Cancer patients present a higher risk of experiencing anxiety disorders (AD). However, it is not clear if AD might be associated with cancer development. Thus, our study aimed to evaluate if AD might be related to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) development.

Microbial lipase: a new approach for a heterogeneous biocatalyst.

Lipases are enzymes employed in several industrial process and their applicability can be increased if these biocatalysts are in the immobilize form. The objective of this work was to study the immobilization of lipase produced by submerged cultivation of sp. by hydrophobic interaction, evaluating its stability and reuse capacity.

Canine mammary cancer diagnosis from quantitative properties of nonlinear optical images.

We present nonlinear microscopy imaging results and analysis from canine mammary cancer biopsies. Second harmonic generation imaging allows information of the collagen structure in the extracellular matrix that together with the fluorescence of the cell regions of the biopsies form a base for comprehensive image analysis. We demonstrate an automated image analysis method to classify the histological type of canine mammary cancer using a range of parameters extracted from the images.

Human immunodeficiency virus infection and syphilis among homeless people in a large city of Central-Western Brazil: prevalence, risk factors, human immunodeficiency virus-1 genetic diversity, and drug resistance mutations.

Homeless people are at high risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and syphilis. We investigated the epidemiology of HIV-1 infection and syphilis among homeless individuals in a large city in Central-Western Brazil. In this cross-sectional study, we interviewed and tested 355 individuals from September 2014 to August 2015.

Does a high-fat diet affect the circadian clock, or is it the other way around? A systematic review.

This paper reviews studies that addressed the influence of diet on circadian rhythmicity in mice and, in turn, circadian clock chronodisruption and its role in the development of metabolic disorders. Studies from the past 14 years were selected via a systematic search conducted using the PubMed electronic database. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 291 studies were selected, of which 13 were chosen using the following inclusion criteria: use of a high-fat diet for mice, evaluation of clock gene expression, and the association between chronodisruption and lipid metabolism disorders.

Should the convergence between the social and biological vulnerabilities of black communities and the COVID-19 pandemic be considered?

The context of the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the structural inequalities and vulnerabilities experienced by black communities in the world, and in Brazil it is no different. The data generated in Brazil demonstrate that Brazilian inequality is alarming. Underreporting, non-prioritization of data that consider the variable race and color, and social groups in social vulnerability, help the unequal instrumentalization of epidemiological surveillance; many deaths from the black population are not being accounted for.

Comparative study of dietary fat: lard and sugar as a better obesity and metabolic syndrome mice model.

Methods: Swiss male mice were fed for 12 weeks with five different diets: Standard Diet (ST), American Institute of Nutrition 93 for growth (AIN93G) high-butter/high-sugar (HBHS), high-lard/high-sugar (HLHS), and high-oil/high-sugar diet (soybean oil) (HOHS).

The use of gene panels introduces a new dilemma in the genetics field due to the high frequency of variants of uncertain significance (VUS). The objective of this study was to provide evidence that may help in the classification of these germline variants in terms of their clinical impact and association with the disease in question. Effect of intraocular pressure lowering on the capillary density of optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer in patients with glaucoma.

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of IOP lowering on the capillary density of optic nerve head and retinal nerve fiber layer in patients with primary open angle glaucoma.

Methods: Twenty eyes of 14 glaucomatous patients and 15 eyes of nine normal patients were enrolled. The most appropriate hypotonic treatment was applied to every patient.

Efficacy and Patient's Acceptance of Alternative Methods for Caries Removal-a Systematic Review.

Dental caries is a disease of dental hard tissues, considered the most common non-communicable disease worldwide. Conventional treatments for caries removal are often associated with pain and fear, so different therapeutic approaches have been developed towards more conservative and pleasant treatments. This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy and patient's acceptance of alternative methods for caries removal compared to conventional methods.

Ocular manifestations in phakomatosis pigmentovascularis: Current concepts on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management.

Phakomatosis pigmentovascularis is a rare congenital multisystemic disease with variable manifestations where a vascular malformation of the skin is associated with a pigmentary nevus. Ocular involvement includes glaucoma, choroidal hemangioma, and pigmentary alterations that predispose to uveal melanoma. Giant hypothalamic hamartomas (GHH) are rare neonatal intracerebral congenital malformations responsible for gelastic epilepsy and/or endocrine disturbances. Sacrococcygeal teratomas (SCT) are fetal neoplasms associated with perinatal morbidity and mortality, especially hemorrhagic complications in giant examples (GSCT). Here, we describe an immature ruptured GSCT complicated by hemorrhagic shock at 32-week gestation boy requiring an emergency delivery, followed immediately by urgent surgical removal.

Canine visceral leishmaniasis in area with recent Leishmania transmission: prevalence, diagnosis, and molecular identification of the infecting species.

Introduction: Canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) is an endemic disease in Brazil, and integrated control actions have been adopted by the Brazilian Ministry of Health to control its spread. However, the transmission profile is unknown in areas with recent CVL cases, including Itaúna, located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, where the present study was carried out.

Methods: A total of 2,302 dogs from 12 neighborhoods were serologically tested for canine VL using the current diagnostic protocol adopted by the Brazilian Ministry of Health.

Aims: To suggest microbial inoculation as a tool to shorten organic residues stabilization and increase rock phosphate (RP) solubilization through vermicomposting, thus increasing nutrient content in plants and making it more appealing to farmers. Two Trichoderma strains were inoculated alone or combined in a RP apatite-enriched vermicompost. Stability and plant-available phosphorus levels were monitored for 120 days.
