Background: Cachibol (also known as Newcomb ball) is a team ball game with characteristics similar to volleyball. Cachibol is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among middle-age women, and is now the fastest growing female sport in our country. Despite its growing popularity, there is a lack of information about the epidemiology of injuries incurred from this activity.

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for treating delayed union scaphoid fractures: case series.

Background: The standard treatment to enhance fracture healing of scaphoid nonunions is surgery. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is gaining in popularity as an alternative treatment to improve fracture healing; however, little is known about success rates of this treatment in scaphoid-delayed unions. The purpose of our study is to define the success rate of LIPUS treatment for delayed union of scaphoid fractures and further analyze whether initial management or fracture type influences success rate.

Skin closure after arthroscopy utilizing a pull-out bow-tie subcuticular suture.

Background: suturing techniques employed to close subcuticular surgical incisions are varied.

Purpose: we present the "bow-tie" stitch, which is removed by pulling one side of the stitch with no need for sharp object stitch cutting. The stitch results in good approximation and scarring while enabling proper oozing.

Treating acute Essex-Lopresti injury with the TightRope device: a case study.

Essex-Lopresti injury consists of a fracture or dislocation of the radial head, rupture of the interosseous membrane (IOM), which is the main pathology, and a dislocated distal radio-ulnar joint. There are several reports in the literature, including cadaveric studies, which suggest an operative solution for this complicated injury. The torn IOM is not treated during the traditional operative repair.

Functional results after patellar fractures in elderly patients.

Elderly patients tend to fracture the patella because of a simple fall. In this group of patients restoration of primary functional level is crucial. Sixty-eight patients more than 65 years of age with patellar fractures, who were treated in our institution between January 1990 and December 1999 were evaluated.

Digit amputation is a physical and psychological trauma that can influence the daily living of a person. The rehabilitation of patients with digit amputation is a complex process and should take into consideration all influencing factors, such as the functional, emotional, social, and professional profile of the patient. This study was conducted to evaluate the functional level of patients with amputated fingers and to understand the factors that influence their rehabilitation.

Iatrogenic forearm compartment syndrome in a cardiac intensive care unit induced by brachial artery puncture and acute anticoagulation.

A previously healthy patient developed late compartment syndrome in the cardiac intensive care unit after a brachial artery puncture due to acute heparinization after successful percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) and stent implantation. The cardiologists recognized the problem and immediately consulted an orthopedic surgeon, who promptly performed surgery. The latter consisted of decompression and fasciotomy.
