Regulatory T (Treg) cells may play an important role in the pathogenesis of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), but data on the role of Treg cells in the context of oral PCM are still scarce. The objectives of this study were to investigate the density of FoxP3(+) T regulatory cells in oral PCM and to correlate the results with the density of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis in the lesions. Cases of chronic oral PCM seen between 2000 and 2008 were included in this study.

One of the current challenges in drug encapsulation concerns the development of carrier systems for hydrophilic compounds. Potential carriers include nanocapsules prepared with amphiphilic polymers, which consist of a polymeric coating surrounding an aqueous nucleus, or dense matrices such as nanospheres of alginate/chitosan, where the drug may be dispersed in the matrix or adsorbed on the surface. The development of new formulations of nanocarriers, for example the poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(ɛ-caprolactone) (PEG-PCL) nanocapsules and alginate/chitosan (AG/CS) nanospheres described in this work, is needed in the case of ionized drugs such as articaine.

Article Synopsis
  • Bleeding complications in dengue can occur even if there is no plasma leakage present.
  • The study compared plasma levels of factors affecting blood vessel permeability in three types of dengue cases: those with bleeding but no plasma leakage, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and non-complicated dengue.
  • Findings showed that in patients without plasma leakage, levels of VEGF-A and its receptors did not link to bleeding incidents, supporting the idea that bleeding complications can happen independently of changes in blood vessel barriers.

The raft hypothesis proposes that microdomains enriched in sphingolipids, cholesterol, and specific proteins are transiently formed to accomplish important cellular tasks. Equivocally, detergent-resistant membranes were initially assumed to be identical to membrane rafts, because of similarities between their compositions. In fact, the impact of detergents in membrane organization is still controversial.

Introduction: Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy caused by decreased activity of ADAMTS13, resulting in reduced clearance of ultralarge von Willebrand factor (VWF) multimers. Treatment of TTP is therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) with replacement with fresh frozen plasma (FFP). Cryoprecipitate-poor plasma (CPP) is a plasma product with lower concentrations of large VWF multimers, and similar amounts of ADAMTS13.

Acquired ADAMTS13 inhibitor causing thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) may be precipitated by some infections, inflammatory diseases or neoplasia. We reported a case of refractory TTP precipitated by a newly diagnosed localized Castleman's disease (CD). TTP was initially treated with plasma exchange and immunosuppressive therapy with corticosteroids; however the treatment failed to promote sustained response.

Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) are a promising system for the delivery of lipophilic and hydrophilic drugs. They consist of a solid lipid core that is stabilized by a layer of surfactants. By the incorporation of cationic lipids in the formulation, positively charged SLNs can be generated, that are suitable carriers for nucleic acids (DNA, siRNA).

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) develops via a multicellular process on the endothelial surface. Although widely recognized, the relationship between inflammation and thrombosis, this relationship has been mostly explored in clinical studies by measuring circulating levels of inflammatory cytokines. However, the role of inflammatory cells, such as neutrophils, in the pathogenesis of VTE is not clear in humans.

The aim of this work was to study the interaction between the local anesthetic benzocaine and p-sulfonic acid calix[n]arenes using NMR and theoretical calculations and to assess the effects of complexation on cytotoxicity of benzocaine. The architectures of the complexes were proposed according to (1) H NMR data (Job plot, binding constants, and ROESY) indicating details on the insertion of benzocaine in the cavity of the calix[n]arenes. The proposed inclusion compounds were optimized using the PM3 semiempirical method, and the electronic plus nuclear repulsion energy contributions were performed at the DFT level using the PBE exchange/correlation functional and the 6-311G(d) basis set.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems (vacuum, 75% O2+25% CO2 and 100% CO2) on the stability of lamb loins stored at 1±1°C for 28 days. Microbiological (counts of aerobic and anaerobic psychrotrophic microorganisms, coliform at 45°C, coagulase-positive staphylococci and lactic acid bacteria and presence of Salmonella), physical and chemical (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS], objective color, pH, water loss from cooking [WLC] and shear force), sensory (acceptance testing using a 9-point hedonic scale) and gas composition analyses were performed. Lamb meat remained stable with respect to the majority of the evaluated physical and chemical indexes and within the standards established by Brazilian legislation for pathogenic microorganisms throughout the storage period in all three packaging systems.

Introduction: Dermal and transdermal drug delivery systems offer the possibility to control the release of the drug for an extended period of time. In particular, skin-delivery of local anesthetics (LA) is one of the most important strategies to increase the local drug concentration and to reduce systemic adverse reactions.

Areas Covered: During the development phase of new formulations for skin-delivery of LA one should consider a set of desirable features such providing suitable adhesion, easy application/removal and also to be biocompatible, biodegradable and non-toxic.
