The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of resveratrol in preventing nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and expression of liver inflammatory markers in mice treated with a high-fat diet.

This study evaluated the effects of chemical agents on the physical properties and structure of primary pulp chamber dentin using surface roughness, microhardness tests, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Twenty-five primary teeth were sectioned exposing the pulp chamber and were divided into five groups (n = 5): NT, no treatment; SH1, 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl); SH1U, 1% NaOCl + Endo-PTC®; SH1E, 1% NaOCl + 17% EDTA; and E, 17% EDTA. After dentin treatment, the specimens were submitted to roughness, microhardness testing, and SEM analysis.

Continuous increase of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and non-HIV related cancers as causes of death in HIV-infected individuals in Brazil: an analysis of nationwide data.

Introduction: After antiretroviral therapy (ART) became available, there was a decline in the number of deaths in persons infected with HIV. Thereafter, there was a decrease in the proportion of deaths attributed to opportunistic infections and an increase in the proportion of deaths attributed to chronic comorbidities. Herein we extend previous observations from a nationwide survey on temporal trends in causes of death in HIV-infected patients in Brazil.

We report here that the surface topography of colloidal mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) plays a key role on their bionano-interactions by driving the adsorption of biomolecules on the nanoparticle through a matching mechanism between the surface cavities characteristics and the biomolecules stereochemistry. This study sought to establish the association between tooth loss due to dental caries and variables related to access to information on oral health in adults aged 35-44 years (n = 780) who participated in a large epidemiological study. The dependent variable was total tooth loss due to caries. The independent variables were grouped into blocks: demographic and socio-economic characteristics, use of dental service, access to oral health information (about how to prevent oral problems; oral hygiene; and diet), and behaviors.

The purpose of this study was to assess the LEPR gene Gln223Arg polymorphism (rs1137101) in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and in potentially malignant oral lesions (PMOL) in comparison to normal oral mucosa in a Brazilian population. Smokers (n = 89) were selected from a representative sample of 471 individuals from the general population of Montes Claros, Brazil. Participants were age and gender matched to patients with OSCC (n = 25) and oral epithelial dysplasia (n = 25).

Differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells seeded on mineralized electrospun co-axial poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gelatin nanofibers.

Mineralized poly(ε-caprolactone)/gelatin core-shell nanofibers were prepared via co-axial electrospinning and subsequent incubation in biomimetic simulated body fluid containing ten times the calcium and phosphate ion concentrations found in human blood plasma. The deposition of calcium phosphate on the nanofiber surfaces was investigated through scanning electronic microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Energy dispersive spectroscopy results indicated that calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite had grown on the fibers.

Meningeal Rosai-Dorfman disease mimicking meningioma.

Rosai-Dorfman disease of the central nervous system is extremely rare and difficult to diagnose also for pathologists. We describe three unusual cases of meningeal Rosai-Dorfman disease and illustrate the difficulties of preoperative and pathological diagnosis. We retrospectively analyzed three patients who underwent surgery for a suspected meningioma for whom the final diagnosis was Rosai-Dorfman disease of the central nervous system.

[Necrotizing myopathies: From genetic to acquired forms].

Necrotizing myopathies (NM) are defined by histological features. Muscle biopsy demonstrates marked muscle necrosis with regeneration, with little or an absence of inflammatory infiltrate. Histological pattern of NM is unspecific and can be encountered in diverse conditions as acquired myopathies and muscular dystrophies.

Metabolic syndrome in HIV-infected individuals: underlying mechanisms and epidemiological aspects.

The success of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has determined a dramatic decline in AIDS- and immunodeficiency-related causes of death in the HIV-infected population. As life-expectancy increases, such individuals have become gradually exposed not only to the effects of aging itself, but also to the influence of environmental risk factors, which are known to act in the general population. These features can lead to obesity, diabetes mellitus and ultimately cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
