Unlabelled: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a cancer that is etiologically associated with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), is endemic in Southern China and Southeast Asia. The scarcity of representative NPC cell lines owing to the frequent loss of EBV episomes following prolonged propagation and compromised authenticity of previous models underscores the critical need for new EBV-positive NPC models. Herein, we describe the establishment of a new EBV-positive NPC cell line, designated NPC268 from a primary non-keratinizing, differentiated NPC tissue.

Non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) is a common urological malignancy, and bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) therapy is the gold standard treatment in intermediate and high-risk groups. However, BCG failure occurs in a significant proportion of patients, emphasizing the need for effective alternative treatment modalities to address this burden. These treatments include immunotherapy, enhanced drug delivery, targeted therapy, device-assisted chemotherapy, vaccine therapy, and gene therapy, which show varying degrees of safety and efficacy.

BACKGROUND Electrocardiography (ECG) may be performed as part of preparticipation sports screening. Recommendations on screening of athletes to identify individuals with previously unrecognized cardiac disease are robust; however, data guiding the preparticipation screening of unselected populations are scarce. T wave inversion (TWI) on ECG may suggest an undiagnosed cardiomyopathy.

Background: Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a proarrhythmic condition that may require restriction from strenuous activities and is characterized by ECG signs, including delta waves. We observed cases of intermittent WPW patterns presenting as QRS alternans ('WPW alternans') in a large pre-participation ECG screening cohort of young men reporting for military conscription.

Objectives: We aimed to determine the WPW alternans pattern, case characteristics, and the prevalence of other relevant differential diagnoses presenting as QRS alternans in a pre-participation setting.

Recent evidence suggests the need to proceed with a surveillance colonoscopy in patients above the age of 40 years who undergo appendicectomy for acute appendicitis, given the higher risk of an underlying colonic tumor. After anecdotally observing a substantial variability in terms of adaptation of these recommendations by the on-call surgical teams, we performed a clinical audit regarding our relevant endoscopic follow-up compliance rates to identify areas for improvement of our practise. Materials We performed a retrospective review of the electronic records of all patients above 40 years who had appendicectomy for acute appendicitis within a 3-year period in our institution, assessing as primary outcome the actual performance of a follow-up colonoscopy and the detected endoscopic findings.

Primary peritoneal tumors are rarely encountered and their management is usually challenging for the clinicians. Especially when the patients with advanced peritoneal malignancy present as surgical emergencies, usually with symptoms of obstruction, perforation or gross space-occupying lesions, the on-call surgical team has to weigh the pros and cons of urgent versus delayed treatment and plans a safe and simultaneously oncologically beneficial therapeutic approach. Herein, we present a case of a Caucasian man who was referred as suspected complicated appendicitis by his primary care physician, with the final diagnosis being benign multicystic mesothelioma.

Background: Obtaining pus swabs from perianal abscesses after incision and drainage for subsequent microbiological analysis is traditionally performed by general surgeons. Our aim is to assess the current practice in our institution, emphasizing on whether pus swabs were sent or not, as well as to identify any associations between the revealed microbiology and the occurrence of immediate post-operative complications and re-admission rates with fistula-in-ano up to 12 months post the emergency drainage. Finally, we aimed to identify if the any members of the surgical team reviewed at any stage post-operatively the results of the microbiological examination of the obtained pus swabs and if that resulted in changes of the patient management.

Background: Approximately one in 2000 babies are born with craniosynostosis, and primary open repair is typically performed before 1 year of age. Historically, the procedure has been associated with nearly 100 percent transfusion rates. To decrease the rates of transfusion, the authors' center has developed a novel multimodal blood conservation protocol.

Introduction: Lambdoid craniosynostosis is an extremely rare anomaly in which there is premature fusion of one or both lambdoid sutures. The mainstay of treatment is surgical intervention, for which various procedures have been described, but there is a paucity of data on long-term outcomes. This study examines the long-term outcomes in the surgical management of this challenging condition, showing that accurate diagnosis and careful planning can lead to safe and consistent results.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a highly metastatic cancer prevalent in Southern China and Southeast Asia. The current knowledge on the molecular pathogenesis of NPC is still inadequate to improve disease management. Using gene expression microarrays, we have identified the () gene to be upregulated in primary NPC tissues relative to nonmalignant tissues.

Peptide vaccines derived from tumour-associated antigens have been used as an immunotherapeutic approach to induce specific cytotoxic immune response against tumour. We previously identified that MAGED4B and FJX1 proteins are overexpressed in HNSCC patients; and further demonstrated that two HLA-A2-restricted 9-11 amino acid peptides derived from these proteins were able to induce anti-tumour immune responses in vitro independently using PBMCs isolated from these patients. In this study, we evaluated the immunogenicity and efficacy of a dual-antigenic peptide vaccine (PV1), comprised of MAGED4B and FJX1 peptides in HNSCC patients.

Brugada syndrome (BrS) is an inherited cardiac arrhythmia commonly associated with SCN5A mutations, yet its ionic mechanisms remain unclear due to a lack of cellular models. Here, we used human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs) from a BrS patient (BrS1) to evaluate the roles of Na currents (I) and transient outward K currents (I) in BrS induced action potential (AP) changes. To understand the role of these current changes in repolarization we employed dynamic clamp to "electronically express" I and restore normal resting membrane potentials and allow normal recovery of the inactivating currents, I, I and I.

We report a case of epicardial ablation in a combined Brugada and inferior early repolarization syndrome patient with recurrent defibrillator therapy for spontaneous ventricular fibrillation. Electroanatomic mapping and ablation were achieved with remote magnetic navigation. Highly fractionated electrograms were seen epicardially in the anterior right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) and at the anterior-inferior right ventricle.

Article Synopsis
  • Remote Controlled Magnetic Navigation (RMN) for atrial fibrillation ablation reduces fluoroscopy time significantly compared to traditional Manual (MAN) techniques, but results in a longer overall procedural duration.
  • In a study involving 214 RMN patients and 229 MAN patients, fluoroscopy times were shorter for RMN (53.5 min) while procedural times were longer (280.2 min), highlighting a trade-off between these two factors.
  • Despite differences in timing, both techniques showed similar rates of acute procedural success (98.6% for RMN vs. 95.6% for MAN) and complication rates (2.3% for RMN vs. 4.8% for MAN), suggesting RMN is

In this study, we first performed whole exome sequencing of DNA from 10 untreated and clinically annotated fresh frozen nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) biopsies and matched bloods to identify somatically mutated genes that may be amenable to targeted therapeutic strategies. We identified a total of 323 mutations which were either non-synonymous (n = 238) or synonymous (n = 85). Furthermore, our analysis revealed genes in key cancer pathways (DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, immune response, lipid signaling) were mutated, of which those in the lipid-signaling pathway were the most enriched.
