, suggesting the posterior striatum's involvement in ET and supporting the proposed hypothesis.
